Plainview

Plainview is a city in Hale County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,194. The city has a total area of 13.8 square miles (36 km²), all land. A Cargill beef processing plant, then the largest employer in the city, closed in 2013 due to lack of incoming animals. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice Region V office is located in Plainview. Plainview is home to the South Plains College of Media, a private, coeducational university, and the Museum of the Llano Estacado, home to a permanent exhibit featuring fossilized remains of a Columbian mammoth. The mascot is a English Bulldog nicknamed "Big Red". The city is located at 34°1128N 101°438W (34.191204, 101.718806) and is located on the Llono Estacados. The Köppen climate classification system, Plainview has a semiarid climate, BSk on climate maps. In 2009, the Texas Dept. of State Health Services ordered the recall of all products produced by a processing facility near Plainview owned by Peanut Corporation of America. Rodents, excrement, and feathers in the plant had been found in the facility's products. In 1908, the city was founded, when the school was founded. The school was more than a mile from the city limit, and is now the county seat of Hale County.

Plainview has a semiarid climate, BSk on climate maps. According to the Köppen climate classification system, PlainView has a Semiarid Climate. The city is located in the state of Baja California, in the north-central part of the state. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is one of the smallest cities in the county. The population of Plainview was 2,071 at the 2010 census. It has a climate of BSk, on the climate maps, with a BSk climate. It also has a hot desert climate, with an average monthly temperature of 4.7 degrees Celsius. The area has an average annual rainfall of 2,816 millimeters (91.7 inches) and an average yearly temperature of 5.7 °C (100.7°F). The city has an elevation of 34.1 m (101.438 W) and a mean annual temperature of 3.8 mm (99.2 °F) The city's population is about 1,200 people (1.7% of the total population of the U.S. Census Bureau).

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 20,187 people, 6,843 households, and 4,668 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 63.21% White, 5.87% African American, 1.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 26.59% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 49.83% of the population. The median income per household was $31,551, and per family was $35,215. About 15.0% of families and 19.1% of those aged 65 or over were below the poverty line. The average household size was 2.82, and the average family size was four. The city has a population of 22,336, and its population density is 1,621.0 inhabitants per square mile (625.9/km²) The city's median age is 31 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males. The per capita income for the city is $13,791, and for males it is $26,434. It has a median age of 31 years and a population density of 1.621 inhabitants per sq mi (630.4/ km²) It has an average population of 20,000, and a median population size of 614.8/sq mi (237.4-km²).

Economy

In 2009, the Texas Department of State Health Services ordered the recall of all products produced by a processing facility near Plainview. Rodents, excrement, and feathers in the plant had been found in the facility's products. A Cargill beef processing plant, then the largest employer in the city, closed in 2013 due to lack of incoming animals, a result of the 2010-2012 drought. The closure created challenges for the city as an estimated 2,300 employees and their families relocated. It was not related to closures of PCA plants due to Salmonella concerns. The city of Plainview is home to the Texas Institute of Technology, which offers a master's degree in business administration. The university is also home to Texas Tech University, which has a doctor of business administration degree. It is the home of the University of Texas at Austin, where an estimated 3,000 students are enrolled. The school is also the site of the Texas Tech Business School, where students can earn a doctorate in business and marketing. The University ofTexas at Austin offers a masters in business management, with an emphasis on the food and beverage industry. It also offers a bachelor's in business, with a focus on the health and safety of food and drink industry workers. It has a health and human services center, which is based in the town's downtown area. The town's mayor is the former mayor of the city of Austin, who is now the city's mayor-council president.

Government

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice Region V office is located in Plainview. The current Region V headquarters opened in 1996 in a former Bank of America building. The office is part of the state's larger Criminal Justice Division. It is located on the former site of the Texas Bank and Trust Company. The Region V offices are located in a building that was once a bank. The headquarters are currently located in an old bank building on the outskirts of Plainview, Texas. The region's headquarters are now located in the former Texas Bank & Trust Company building, which is now a home to the Texas Criminal Justice Department's Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.

Education

The city is served by the Plainview Independent School District, which enrolled 5,585 students as of 2018. The district attracts transfer students from surrounding school districts. Wayland Baptist University, a private, four-year, coeducational, Baptist university, is based in the city. The Museum of the Llano Estacado, which opened in 1976, is located on the university grounds. The museum is home to a permanent exhibit featuring artifacts from the Plain View Site, and fossilized remains of a Columbian mammoth known as the "Imperial Mammoth" South Plains College serves the residents of the city, an extension of South Plains University. The mascot for Plainview High School is a grey English Bulldog nicknamed "Big Red", while the mascot for the city's elementary schools is a red-haired, white-faced, blue-eyed boy. The city is located in the Texas Panhandle, which is the state's second-largest state, after Texas Panhandle and Texas Worth. The state's largest city is Dallas, which has a population of 2.2 million. The Texas  Panhandle State University System is based in Dallas, Texas, and has a campus that is more than a mile from the city limit. In 1908, when the school was founded, the campus was more than one mile from the city limit. The state's largest university, South Plains College, is also based in Plainview, Texas.
