Pawtucket is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 75,604 at the 2020 census, making the city the fourth-largest in the state. The city is home to Slater Mill, a historic textile mill recognized for helping to found the Industrial Revolution in the U.S. Hasbro, one of the world's largest manufacturers of toys and games, is headquartered in Pawtucket. The name "PawTucket" comes from the Algonquian word for "river fall" The city was an early and important center of cotton textiles during the American Industrial Revolution. It was once home to over a half-dozen movie theaters, two dozen hotels, and an impressive collection of fine commercial and residential architecture. Today, goods produced in the city include lace, non-woven and elastic woven materials, jewelry, silverware, metals, and textiles. In the 2010 census, there were 71,141 people, 32,055 households, and 18,508 families residing in Paw tucket, the city was the fourth largest in Rhode Island. In 1886, the United States Census Bureau has the city has a total area of 9.0 square miles (23 km²), of which it is 8.7 square miles of land and 078 km² of it is water. In 1874, the land west of the Blackstone River was taken from North Providence and added to the town of Pawt bucket, but acted as two towns. Finally, West and East Pawtbuck were merged in 1874 and the city. was incorporated. On March 1, 1862, after a nearly 225-year border dispute between Rhode Island and Plymouth/Massachusetts, the area of PawTucket and East Providence was shifted into Rhode Island; the new border remains to this day.

Name

The name "Pawtucket" comes from the Algonquian word for "river fall" Pawtucket is a town in Massachusetts. The town has a population of more than 100,000. Later in the 20th Century, Pawtbuck began to lose some of its architectural heritage to the wrecking ball, including the Leroy Theatre. In 1874, the land west of the river was taken from North Providence and added to the town of Paw tucket, but acted as two different towns. Finally in 1886, West and East Pawt Bucket were merged and the city was incorporated. In 1862 the eastern portion was absorbed into Providence County, Rhode Island. On March 1, 1862, after a nearly 225-year border dispute between Rhode Island and Plymouth/Massachusetts, the area of PawTucket and East Providence was shifted into Rhode Island, and the new border remains to this day. The first Pawtuckers to be incorporated was in 1828 when Rehoboth gave up their land and became a new town in Massachusetts.

Geography

Pawtucket lies within three drainage basins. These include the Blackstone River, the Moshassuck River and the Ten Mile River. The city has a total area of 9.0 square miles (23 km²) of which, 8.7 square miles of it is land and 0.3 sq miles (0.78 km²), is water. Pawtucket is located on the Connecticut River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only city in the state not to be named after a U.S. president or state senator. It has a population of 2.3 million (2.89% of its total population) and a population growth rate of 0.7% since the 1950s. Its population was 2.4 million (1.9% of the total population of the state) in the 2010 Census. It was 3.1 million (3.1% of all the state's population) in 2010. It had a population increase of 0% from the 2000 Census to 2.7 million (4.2%) in the decade between 2010 and 2012. It also has a decrease of 1% in its population from the 1990s to the 2000s, when it had 2.2 million residents (3% of total population). The city's population grew by 0.8% from 2000 to 2010, and 1.2% from 2001 to 2010. Its growth rate has slowed to 0.6% in the last decade.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 71,141 people, 32,055 households, and 18,508 families residing in the city. Pawtucket was the fourth most populous of Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns. Like nearby cities Providence, Fall River, and New Bedford, it hosts a significant population from across the former Portuguese Empire (11.6%), including a significant Cape Verdean population. It is also one of the few areas of the U.S. with a significant Liberian population, mostly refugees from Charles Taylor's regime; Rhode Island has the highest per capita LiberianPopulation in the country. According to the 2000 census, 20.6% of Pawt bucket residents are French or French-Canadian. The median income for a household in theCity was $28,124. The per capita income for the city was $17,008. About 14.9% of families and 16.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.5% of those under age 18 and 15.2% ofThose age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.07. The racial makeup of the city is 50.4% Non-Hispanic white, 18.9%, 4.7% other, and 0.60% Native American, 0.10% Pacific Islander, mixed race 3.9%. The city has a high concentration of West Africans, with about 25% of residents are Latino.

