Beaumont is a coastal city in the U.S. state of Texas. It is the seat of government of Jefferson County, within the BeaumontPort Arthur metropolitan statistical area. With a population of 115,282 at the 2020 census, it is the largest incorporated municipality by population near the Louisiana border. Its metropolitan area was the 10th largest in Texas in 2019, and 132nd in the United States. The city is home to Lamar University, a national Carnegie doctoral research university with over 14,000 students, including undergraduates and postgraduates. In 1892, Joseph Eloi Broussard opened the first commercially successful rice mill in Texas, stimulating development of rice farming in the area. Rice became an important commodity crop in Texas and is now cultivated in 23 counties. In 1901, the Spindletop gusher demonstrated that a huge oil field lay underneath and adjacent to the city. The area rapidly developed as one of the country's major petrochemical refining areas. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumon forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. The Port of Beaumonte became a successful regional shipping center. Beaument was a small center for cattle raisers and farmers in its early years. With an active riverport by the 1880s, it became animportant lumber and rice-milling town. By the early 20th century, the city was served by the Southern Pacific; Kansas City, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad systems; and the Santa Fe and Missouri Railroad.
History
Beaumont is the primary city name, but also Bevil Oaks are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Beaumont. Beaumont was a small center for cattle raisers and farmers in its early years. With an active riverport by the 1880s, it became an important lumber and rice-milling town. Oil is, and has always been, a major export of the city, and a major contributor to the national GDP. Beaumont became a major center for defense shipbuilding during World War II. In June 1943, housing and racial tensions increased in the crowded city after workers at the shipyards were accused of raping a black woman. The white mobed for three days, destroying major neighborhoods and killing five persons. No one was prosecuted for the deaths of the five persons and destroying major black neighborhoods. The city's first public library, now known as the Tyrrell Historical Library, was founded in 1835. The company along with four others established around the same time helped stimulate the expansion of rice cultivation from 1500 acres in 1892 to 400,000 acres in 23 counties by his death in 1956. In the early 20th century, the city was served by the Southern Pacific; Kansas City Southern, Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe; and Missouri Pacific railroad systems. The oil gusher at Spindletop in 1901 became the first major oil field and one of the largest in American history. With the discovery of oil, the population more than tripled in two months from 9,000 in January 1901 to 30,00 in March 1901. The first public school was opened in 1838.
Geography
Beaumont lies on Texas' coastal plain, about 30 miles (48 km) inland from the Gulf of Mexico, 85 miles (137 km) east of Houston. The city is bordered on the east by the Neches River and to the north by Pine Island Bayou. Beaumont has 8 buildings over 100 feet (30 m) tall, the tallest being the Edison Plaza, which is 254 feet (77m) tall. The area around the city receives the most rainfall in the state: more than 48 inches (200 mm) annually. The region has historically been cited as one of the most polluted urban areas in the United States due to various energy industries and chemical plants in the area. As of July 2014, the Beaumon-Port Arthur region was not under any Environmental Protection Agency non-attainment restrictions. The Beaumons are the most humid city in Texas, with a humid subtropical climate (Köppen "Cfa"). The city of Port Arthur is within the Piney Woods region of eastern Texas and experiences a humid tropical climate (Cfa) The city has a humid continental climate (Köppens "Csb" or "Dfa"). The city experiences the most rain in the eastern part of the state every two years, with an average of more than two inches annually. It is the second-largest city in the U.S. behind Houston. It has a population of around 100,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the downtown area.
Demographics
The city of Beaumont and its metropolitan statistical area have experienced slight population decline and stagnation since 2015's census estimates. Per the 2020 United States census, its population slightly declined to 115,282 residents. The median income for a household in the city was $39,699, according to the American Community Survey during 2010. In 2019, an estimated 16.7% of the population lived at or below the poverty line. Christianity, since colonial times, has remained the dominant religion by identification in Beaumonte and its surrounding area.Beyond Christianity, the second largest religion has been Islam, with religious Jews comprising the third largest religiously-affiliated demographic. As the city has a substantial Islamic community, interfaith efforts have occurred, and the Islamic Society of the Tri-Cityplex completed a 9,000 square foot mosque in 2017. In 2020, its Hispanic or Latino American population of any race increased to 20,607 residents, or 17.88 per cent of the total population. The city's population increased to being predominantly Black or African American as its non-Hispanic white population slightly decline, reflecting nationwide demographic trends of diversification and self-identification. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.12. From an estimated 45,435 occupied housing units in 2019, 52.1% were owner-occupied and the median selected monthly costs for units with a mortgage were $1,366 and $412 without a mortgage. From 2014 to 2019, its Median income for households was $54,488; families had a median income of $61,069 and non-family households $29,415.
