Carrollton

Carrollton is a city in Dallas, Denton, and Collin counties in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 133,434, making it the 23rd-most populous city in Texas. The area was first settled by Jared Ford in 1842 by William and Mary Larner on a site within the Peters Colony grant. In 1844, the A. W. Perry family claimed land in the area around Trinity Mills where, in partnership with Wade H. Witt, a mill was established. It is most likely that Carrollton was named for Carrollton, Illinois, the original home of many of these settlers.Early on, Carrollton's livelihood was exclusively agricultural, but following the construction of the Dallas-Wichita Railroad through Trinity Mills in 1878, the community began to grow in its industrial significance. By 1885, Carrollon had flour mills, cotton gins, two churches, a school, and a population of 150. A gravel industry that began in Carrollton in 1912 transformed the city, by the late 1940s, to a "grain and gravel" town. The city also supported a brick plant and a dairy industry, and National Metal Products established itself in the city in 1946. After World War II the city grew rapidly, and it grew to 4,242 in 1960 and 13,855 in 1970. As a suburb of Dallas, in 2006 named to America's "Top 100 Places to Live" by Relocate America. In 2008 it was named by Money magazine the 15th best place to live among small cities.

History

Carrollton was first settled by Jared Ford in 1842 on a site within the Peters Colony grant. In 1844, the A. W. Perry family claimed land in the area around Trinity Mills where, in partnership with Wade H. Witt, a mill was established. By 1885, Carrollton had flour mills, cotton gins, two churches, a school, and a population of 150. In 1913 Carrollton was officially incorporated, and W.F. Vinson was elected mayor. A gravel industry that began in Carrollton in 1912 transformed the city, by the late 1940s, to a "grain and gravel" town. After World War II the city grew rapidly. In 1950 its population stood at 1,610, and it grew to 4,242 in 1960 and 13,855 in 1970. By 1983, the population was 52,000, by 1990, it had reached 82,169, and by 2010 the population had grown to 119,097. As a suburb of Dallas, in 2006 named to America's "Top 100 Places to Live" by Relocate America. In 2008 it was named by Money magazine the 15th best place to live among small cities. In 1996 there was a successful recall of Mayor Gary Blanscet and council members Linda Caldwell, Bernis Francis, Stan Hampton, Bob Novinsky, Bert Colter & Stan Sewell. All were removed from office and replaced in a special election. In 2006, it was selected as the 19th best places to live in the United States.

Geography

Carrollton is located in portions of three counties: Dallas, Denton, and Collin. On average, the warmest month is July. Carrollton is considered to have a humid subtropical climate. The highest recorded temperature was 112 °F in 1980. The average coolest month is January. The most precipitation on average occurs in May. The lowest recorded temperature is 1 °F. The city has a population of 1,816. It is located on the Texas-Arkansas border. It has a total area of 37.1 square miles (96.1 km²), of which 36.3 square miles is land and 0.81 square miles, or 2.19%, is water. The town has a high school population of 603. The high school has a combined enrollment of 2,817. The school district has an average enrollment of 602. It also has a low school enrollment rate of 1.7%. The town's high school football team has a winning record of 3-1. The football team is known as the Carrollton Trotters. The team's mascot is the Trotter. It was named after Carrollton, Texas, where the town was founded in 1881. The current mayor of Carrollton was elected in 1998. The mayor is a former mayor of the town, who served from 1998 to 2008. The council has a current population of 703. There are no schools in Carrollton. The community has a large Hispanic population, with the majority of its residents living in Dallas.