Arts and culture

Pawtucket is home to McCoy Stadium, where the Pawtucket Red Sox played from 1970 to 2020. The longest professional baseball game in history, 33 innings, was played at McCoy Stadium in 1981. Several experimental/indie rock bands have recorded albums at Machines with Magnets, a recording studio and art gallery. The city produces an annual citywide Arts Festival in September. The PawSox franchise was relocated to Worcester, Massachusetts, to become the Worcester Red Sox beginning with the 2021 season. In 2017, music historians Al Gomes and Connie Watrous of Big Noise were successful in getting the street where the concert stage stood (the corner of 455 Narragansett Park Drive) officially renamed as "Beach Boys Way" The city has a history of professional baseball dating back to 1892, including the PawTucket Indians. In 1934, the Narraganett Park opened for Thoroughbred horse racing. Until its closure in 1978, the track hosted several important races that drew some of the top horses from around the United States including Hall of Fame members; Seabiscuit, War Admiral and Gun Bow. Bands that have performed or recorded here include Battles, Lightning Bolt, Brown Bird, and Fang Island. One hub for arts and culture in the city is Lorraine Mills, a repurposed mill building on the eastern side of the city, which houses institutions including Mixed Magic Theatre, Wage House (comedy club) and Crooked Current Brewery. In January, 1999, Herb Weiss, of the Planning Department was hired to oversee the City's newly created Arts District.

Parks and recreation

Slater Memorial Park has full recreational facilities including tennis courts and picnic areas. Water Color Gallery open to the public for viewing. Marconi Garden has a garden with a water color gallery. The park also has a tennis court and a picnic area. It is located in the center of the town's historic downtown area. There are also tennis courts, a watercolor gallery, and other recreational facilities in the park. There is also a museum with a garden and a garden for the public to enjoy. It has a full range of outdoor activities for children and adults to enjoy, including hiking, biking, swimming, and more. The "Saints" is a small school consisting of roughly 500 students with a student to teacher ratio of about 15:2. William E. Tolman now competes annually against its fellow public high school Charles E. Shea, rather than against St Raphael Academy, a private Catholic high school. The two schools took part in a Thanksgiving Day football game that was played in McCoy Stadium for over 70 years, though game is no longer played. The City is also home to Bishop Keough High School, a small all-girls catholic high school in the Fairlawn neighborhood in the city's Fairl lawn neighborhood. It also has a number of private schools, including Blackstone Academy Charter School and St. Mary's School for the Arts in the Quality Hill section of the city, as well as St. Patrick's Catholic High School in the West End section of PawtUCKER, which was founded in the 19th century. It is the only city in the United States to have a public school system that is part-public and part-charter. It has a population of 1.2 million. The school district has a budget of $1.2 billion.

Infrastructure

Pawtucket is served by several RIPTA local bus routes plus the R-Line. Some of the slowest posted speeds on I-95 are in the city due to the "S-curves" near downtown. Pawtucket/Central Falls station on the MBTA Commuter Rail Providence/Stoughton Line is planned to open in January 2023, replacing the former station that closed in 1981. The Downtown Circulator was a one-way loop through downtown; it is similar to British concepts of ring roads. A similar concept was also tried in Providence, but failed to gain traction. There are no longer signs for the circulator, though the road configuration remains. It was signed with a big "C" on overhead signs. It carried one direction of U.S. 1; sections also carried westbound RI 15 and northbound RI 114. The circulator used East Avenue, High Street, Summer Street, Goff Avenue, Dexter Street and Park Place West. The city's Downtown Ring Roads have suffered a similar fate, though they are still visible from the air. It is also home to the Rhode Island Museum of Art, which was built in the 1930s and is located in the heart of the city. The museum is located on the corner of East and Main Streets, and is open to the public on weekdays. It also has a museum on the East Side, which is open on the weekends and on the West Side on the weekend. The Rhode Island Maritime Museum, which opened in the 1970s, is also in the town.

Hasbro, a Fortune 1000 toy and game making company, is headquartered in Pawtucket. Fox Point Pickles, a pickling company, has its headquarters in the Rhode Island city. Many healthcare, retail and insurance companies are headquartered in the city. The city is also home to the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, which is based in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Red Sox play their home games in the Red Sox Stadium. The Red Sox won their first game of the season against the New England Patriots on Sunday, October 7. The game ended in a 1-0 victory for the Sox, who have won their last six games in a row. The Sox also won their third straight game against the Yankees, beating them 2-1 on Monday, October 8. The team's last victory came on October 7, 2013, when they beat the Yankees 3-1. The win was their first in their last five games against the Mets, a run that began on October 6, 2013 and ended on October 8, 2013. The Celtics are the only team in the NBA to have won back-to-back games since the start of the 2013 season. The last time they won back to back games was on October 9 and 10, 2012, against the Knicks and the Giants. The streak is the longest in the history of the NBA, beating the streak of three games in 2012-2013. The current streak is tied for the second-longest run of victories in the league behind the Yankees.
