Cuero (KWAIR-oh) is a city in and the county seat of DeWitt County, Texas, United States. The city was named for the Spanish word "hide", referring to the leather made from animal hides. Cuero had its start in the mid-19th century as a stopping point on the Chisholm Trail cattle route to Kansas. Its population grew considerably in the 1870s and 1880s, as residents from the coastal town of Indianola, Texas settled here after major hurricanes in this period destroyed sizeable portions of that city. Today, agriculture is still the primary industry in the region, and Cuero is considered to be one of the top cattle producers and shippers in Texas. U.S. Routes 87, 77 Alternate, and 183 pass through the city. According to the Köppen climate classification, Cuero has a humid subtropical climate, Cfa on climate maps.Cuero has an annual average precipitation of 38.0 in (965.2 mm), all rain, as snow is negligible in the area. It has a total area of 4.9 square miles (12.8 km²), of which 0.02 sq miles (0.05 km²) is covered by water. It is located east of the center of Dewitt County near the mouth of Sandies Creek, where it empties into the Guadalupe River. The population of Cuero was 8,128 at the 2020 census.

History

The city of Cuero was founded in 1873. It was named for the Spanish word "hide", referring to the leather made from animal hides. The city had several Old West gunfights related to clan feuding following the Civil War. Today, Cuero is considered to be one of the top cattle shippers in the United States. It is located on the Chisholm Trail, which runs from New Mexico to Kansas. The route was built in the early 19th century to carry cattle along the Texas-Oklahoma border. Cuero's population grew considerably in the 1870s and 1880s, as residents from the coastal town of Indianola, Texas, settled here after major hurricanes in this period destroyed sizeable portions of that city. Today the city is still a popular destination for cattle ranchers, especially in the late 19th and early 20th century. It has a population of more than 100,000, and is home to a large number of cattle ranches and sheep farms. The town is also known for its turkey ranching, which began in the mid-19th century, and continues to be a major part of the area's economy. It also has its own airport, which was established in 1872, which is still in use today as a hub for cattle transportation. It's also home to the Texas State Museum, which dates back to the early 1900s, when it was established to show the history of the state and its cattle industry. The museum is located in the city's historic center, and has a large collection of old photographs.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The town has a population of 2,856. It is located on the Texas-New Mexico border and is located in the Rio Grande Valley, which is the state's second-largest city. Cuero is home to the University of Texas at San Antonio, which has one of the largest campuses in the United States. It also has the Texas Medical Center, the largest hospital in the state, and the Texas Diagnostic and Trauma Center, which provides care for more than 1,000 patients a year. It was the site of the Texas Rangers football team, which won the Super Bowl in 2004. The Texas Rangers also won the World Series in 2008 and 2010. As of the 2020 United States census, there were 8,128 people, 2,323 households, and 1,472 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 67.25% White, 16.71% African American, 0.61% Native American,0.52% Asian, 12.84% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 34.73% of the population. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13. The median income for a household in theCity was $24,931, and for a family was $29,500. About 21.5% of families and 26.8% of people were below the poverty line, including 34.6% of those under age 18 and 20.1% ofThose age 65 or over. For every 100 women aged 18 and over, there are 80.6 men. In the city, the age distribution was 27.1 per cent under 18, 8.5 per cent from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.7 per cent who were 65 or older. The city has a population of 6,571 people, and as of the census of 2000, 6,573 people, 1,695 families resided in the City. The population density was 1,331.1 people per square mile (513.6/km²).

Arts and culture

Christmas in Cuero began in 2000 with the lighting of the gazebo. It has grown to over 100 displays of Victorian and Western scenes, 12-car trains, gingerbread houses, and other scenes. Two of the scenes were vandalized by two teens in November 2009. The teens had their bonds set at $150,000, in part because of the effect the crime had on the community. In Cuero, the "turkey trot" involves racing actual turkeys, rather than humans racing each other in a race for the prettiest turkey. In 1972, CBS News did an "On the Road" report from Cuero on Christmas in the U.S., including a turkey call from the town's mayor, who said the town was in a good mood. The town has a tradition of holding a turkey festival each year, with turkey races, turkey tosses, and turkey races for the best turkey in the town. The turkey race is one of the most popular events, with the best turkeys winning the race. The best turkey is the one that wins the title of best turkey, which is awarded to the winner of the turkey contest. The winner is the person who raises the highest number of turkeys for the contest. In the past, the winner has been the person with the most turkeys in the contest, but now it is up to the winners to raise the most in the competition. The event is open to the public, but only the winners are allowed to take part.

Parks and recreation

Cuero has many places for recreation, including a baseball complex, a golf course, volleyball courts, tennis courts, a basketball pavilion, and a park area with access to public swimming pool. Cuero also has a public library, a post office, a bank, a theater, a bowling alley, and many other places for people to socialize.Cuero is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, which was established in 1903. The town also has its own version of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. Cuerero is the site of the World Series, which began in 1916. The city also hosts the Fiesta de Cuero, which started in 1929. The U.S. Open is held in Cuero every four years, and the World Cup is held every year in June. The village also hosts a number of other events, such as the Pan-American Games and the Pan American Games, which are held in the town's fairgrounds. The community has a large number of restaurants, many of which are open to the public, and has a variety of parks and other facilities for outdoor activities, including tennis, baseball, golf, basketball, and other sports. The area also has access to a public pool, which is used for swimming and other leisure activities. The local library has a library, as well as several other facilities, including the baseball complex and the basketball pavilions and a volleyball court. The City of Cuero is served by the Cuero Independent School District. John C. French serves prekindergarten and kindergarten. Hunt Elementary serves grades 13, Cuero Intermediate School serves grades 46. Cuero Junior High serves grades 78, and Cuero High School servesgrades 912. St. Michael's Catholic School has been providing education for the children of DeWitt County for over 130 years. The school has a fully accredited early childhood program. It offers education for kindergarten-grade 6. It is located in Cuero's central business district, near the intersection of I-35 and I-20. The city is home to a number of businesses, including a bank, a gas station, a convenience store, and a bank with a branch in the center of the city. The Cuero School District is a member of the Texas State Board of Education, which has a board of trustees that represents the entire state of Texas. The district also has a chapter of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), which provides education for students in grades 1-12. It also has an association with the Texas Association of Pupils, which serves students in kindergarten-6th grade. It was founded in 1903 and is the oldest school in the state.
