Plainview is a city in Hale County, Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,194. The city has a total area of 13.8 square miles (36 km²), all land. A Cargill beef processing plant, then the largest employer in the city, closed in 2013 due to lack of incoming animals. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice Region V office is located in Plainview. Plainview is home to the South Plains College of Media, a private, coeducational university, and the Museum of the Llano Estacado, home to a permanent exhibit featuring fossilized remains of a Columbian mammoth. The mascot is a English Bulldog nicknamed "Big Red". The city is located at 34°1128N 101°438W (34.191204, 101.718806) and is located on the Llono Estacados. The school was more than a mile from the city limit, and is now the county seat of Hale County.

In 2009, the Texas Department of State Health Services ordered the recall of all products produced by a processing facility near Plainview. Rodents, excrement, and feathers in the plant had been found in the facility's products. A Cargill beef processing plant, then the largest employer in the city, closed in 2013 due to lack of incoming animals, a result of the 2010-2012 drought. The closure created challenges for the city as an estimated 2,300 employees and their families relocated. It was not related to closures of PCA plants due to Salmonella concerns. The city of Plainview is home to the Texas Institute of Technology, which offers a master's degree in business administration. The university is also home to Texas Tech University, which has a doctor of business administration degree. It is the home of the University of Texas at Austin, where an estimated 3,000 students are enrolled. The school is also the site of the Texas Tech Business School, where students can earn a doctorate in business and marketing. The University ofTexas at Austin offers a masters in business management, with an emphasis on the food and beverage industry. It also offers a bachelor's in business, with a focus on the health and safety of food and drink industry workers.
