Tiverton is located on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, across the Sakonnet River from Aquidneck Island. Together with the adjacent town of Little Compton, the area is disconnected from the rest of Rhode Island. The two beaches in Tiverton are Fogland Beach and Grinnell's Beach, both of which are popular with windsurfing and kite-surfing. The town was incorporated in 1747 as an outpost of East Freetown, Massachusetts, but was annexed to Rhode Island in Dec. 1747. The population was 16,359 at the 2020 census. The area has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.1 km²), of which 29.4 sq miles (76.0 km²) is land and 18.0sq mi (7.0 sq mi; 19.16%) is water. The northern portion of the town is also known as North Tiveron, Rhode Island, and has a population of 15,260 (as of the census of 2000) The town is located along a granite ridge which runs in a northsouth direction, rising approximately 170 feet in elevation from the bay. The median income for a household in the town was $49,977, and the median age for a family was $58,917. In the town, the per capita income for the population was $22,866. About 2.9% of families and 4.5% of the population were below the poverty line.

Geography

Tiverton is located on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, across the Sakonnet River from Aquidneck Island. Together with the adjacent town of Little Compton, the area is disconnected from the rest of Rhode Island. Much of the town is located along a granite ridge which runs in a northsouth direction, rising approximately 170 feet in elevation from the bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tiverton has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.1 km²), of which 29.4 sq miles (76.0 km²) is land and 18.0 sq km² (7.0 mi; 19.16%) is water. The northern portion of greater Tiveron is also known as North tiverton, Rhode Island, and is located in the northern part of Mount Hope Bay. The town has a population of 2,816. It is one of the smallest towns in the state, with the population of 1,788 in 2010. The city is home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is based in the nearby town of Woonsocket. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The Battle of Wounded Knee took place between 1875 and 1877. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located at the base of the Mount Hope Peninsula, near the town's northern tip. The area is known for its granite outcrops, which can be seen at the highway cut for Route 24.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 15,260 people, 6,077 households, and 4,405 families residing in the town. The population density was 519.8 inhabitants per square mile (200.7/km²). There were 6,474 housing units at an average density of 220.5 per squaremile (85.1/ km²) The racial makeup of the town was 97.98% White, 0.43% Black or African American, 0,17% Native American,0.39% Asian, 0.,03% Pacific Islander, 0, 22% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population. The median income for a household in theTown was $49,977, and the median income. for a family was $58,917. About 2.9% of families and 4.5% of people were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 9.1% ofThose age 65 or over. The town is home to the Tiverton High School, which was founded in 1903. The school was the first in the state to open in the 19th century. It is located on the banks of the Connecticut River. It was the site of the first U.S. Civil War battle, which took place in 1875. The U.N. World Health Organization has a mission to improve the quality of life for all people in the world.

Beaches

Fogland Beach has lifeguards, and can be used for fishing, walking, and wildlife/nature observation. Grinnell's Beach provides an excellent windsurfing area, and a view of the Sakonnet River and Portsmouth shoreline. The town also offers kayaking and paddleboarding programs through a local company. Strong cool breezes blow throughout the year at Fogland Beach. The two beaches in Tiverton are located on the Sak onnet River, and are popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers. They are also a popular destination for kayakers and paddleboarders, with rentals being available. The beaches are located near the town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, which is on the shore of the Sakonnet River, and has a number of beaches of its of its own, as well as the nearby town of Portsmouth on the other side of the river.

History

Tiverton was incorporated by English colonists in 1694 within Bristol County in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. In 1746, in the final settlement of a long colonial boundary dispute between Rhode Island and Massachusetts, Tivertontogether with its fellow towns along the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, Barrington, Bristol and Little Compton, and the town of Cumberland, to the north of Providence, were annexed to Rhode Island. Men from the Tiverton outpost took part in the Battle of Freetown, on May 25, 1778, during the Revolutionary War. In July 1997 the National Weather Service (NWS) based in Taunton, Massachusetts established a cooperative weather station in the Stone Bridge Village section of town. During the 1960s, Route 24 was constructed through the northern part of the town. In 2002 contaminated soil that was discovered in the Bay Street neighborhood was discovered. Contaminants including cyanide arsenic, lead, and more were found at levels above residential guidelines. Residents have been prohibited from digging in the soil, which meant that residents of this neighborhood have lost their home equity. Since the mid-20th century, TIVERton has grown as a summer resort and residential area, and as a suburb of Fall River, Massachusetts. In the 1920s and early 1930s, it was the home of the Fall River Marksmen, one of the eras most successful soccer teams. Mark's Stadium was used as a home ground by other local teams, most notably Fall River F.C and Ponta Delgada S.C.

Historic places

The town of Tiverton is home to a number of historic places. The town is also home to the First Baptist Church and the Four Corners Historic District. The area is also known for its mill and farm land. The village is also the site of several historic homes and a historic district.

Education

Tiverton has five public schools: Poccasset Elementary, Fort Barton Elementary, Ranger Elementary School, Tiverton Middle School, and TIVERton High School. The town is its own district and a part of the Newport County district. The school district is part of Newport County School District 1, which covers Newport County. The high school is in Newport County High School District 2, which includes Newport County Middle School and Newport County Elementary. The middle school and high school are part of District 3, which serves Newport County Schools District 1. The elementary school was recently demolished and rebuilt, and the high school was built in the 1970s and 1980s, but was closed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is located in the town of 2,000 people, about 50 miles south of Newport, Rhode Island, on the New Jersey Turnpike. It has a population of about 2,500 people, or 1.5% of the town's population. It was the site of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and '70s, and is now home to a number of colleges and universities, including the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island. It also has a small airport, which opened in the 1980s and 1990s. The city is located on the banks of the Neches River, which runs through the town, and was once a major shipping route. It's also the location of the New England Shakespeare Festival, which takes place in the summer.

Library

The Tiverton Public Library was chartered by the state in 1927. The library was housed in several locations around town over the years. In June 2015 a new 24,000 square foot building was opened, incorporating a meeting hall, teen room, cafe, children's library, and public courtyard spaces. The new library received an AIA Rhode Island Design Award for Merit in 2018. A branch, the Union Public Library located at 3832 Main Road, has operated on that site almost continuously since 1820, although the current Early Victorian building dates from 1868. A paid staff member is assisted by volunteers from the union Public Library Association to provide a reading room and library services. The new building, designed by Union Studio architects, features a clock tower and gabled ends. It is part of the TIVERton Four Corners Historic District, and is located on the corner of Main Road and Main Street in the town's central business district. The current library is open to the public and has a waiting list of up to 20 people. It also has a cafe and a children's reading room for children as well as a cafe for adults. It was built in June 2015 and features a new clock tower, gable ends, and a teen room. The building was designed by union Studio architects. It received a AIA RI Design Award in 2018 for a design that received a rating of "A" and "B" in the AIA's Design category. It has been open to public use since June 2015.
