La Marque

La Marque, also once known as Highlands and Buttermilk Junction, is an incorporated residential community on Interstate Highway 45, State Highway 3, and Farm Roads 519, 1765, and 2004. It is a part of the Houston- The Woodlands- Sugar Land metropolitan area. La Marque experienced considerable growth in the 1950s, during which the city provided a general administrative and trades and crafts workforce helping to support the petrochemical complex in adjoining Texas City. The town had a population of 17,000 and 130 businesses in 1977. In 1988, it had 15,697 residents and 158 businesses, and in 1991, some 14,258 residents and 272 businesses. In the 2000s, rising real estate costs in Galveston forced many families to move to other areas. This meant an influx of children into other school districts. In spite of this fact, the number of children enrolled in the La Marquese Independent School District has continued to fall. The city is located at 29°2200N 94°5826W (29.366684, 94.973922).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.3 square miles (37 km²), of which, 14.2 square miles of it are land and 0.04 square miles. of it (0.10 km²) is covered by water. In 2020, there were 18,030 people, 6,549 households, and 4,229 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 34% African American, 046% Native American, 6% Asian, 55% White, and 2.24% Hispanics or Latinos.

History

La Marque is the primary city name, but also Texas City are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of La Marque. La Marque is an incorporated residential community on Interstate Highway 45, State Highway 3, and Farm Roads 519, 1765, and 2004, some 12 miles northwest of Galveston. The community was originally known as Highlands, probably for its location near Highland Creek, and was renamed in the 1890s when residents learned of another mainland community of the same name. During the Civil War, the town was known as Buttermilk Junction after the soldiers' practice of purchasing buttermilk there. The town's population reached 500 in 1914 and 1,500 by 1952, when it had 90 businesses. In 1988, it had 15,697 residents and 158 businesses, and in 1991, some 14,258 residents and 272 businesses. La Marque served as a residential community for employees at nearby industrial facilities (e.g., chemical plants and refineries) in the La Marquese-Texas City area, as well as the Galvest on Island Medical Center. Geography

La Marque is located at 29°2200N 94°5826W (29.366684, 94.973922).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.3 square miles (37 km²) of which, 14.2 square miles of it are land and 0.04square miles (0.10km²) is covered by water. La Marque has a population of 2,816. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which is a major shipping route for the region. The town is located in the eastern part of the Baja Peninsula, on the border with Mexico. The Baja peninsula is home to some of the country's most productive oil and natural gas fields. The area is also known as the "Baja Peninsula" because of its proximity to Baja California. It is the most populous city in the state, followed by Bakersfield, Bakersville, and San Diego. The population of the city was 2,716 at the 2010 census. It has a latitude of 29.2°N and a longitude of 94.7°W. It was founded in the 18th century by French Huguenot settlers. The community has a history of being involved in the First World War and the Spanish-American War. It also has a long-standing Spanish-speaking community, which dates back to the 17th century. The current mayor of the town is a descendant of the first Spanish-language settlers.

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 18,030 people, 6,549 households, and 4,229 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 55.84% White, 34.69% African American, 0.46% Native American,0.47% Asian, 6.24% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. Of the 5,237 households, 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were not families. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.06. The median income for a household in theCity was $34,841, and for a family was $39,081. About 13.5% of families and 17.5%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.6% of those under age 18 and 9.8%. The per capita income for the city is $17,518. For every 100 females, there are 90.4 males. The city has a population of 13,682 people, and a population density of 962.0 people per square mile (371.5/km²). The city is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's West Coast, and is part of the West Coast Division of the Census.

Government and infrastructure

The U.S. Postal Service La Marque Post Office is located at 509 Laurel Street. The post office is open seven days a week, seven days per week. The postal service is run by the United States Postal Service. It is located in the town's central business district. The town's population is about 2,000. The city's economy is about 1,000 people. It has a population of 2,200. The U.N. World Cup is held in La Marquesa every four years. It's the largest city in the state. It also hosts the World Cup's opening and closing ceremonies in the summer. It was the site of the first World Cup games in 1998. The World Cup began in 1998, and ended in 2007. It will host the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016. The village's population has grown to 1,200 people in the last few years. Most of the city is served by the Texas City Independent School District (TCISD) Small portions of La Marque are served by the Dickinson Independent School district, Hitchcock Independent school district, and Santa Fe school district. The former La Marquese Independent SchoolDistrict was dissolved in July 2016. The district was given an accreditation status of "Not Accredited-Revoked" by the TEA in October 2015. The city owns its own public library, which is located at 1101 Bayou Road. The College of the Mainland is the only college in the city, serving students from all over the state of Texas. It is located on the main campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio). The city is home to the Texas Institute of Art and Design, which was founded in 1883. The Texas Museum of Fine Arts is located in the town's downtown area. The town is also home to a number of museums, including the Texas State Museum and the Texas National Museum of Natural History, which were established in 1881. La Marquez is also the home of the Texas Air Force Museum, which dates back to the first air force base in Texas in the 19th century. It was also the site of the U.S. Air Force Academy, which opened in the early 20th Century. It has since become a museum of art and science. The museum is now owned by Texas State University, which also has its own museum of natural history. The La Marquese Museum of Art is located nearby.

Transportation

Greyhound Bus Lines operates the Texas City La Marque Station at McKown Air Conditioning in nearby Texas City. The station is located at the former site of McKown's air conditioning plant. Greyhound operates a number of other stations in Texas City and the surrounding area.

Parks and recreation

The Galveston County Department of Parks and Senior Services operates the Wayne Johnson III Community Center at Carbide Park. The center is open to the public and is free to use.
