Mercer is a borough in and the county seat of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,982 at the 2020 census. The community was named after Brigadier General Hugh Mercer. The U.S. post office in Mercer contains a mural, Clearing the Land, painted in 1940 by Lorin Thompson. The Mercer County Court House and Christiana Lindsey House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Camp Nazareth, an Eastern Orthodox camp for youth and young adults, has been on 300 acres in Mercer since 1977. The borough has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all land. It is part of the YoungstownWarren metropolitan area, which includes Youngstown, Ohio, and Mahoning County, Ohio. Camp Nazareth, an Eastern Orthodox camp for youth and young adults, has been on 300 acres in Mercer since 1977. The camp is under the jurisdiction of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese, which is itself under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. It has been accredited by the American Camp Association since its founding. The borough is home to the New Jersey Museum of Natural History, which was founded in 1872. The museum is located in the former town of Mercer, New Jersey, and is open to the public. It is also home to New Jersey State Museum, which opened in 1874. The Museum's collection includes works by famous artists such as Rembrandt, Matisse, and Van Cortlandt, as well as other works of art by lesser-known artists. It also contains a collection of photographs of Mercer's residents, including photos of the borough's residents in the 1930s and 1940s. The city is also the site of the Mercer Museum, a public museum that was opened in the 1950s and is still open today. The town is also known as the birthplace of New Jersey Governor Tom Corbett, who was born in Mercer.
