Milbank is a city in Grant County, South Dakota, located along the South Fork of the Whetstone River. The city was founded in 1880 when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway first laid rails into South Dakota. It was named in honor of railroad director Jeremiah Milbank. It is the county seat of Grant County. Milbank is the birthplace of American Legion Baseball, which is now enjoyed by high school aged youth on more than five thousand teams in all fifty states. The population of the city was 3,544 at the 2020 census. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 2.84 square miles (7.36 km²), of which 2.76 square miles of it is land and 0.08 sq miles (0.21 km²) is water. History
The city was founded in 1880 when the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway first laid rails into South Dakota. It was named in honor of railroad director Jeremiah Milbank. The city was incorporated in 1881. It is located on the banks of the South Dakota River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in the city's downtown area. It also has a airport, which opened in 1883. The town's population is about 1,500, with most of its people living in and around the central part of the town. It's located near the junction of the U.S. and South Dakota rivers, which run into each other in the north and south. The river is also known as the Milbank River, after the railroad director who laid the rails into the state in the 1880s.