Economy
The Port of Beaumont is one of the largest seaports by tonnage in the United States. The 842nd Transportation Battalion and the 596th Transportation Group are both stationed at the port. Several large industrial facilities are located within the city's five-mile extraterritorial jurisdiction boundaries. The top employers in the city were: Jason's Deli, Conn's Appliances, Universal Coin & Bullion, Dresser Industries, Gulf Oil, Humble Oil, Magnolia Petroleum Company, The Texas Oil Company, and The Texas Coffee Company. In mid-2012 Conn's moved its corporate headquarters to The Woodlands. Originally Sweet Leaf Tea Company had its headquarters in Beaumonte. The headquarters moved to Austin in October 2003. The city is home to the U.S. Maritime Commission, where over eight hundred (800) vessels were built and repaired at the shipyard including barges, ships, and offshore drilling rigs including seventy-two (72) jack up offshore drilling rig. The first company in the US to begin packaging coffee in vacuum-packed foil bags was The Texas coffee Company. The company was founded in 1961 and has since gone out of business. It was the first company to sell coffee in foil bags in the country. It is also the largest retailer of precious metals and rare coins in the world. It has been in business for over 70 years and has over 2,000 employees. The shipyard has over eight thousand vessels in its inventory.
Culture
The Art Museum of Southeast Texas was dedicated in memory of real estate developer Hyman Asher Perlstein (1869-1947) The Clifton Steamboat Museum consists of a 24,000 square feet (2,200 m2), two-story museum. The Beaumont Art League is the oldest non-profit art gallery in the area, operating for 70 years. The museum features 19th and 20th century European and American Art, as well as Tribal Art from Africa and New Guinea. Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum includes several reconstructed buildings reminiscent of the original Gladys City. Several Van Cliburn & Van Allen symphony orchestras have performed in the city since 1953. The city is home to a botanical gardens, a golf course, a nature trail, and the Henry Homberg Municipal Golf Course. It is located near the entrance to the 500 acre Tyrrell Park, which includes a 10,000 sq ft conservatory and a large collection of bromeliad bromads. It also features the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum, which is dedicated to the life of thebeaumont native and accomplished athlete. The Texas Energy Museum of Beaumon opened on January 10, 1990, the anniversary of the Spind letop gusher. It's located in the Oaks Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and is recognized also as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
Sports
The Beaumont Exporters were a minor league baseball team that played from 1920 to 1949 and 1953-1955. The Texas Strikers, a professional arena soccer team PASL, started playing at Ford Arena in 2012. The sports teams of Lamar University compete in Division I NCAA athletics as the Lamar Cardinals. The university brought back football in 2010; as part of the return, Provost Umphrey Stadium was completely renovated. The team currently competes in the Southland Conference as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). The Cardinals Basketball team plays in the Montagne Center and Cardinals Baseball Team plays in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The basketball league planned to add the Beaumonte Panthers as a new team in 2022. The BeaumONT Drillers were an IPFL football team that playing in Beaumon from 2003 to 2007. TheTexas Wildcatters were an ECHL Hockey team based in Beausont from 2003-2008. The Lamar Cardinals Football team played its first game in 21 years in the fall of 2010. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals compete in 17 varsity sports. The school is a full member ofThe Lamar Cardinals football team plays its first games since 2010 in the Fall of 2010 at the Provost umphrey stadium. The University of Texas at Beausoleil is a Division I Division I football team. The football team competes as the Cardinals. It currently plays its home games at the Montagne Center.
Government
Beaumont is a councilmanager form of government. Elections are held annually, with the mayor and council members each serving two-year terms. All powers of the city are vested in the council, which enacts local legislation, adopts budgets, and determines policies. The city's various funds had $219.0 million in revenues, $202.8 million in expenditures, $900.1 million in total assets, $586.8million in total liabilities, and $ 202.2 million in cash and investments. The Texas Ninth Court of Appeals is located in the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont. Texas Department of Corrections operates three facilities of various custody types in unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, with a total capacity of about 7500 inmates. The Federal Bureau of Prisons is also in the city and operates the beaumont Federal Correctional Complex in an uninc incorporated area south of Beaumonte. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a training facility in the area. The Army Corps has a depot in the town of West Point, Texas, which is located on the Texas-Louisiana border. It is the only military base in Jefferson County that is not part of the state of Texas or the Texas National Guard. It has a base of operations in West Point and the Texas Army National Guard, which has a camp of about 2,000 soldiers. The National Guard is based in Fort Worth, Texas. The Fort Worth Army National Guardsmen are based in the Texas State Guard Base, which lies just south of the town.
Education
Beaumont has one state university, Lamar University. Lamar Institute of Technology serves as the region's technical college for two-year degrees and certificates. Beaumont is served by the beaumont Independent School District, though there are also several private schools in the city and metropolitan area. All Saints Episcopal School is a private school that serves PK38th grade. Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School is the city's lone Catholic high school. Residents who live in unincorporated Jefferson County are zoned either to Hamshire-Fannett Independent School district (south of Beaumonte) or Hardin-Jefferson Independent school District (west of Major Drive and Highway 90) The city is home to the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities, which offers a variety of programs in the arts and sciences. The city also has the Texas State University System, which is a part of the University of Texas at Austin. The university's main academic offerings are in business, nursing, teaching and engineering. The school's enrollment as of Fall, 2015 was above 14,966 students. It is also classified as a "Doctoral Research University Moderate Research Activity" by the Carnegie Foundation. It was established in 1923 as South Park Junior College, and is now a national university. It has over 100 degrees offered, with the main offerings being in business and nursing. It also offers a number of certificates and certificates in various fields, such as computer science, engineering, and business.
