Denton is a city in and the county seat of Denton County, Texas, United States. With a population of 139,869 as of 2020, it is the 27th-most populous city in Texas. The city was incorporated in 1866 and named after pioneer and Texas militia captain John B. Denton. The arrival of a railroad line in the city in 1881 spurred population, and the establishment of the University of North Texas in 1890 and Texas Woman's University in 1901 distinguished the city from neighboring regions. The North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, Denton Arts and Jazz Festival, and Thin Line Fest attract over 300,000 people to the city each year. Its diverse citizenry is represented by a nonpartisan city council, and numerous county and state departments have offices in theCity. As of 2011, the city was the seventh-fastest growing city with a population over 100,000 in the U.S., and the 12th most populous in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. It is known for its active music life; the city experiences hot, humid summers and few extreme weather events. It was named after a preacher and lawyer who was killed in 1841 during a skirmish with the Kichai people in what is now Tarrant County. In February 1861, a statewide referendum was held and Texans voted to join the Confederate States of America. After the Civil War, "Freedmen Settlements" were started throughout the South. In 1920, the residents were forcibly removed by the City government to make way for a park. Originally scheduled to open in September 1913, it was mysteriously burned down the Sunday night prior to opening to the scheduled opening.
History
Denton is the primary city name, but also Corinth are acceptable city names or spellings. Denton was founded in 1857 as the county seat of Denton County. The city grew from 26,844 in 1960 to 48,063 in 1980. The population jumped from 66,270 in 1990 to 80,537 in 2000. In May 2006, Houston-based real estate company United Equities purchased the 100-block of Fry Street and announced that several of the historic buildings would be demolished. The Denton City Council approved a new proposal for the area from Dinerstein Cos in 2010. Gerard Hudspeth became Denton's first African-American mayor in 2013. Denton is now home to the University of North Texas and the Texas Woman's University. It is also home to Denton International Airport, a major airport for the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The town is located on the Texas-Mexico border, and has a Friendship City relationship with Santa Rosa de Múzquiz, Mexico. It was named for John Denton, a preacher and lawyer who was killed in 1841 during a skirmish with the Kichai people in what is now Tarrant County. In 1857, a commission laid out the city and named the first streets. On July 8, 1860, approximately one-half of the downtown Square burned down in what was later called the "Texas Troubles". The arrival of the Texas and Pacific Railway in 1881 gave Denton its first rail connection and brought an influx of people to the area. North Texas Normal College was established in 1890, and the Girls' Industrial College, now Texas Women's University, was founded.
Geography
Denton is located on the northern edge of the DallasFort Worth metropolitan area. The area is within USDA hardiness zone 8a, which means it is humid subtropical and is very dry in the summer and cool in the winter. It is located near the Barnett Shale, a geological formation believed to contain large quantities of natural gas. Lewisville Lake, a man-made reservoir, is located 15 miles (24 km) south of the city and is the largest reservoir in Texas.

It is estimated that over 20,000 people work in the educational services, health and social services, manufacturing, and general retail sectors of the Denton economy. It was estimated that more than $1.2 billion was spent on construction projects in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year, with the majority of the work being in the construction industry. It has been estimated that about $2.1 billion will be spent in the second quarter of 2020, with most of the construction work to be done in the oil and natural gas sector. It will be the first time since the 1990s that the city has had such a high level of construction activity in a quarter of its economy. The number of construction jobs is expected to continue to rise in the next few years, with many of the jobs expected to be in the energy and mining sectors. The construction industry is expected in the future to play a major role in the growth of the city.
Arts and cultural life
Denton is home to several annual artistic and cultural events that cater to residents and tourists. The annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo began in 1928 and promotes the cowboy culture of Texas. The city-sponsored Denton Arts and Jazz Festival attracts over 200,000 people each year for live music, food, crafts, and recreation at Civic Center Park. Denton houses the largest community garden in the United States, specifically Shiloh Field Community Garden, which measures at 14.5 acres of land. The Denton Confederate Soldier Monument, a 12-foot tall (3.7 m) granite, arched monument topped with a statue of a Confederate soldier, was erected in 1918 in the Denton Square on the courthouse lawn by the Daughters of the Confederacy. The monument was controversial, and though previous attempts to remove it were unsuccessful, Denton County Commissioners unanimously approved its removal on June 9, 2020. In 2014, the Huffington Post listed Denton as the number-one emerging cultural hot spot in Texas to visit, while referring to the city as "practically an indie band factory at this point" The city has also hosts the annual film and music festival, Thin Line Fest, each year since 2007. It is the longest running documentary film festival in Texas and attracts thousands of tourists to Denton over a few days each year. The downtown square is populated by local shops and restaurants, some of which have been in business since the 1940s. The former county courthouse was restored for the Texas Sesquicentennial in 1986.

Denton is the county seat of Denton County. Residents elect a mayor, four single-member district council members, and two at-large members. The city manager is appointed by the Denton City Council. Denton is a part of the Sister Cities International program and maintains cultural and economic exchange programs with its sister cities, Madaba in Jordan and San Nicolás de los Garza in Mexico. The Denton State Supported Living Center is the largest residential facility for people with developmental disabilities in Texas. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has its Region VI headquarters in Denton. The current mayor is Gerard Hudspeth, who was first elected in 2020, and then re-elected in 2022. In 2014, city voters approved a ban on fracking. In 2022, city Voters approved decriminalization of possession of misdemeanor amounts of marijuana. Almost all of the city is in the newly drawn Texas House district 64. Some portions of south, north, and far east Denton are in either Texas House districts 57 or 106. Starting in 2023, most of DENTON will be represented by U.S. House 13th Congressional district. The southwest portions of theCity will berepresented by U-S. 26th Congressional District. The City of Denton is a voluntary member of the North Central Texas Council of Governments association. The purpose of the association is to coordinate individual and collective local governments and facilitate regional solutions, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and enable joint decisions. All city council and mayor terms are two-year terms, different from most cities in the area.
Education
The Denton Independent School District provides the public primary and secondary educational system in the majority of the city. The Roman Catholic Immaculate Conception Catholic School, a K8 school of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth, opened in 1995. According to the 2010 United States Census, 35.1% of all adults over the age of 25 in Denton have obtained a bachelor's degree, as compared to the state average of 25.8%. The high school residential program Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, for gifted students, is in DENTON. North Central Texas College (NCTC) is a public community college based in Gainesville, Texas. TWU's College of Nursing is the second largest in Texas and in the top 20 of largest nursing programs in the United States, and the school's nursing doctoral program is the largest in the world.
