Mitchell is a city in and the county seat of Davison County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 15,660 at the 2020 census making it the sixth most populous city in South Dakota. The first settlement at Mitchell was made in 1879. Mitchell was incorporated in 1883. It was named for Milwaukee banker Alexander Mitchell, President of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad (Milwaukee Road) Mitchell is located at 43°4250N 98°135W (43.713896, -98.026282), on the James River. The city has a total area of 12.14 square miles (31.44 km²), of which 11.14square miles (28.85 km²) is land and 1.00 square mile (2.59 km²") is water. Mitchell has a humid continental climate, the Upper Midwest, with cold winters and warm sometimes humid summers. The wettest month is June, with an average of 3.52 inches (89.4 mm) of rain, and the driest month of the year is January, with only 0.47 inches (11.9mm) of rainfall. Mitchell is in Tornado Alley, so thunderstorms, often spawning tornadoes, can be expected. The median age in the city was 36.8 years, with 22.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 12.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.8% were from 25 to 44; and 18.2% were 65 years of age or older.

History

Mitchell is the primary city name, but also Loomis are acceptable city names or spellings, Betts, Lake Mitchell on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Mitchell, South Dakota. The first settlement at Mitchell was made in 1879. Mitchell was incorporated in 1883. It was named for Milwaukee banker Alexander Mitchell, President of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad (Milwaukee Road). Mitchell is located on the Wisconsin River, which flows into the Chicago River. It is located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the Canadian province of Wisconsin. The town has a population of 2,000, and is home to the Mitchell Museum, which was established in 1881. The Mitchell River runs through the town, and was named after Alexander Mitchell. The city's name is derived from Mitchell, the name of the first settlement in Mitchell, Wisconsin, in 1878. It also means "Mitchell River" in German, which means "river" or "river". It is also known as the Mitchell River or Mitchell River in English, and as the Milwaukee River by the German name of "Mitchel" for "Milwaukee" and "River" for the railroad. Mitchell has been assigned the ZIP code 57301 and the FIPS place code 43100. The city is located in the South Carolina Coastal Plain region. The James River runs through the city, which is located on the North Carolina-Mississippi state line. It is also on the Virginia-Tennessee state line, which runs through Mitchell. Mitchell is located near the junction of the James and Tennessee rivers. It has a population of 2,816. The town has a post office with a ZIP code of 57300 and a place code of 43100, as well as an FIPS number code. It was founded in the early 1800s and was named after the town of Mitchell, South Carolina, which was then part of the United States. The first post office opened in 1805. Attractions

Mitchell is home to the Corn Palace and the Dakota Discovery Museum. The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is an archaeological site where scientists are excavating a Native American village. Mitchell area also boasts several state champion trees: Black Cherry, Black Locust, Siberian Elm, and Tulip Tree. Mitchell was featured in the seventeenth episode of the Small Town News Podcast, an improv comedy podcast that takes listeners on a fun and silly virtual trip to a small town in America each week, in which the hosts improvise scenes inspired by local newspaper stories. The Corn Palace is decorated with several colors of dried corn and grains, creating murals. The museum covers the time period from 1600, when the Native Americans were still largely undiscovered, to 1939, the end of the Great Depression. It also features artists such as Harvey Dunn, James Earle Fraser, Charles Hargens and Oscar Howe. Two new features of the museum are Discovery Land, a hands-on activity area for children ages five to ten, and the Heritage Gardens Project, which brings indigenous plants to the gardens surrounding the museum and historical buildings. The museum holds one of the most complete and pristine collections of American Indian quill and bead-works. It is also the home of the Mitchell High School prom, the local high school prom, trade shows, staged entertainment and the Shriner's Circus. The city is also home to a state champion tree, the Black Cherry. The town is located on the banks of Lake Mitchell.

Education

The campus of Dakota Wesleyan University is located in southwest Mitchell. The university was founded in 1872 and is one of the oldest private universities in the United States. The campus is home to more than 2,000 students. It is located on the campus of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The school also offers a number of other degree programs and certificates in addition to the university's main degree program in business and journalism. The college is currently in its ninth year of existence. It was established in 1876. It has a campus of 2,500 students and 1,200 faculty members.
