Ridgeland is a town in Jasper and Beaufort counties, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,749 at the 2020 census, a 7.1% decrease from 2010. It has been the county seat of Jasper County since the county's formation in 1912. The town is home to the Ridgeland Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison operated by the South Carolina Department of Corrections. It is part of the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort metropolitan area, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. The area of the town as of 2010 was 18 times greater than its 2000 area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²) The town limits now extend east into Beaufort County as far as the west bank of the Broad River. The main interchanges within the main community are at Exit 18 of the US 17-95, and at Exit 22 of Switzerland, which is known locally as Jacob Boulevard. The major highway through the town runs through the Eastern Seaboard, connecting Charleston and Savannah, beyond which is the town of Hardeeville. It also has an interchange with I-95 at Jacob Boulevard, which has an interchanges with Exit 22 and Exit 22, which joins it at exit 22-17, until it joins an overlap at Exit 21-18, at which point it joins Exit 22-19, and it joins the main highway until it enters the town at Exit 17-18.

Geography

Ridgeland is the primary city name, but also Coosawhatchie are acceptable city names or spellings, Gillisonville, Mitchellville, Switzerland on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Ridgeland, South Carolina. Ridgeland is in northeastern Jasper County, with the center of town sitting on a low ridge at an elevation of 62 feet (19 m) above sea level. The town limits now extend east into Beaufort County as far as the west bank of the Broad River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 44.7 square miles (115.8 km²) The town's area as of 2010 was 18 times greater than its 2000 area of 2.4square miles (6.3 km²). The town is 36 miles (58 km) southwest of Walterboro, 32 miles (51 km) south of Hampton, 31 miles (50 km) north of Savannah, Georgia, 14 miles (23 km) east of Hardeeville, and 7 miles (11 km) west of Tillman. The area of Ridgeland as of the 2010 Census was 44.4 square miles, or 0.59% of the town's total area, including 0.3 square miles of land and 0.7 sq miles (0.7 km² of water). The population was 1,071 as of Census 2010, down from 1,081 in 2000. The population as of census 2010 was 903, up from 902 in 2000, and up from 803 in 2007. It has a population of 1,061, or 1.08% of its total area. It is located on the North Carolina-South Carolina border.

Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 3,758 people, 1,148 households, and 778 families residing in the town. The presence of the Ridgeland Correctional Institution heavily skews the sex ratio. The town's population was spread out, with 14.9% under the age of 18, 16.6% from 18 to 24, 44.5% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, There were 279.8 males. The population density was 1,046.6 people per square mile (403.4/km²). There were 597 housing units at an average density of 248.1 per squaremile (95.6/ km²) The median income for a household in the city was $31,991, and $37,647 for a family. The per capita income for the town was $7,394. About 20.0% of families and 25.2%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 32.7% of those under age 18 and 14.5. of those age 65 or over. The town is home to the state's only prison, Ridgeline Correctional Institution. The prison is located in the center of the town, and is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. It is the largest prison in the state.

Education

Ridgeland is home to Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School. Thomas Heyward Academy, which opened in 1970 as a segregation academy is located inside of the town limits. The town is also the site of the former town of Hardeeville, which was founded in 1883. The city's population is around 2,000. It is located in the eastern part of the county. The county has a population of about 2,200. It has an estimated population of 3,000, with the majority of its residents living in the town's downtown area. It also has a number of other unincorporated communities, such as Hardee County, which is located outside of the city limits. It was once known as the "City of the Stars" because of its large number of white residents. It now has a reputation for being a safe town, with many of its citizens living in and around the town. It's also home to two public schools, one of which is a public elementary school, and one high school, both of which are surrounded by the town by private schools. The community has a history of racial segregation, with a high school opening in the 1970s as a "segregation academy" The town also has one of the nation's largest black populations, with more than 1,000 people living there in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Its population is about 1,200, with most of the residents being African-American. The majority of the population lives in the city's central area.

Transportation

I-95, the major north-south highway on the Eastern Seaboard, runs through Ridgeland. US 17, a principal route connecting Charleston, Savannah, and beyond, enters the community after passing through Switzerland. The CSX Railway's Charleston Subdivision (also known as the Charleston-Savannah Railway) currently operates both freight trains and passenger trains (via Amtrak) along the lines, but do not stop at Rid geland. The town is home to the South Carolina Museum of History and Art, which was founded in 1875. The museum is located in the town's historic center, which is also home to a museum of African-American history and culture, which dates back to the 19th century. It is also the home of the North Carolina College of Arts and Sciences, which opened in 1881. The college is located on the campus of the University of South Carolina at St. Augustine, where it is affiliated with the College of Southern Engineering and Technology. The campus is also known as North Carolina State University, where the college's business school is based. The university is located near the town of Hardeeville, in the northern part of the state. It was founded by the College of South Carolina in 1883. The University of South Carolina in 1894 was the first college to open in the state, and it is the only one of its kind in the United States. The College of Southeastern Institute of Technology is also located in Ridgeland, and was founded there in 1894.