Demographics

In 1920, Carrollton had a population of 573. In 2010, its population was 119,097, becoming the 23rd-most populous city in Texas. Since the 2010 census, non-Hispanic whites have made up 37.42% of the population, with Hispanic or Latino Americans increasing to 31.68%. Asian Americans grew to 16.76%. Pacific Islanders and people of other races made up a constituent minority of 0.07% and 0.4% each, and multiracial Americans increased to 3.53%. The median income for a household in the city was $70,960 in 2010. By 2020, the median household income increased to $82,345; families had a median income of $95,235; married-couple families $105,361; and non-family households $58,811. An estimated 6.5% of. the population lived at or below the poverty line from 2015 to 2020. The city's population became more racially, ethnically, and culturally diverse with continued immigration and birth rates among traditional minorities. The racial makeup of the city in 2010 was 63.6% White, 8.4%. Black or African American, 0.6%. American Indian and Alaska Native, 13.4. Asian,0.03% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 10.8% some other race, and 3.1% from two or more races. The per capita income for the city is $26,746. About 4.1%. of families and 5.6 of the population were below the Poverty line, including 7.4 of those under 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

Carrollton is home to the largest Korean community in Texas and the southern United States. Koreatown Carrollton is located at the intersection of Old Denton Road and President George Bush Turnpike. The city has become the headquarters for FASTSIGNS International, Inc., Halliburton's Easywell in Carrollton, Heelys, Inc. and Motel 6 (G6 Hospitality), SECURUS Technologies, and Woot Inc. (Subsidiary of Amazon). It is also home to a large number of Asian restaurants and businesses further stimulating the local and regional economies. It is a suburb of Dallas, Texas, and is located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It has a population of about 4,000. It was founded in 1881. It became a suburb in 1883. It's located in North Texas, Texas and is near Dallas, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Fort Worth. Its population has grown to more than 3,000 since the 1950s. It also has a large Korean community, which is the largest in the southern U.S. and one of the fastest-growing in the country. In 2010, the city had more than 2,000 people living in the area. It was formed to coordinate individual and collective local governments and facilitate regional solutions, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and enable joint decisions. Most of Carrollton is a part of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District which is within Dallas and Denton counties. There are three major charter schools in Carrollton: Carrollton Classical Academy, Harmony School of Innovation, and Trivium Academy. The Japanese School of Dallas conducts its classes at Ted Polk Middle School. Carrollton Public Library has two locations: Hebron & Josey and Josey Ranch Lake. The 13,000-capacity Tommy Standridge Stadium is located in Carrollon; it is mostly used for high school football and soccer. Areas in Dallas County and in CFBISD (which is partially in Denton County) are in the zone for Dallas College (formerly Dallas County Community College or DCCCD) Areas in Collin County are inThe zone for Collin College. areas in most of Denton county (including the Lewisville School District) are. in the North Central Texas College district. The school has its main offices in Farmers Branch. At one time Coram Deo Academy had a campus in Carrollson. There is a private school in the area called The Saint Anthony School, which holds classes at the First Baptist Carrollton Josey Campus. The St Anthony School also has a campus at Carrollton Christian Academy, which has classes at First Methodist Carrollton. The city has a public library with two locations, one in Hebron and one in Josey, and a private library at Hebron Ranch Lake, which is also in the city.

Transportation

Carrollton is connected to the Metroplex's highway network by Interstate 35E and the President George Bush Turnpike. The Green Line of Dallas Area Rapid Transit's DART Rail system terminates at North Carrollton/Frankford Station. Trinity Mills is also the southern terminus of Denton County's A-train, which provides service to Lewisville and Denton. Downtown Carrollton is a planned stop on DART's Silver Line, which is under construction and expected to open in 2023.Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is five miles southwest of Carrollton, and Dallas Love Field is eight miles south. The city is also home to the Dallas Cowboys' Dallas Cowboys training facility, which opened in 1996. The Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Mavericks are all based in the Dallas area, with the Dallas Mavericks winning the Super Bowl in 2008 and the Dallas Rangers winning the World Series in 2010. The Texas Rangers won the National Football League's Division I championship in 2010 and 2011. The Cowboys also won the NFC East Division in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, and the National League of American Football Championship in 2012. The N.C. State University of Texas is located in Carrollton and has a football team that competes in the NCAA Division I. The University of North Texas has a women's basketball program that has a team that has won the NCAA championship in 2014 and 2015. The university's women's football program has won two NCAA titles in the last three years.
