Saugus is a town in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, in the Greater Boston area. The population was 28,619 at the 2020 census. In 1646, the Saugus Iron Works, then called Hammersmith, began operations. It was the first integrated iron works in North America as well as one of the most technologically advanced in the world. In 1805 the Newburyport Turnpike (now U.S. 1) was built. In the 1950s new businesses began moving to Route 1. Today the businesses along Route 1 generate millions in dollars for the town. The first town hall was built in 1837 with $2,000 of the United States revenue surplus distributed by President Andrew Jackson. It is currently an American Legion hall. The town was officially incorporated as a town on February 17, 1815, and at the time of its incorporation, it had a population of 784. The name Sagus comes from the Pawtucket word for "outlet," and used the term to refer to the region that includes the present-day cities and towns of Swampscott, Nahant, Lynn, Lynnfield, Reading, North Reading and Wakefield. The word Sagus means 'outlet' in English and means 'to flow' or 'flow' in Native American language. SaugUS is known as the site of the firstIntegrated Iron Works in N. America. The Iron Works produced over one ton of iron a day, but was not financially successful and closed around 1670.
History
Saugus was named Sagus from the Pawtucket word for "outlet" Saugus Iron Works was the first integrated iron works in North America. The first town hall was built in 1837 with $2,000 of the U.S. revenue surplus distributed by President Andrew Jackson. In 1875, the town built its second and current town hall on Central Street. During the American Civil War, 155 Saugonians enlisted in the Union Army, and eight others served as the Union Navy's Assistant Secretary of the Navy. The town was named after a Union Navy monitor, which was designed by Moszar Huntman and built in 1863. In the 1950s new businesses began moving to Route 1. Today the businesses along Route 1 generate millions in dollars for the town. The city's main industry is agriculture. It is home to the Newburyport Turnpike, a four-mile road that is now a public highway. SaugUS' first post office was established in 1832 in East Sauguus. It was followed by two more in 1858 and one in Cliftondale. Now only the Cliftsondale post office remains in SaugUs. There were three passenger trains running through the town from 1853 to 1958. There are three Saugul Branch Railroad stations in the town, two just outside the town's borders in Lynn and two in Revere (East andFranklin Park) The town has a large granite monument to the town of Henry E. Hone.

The Newburyport/Rockport Line of the MBTA Commuter Rail passes through the southeast corner of the town, but does not have a station in Sauguus. The nearest airport is Boston's Logan International Airport, which is also the site of the Boston Marathon bombings in 1988 and the World Series football game between the United States and Germany in 1994. The U.N. World Cup 2014 is scheduled to be held in the town of Saugauus, Massachusetts, on June 14 and 15. It will be the first time that the World Cup has been held in Massachusetts since 1988. It is the only time the World Championships have been held on the East Coast of North America. The event will take place in Boston, where it will be followed by the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2016 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The World Cup will also be held at Boston's Eiffel Tower, which was the first World Cup venue to host the Winter Games. The city will also host the 2014 Winter Olympics, which will be hosted by the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Since 1947 Saugus has had a Plan E form of government, which is a combination of representative town meeting and Town Manager.
