Hermitage

Hermitage is a city in western Mercer County, Pennsylvania, located 60 miles (97 km) north of Pittsburgh and 67 miles (108 km) southeast of Cleveland. The population was 16,230 at the 2020 census. It is part of the YoungstownWarren metropolitan area. Hermitage was struck by an F5 tornado that killed 18 people and injured 310 on May 31, 1985. It was the strongest tornado ever recorded in Pennsylvania. The city is located at 41°1357N 80°2738W (41.232456, 80.460464). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.6 square miles (77 km²), of which 29.5 sq miles (76 km²) is land and 0.1sq miles (0.26 km²) is water. The Shenango River Lake north of Hermitages is run by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Based on area, HermitAGE is the third largest city in Pennsylvania, after Pittsburgh and Youngstown. The town is located on the Susquehanna River, a tributary of the Allegheny River, which flows into the Ohio River. It has a population of 16,157 (as of the census of 2000), with 6,809 households, and 4,616 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 94.97% White, 3.09% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 001% Pacific Islander, 080% from two or more races, and0.85% Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

Hermitage is the primary city name, but also Sharon are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Hermitage. The City of Hermitage, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, was first settled in 1796. The Township of Hickory was incorporated in 1832 from portions of the Shenango and Pymatuning townships. The voters approved, by 2,986 to 695, a change in name, and selected "Hermitage" on November 4, 1975. On May 31, 2015, the 30th anniversary of the F5 tornado, an EF0 tornado touched down in the southern part of the town. It flipped two cars, damaged the canopy at a Sheetz gas station and downed a few trees and branches. The tornado was the strongest tornado ever recorded in Pennsylvania. It was the deadliest tornado in the state's history, killing 18 people and injuring 310. The town has a population of about 2,000. The city is located on the banks of the Susquehannock River, which runs through the center of the city. It is located in the eastern part of Mercer County and is the county seat for Mercer County. The City is located near the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which goes into Pennsylvania's Cumberland County, which is in the western portion of the county. The township is located at the junction of the Allegheny and Lehigh Rivers, which run through the town and into the Lehigh Valley. The community is home to the Hickory Hornet High School, which has a mascot of the same name, as well as a number of other sports teams.

It is one of the largest lakes in the U.S., with a surface of more than 1,000 square miles. The town is home to the Pennsylvania State Museum, which was founded in 1875. The museum is located in the historic Hermitages section of the city. The state museum was established in 1876 and is the oldest in the state. It was moved to its current location in 1883. It has a collection of historic buildings that date back to the early 19th century. It also has a museum that was built in the early 20th century, which dates back to 1876. The Shenango River is a tributary of the Delaware River. It runs through the city and is used as a reservoir for the Susquehannock River, which flows into the Allegheny River. The river is also known as the "Shenangango River" and was once part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 16,157 people, 6,809 households, and 4,616 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 94.97% White, 3.09% African American, 0.04% Native American,0.80% Asian, 0.,01% Pacific Islander, 0,23% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population. The city's population was spread out, with 21.7% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 24,7% from 45 to 64, and 23.6%. The median age was 44 years. The median income for a household in theCity was $39,454, and $46,994 for a family. The per capita income for the city is $23,227. About 6.3% of families and 8.2% of people were below the poverty line, including 12.1% of those under age 18 and 6.5 per cent of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was2.87. The population was 548.3 people per square mile (211.7/km²). There were 7,104 housing units at an average density of 241.1 per squaremile (93.1/ km²).

Tourism

Avenue of Flags includes a War on Terror Memorial. Buhl Farm Golf Course is a popular destination for visitors to the park. The park is home to the U.S. National Museum of American History and Culture. It is also home to a number of other tourist attractions, including a museum and a museum of American history and culture.
