Powell, formerly known as Powell Station, is a census-designated place in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. The area is located in the Emory Road corridor (State Route 131), just north of Knoxville, southeast of Clinton, and east of Oak Ridge. The community's name is derived from the Powell Station train stop, which was in turn named for Columbus Powell, a prominent local resident. The largest employer in Powell is DeRoyal Industries, which manufactures and markets medical products. Powell was home to a Levi's jeans manufacturing plant that closed in 2002. In March 2013, following the Knoxville City Council's annexation of the airstrip site, the Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission approved plans for a shopping complex on the site including a Kroger supermarket, Regal Cinemas theater, Kohl's department store, and other retail developments. The Weigel's chain of convenience stores started and is still headquartered in Powell. Powell High School constructed a new football stadium in 2009 and the football team is sponsored by Nike. The Panthers were Tennessee State Runners-Up in 1991 and 2011. The town is well-noted throughout Knox County for its intense support of Powell High school Panther athletics. It is situated in the Beaver Creek Valley between Copper Ridge and Beaver Ridge, two narrow ridges typical of the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians. It is about halfway between Halls and Karns, and roughly spans the area between Interstate 75 to the east, and Clinton Highway (U.S. Route 25W) to the west.

History

Powell was established in 1789 (two years before the establishment of Knoxville) by settlers passing through East Tennessee into the frontier. The community's name is derived from the Powell Station train stop, which was in turn named for Columbus Powell, a prominent local resident. The influence of the Old South's culture can still be seen today in Powell, mainly by architecture. Several of the older homes in the original part of Powell are believed to have been used as Confederate hospitals during the Civil War. From 1951 to 2012, Powell was home to the Powell STOLport, a rural airstrip located adjacent to the I-75 and Emory Road (SR 131) interchange. In March 2013, following the Knoxville City Council's annexation of the airstrip site, plans were approved for a shopping complex on the site including a Kroger supermarket, Regal Cinemas theater, Kohl's department store, and other retail developments. The shopping complex is expected to open in 2015. The town's population is estimated to be around 2,000. It is located in the eastern part of Knox County, east of downtown Knoxville and north of the city of Chattanooga. It has a population of about 2,200. The city's population was 3,000 in the 2010 census. The population of Powell was 2,100 in the 2000 census. It's located on the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway (now part of the Norfolk Southern line) The town is home to several Antebellum homes located along Emory road and the original neighborhoods of Powell.

Knoxville lies opposite Beaver Ridge to the southeast, and the town of Powell lies to the north. The town of Knoxville is located to the south of Powell, on the Tennessee-Tennessee border, and is known as the "City of the Big Mountain" The town has a population of about 2,000. The county seat of Powell is about 1,500, while the city of Karns is around 1,200, and it is located on the Ohio-Kentucky border. The village of Powell was founded in the early 1800s, when the area was known as "Powell County" and was named for the Powell River, which runs through the town. It was named after Powell, a former member of the KKK, who lived in the area in the 1800s and early 1900s.
