Kirkwood is an unincorporated farming town and census-designated place (CDP) in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Lancaster Metro area, in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. As of the 2010 census the population was 396. Kirkwood is home to the trucking company Lester M Prange. Jim Nearys Bait & Tackle is located in Kirkwood. The community drains west to the West Branch of Octoraro Creek and east to the East Branch of the Susquehanna River. The village center has an elevation of 522 feet (159 m) The ZIP code is 17536 and the population density is 110.84 inhabitants per km². The Kirkwood CDP has a total area of 2.22 square miles (5.76 km²), of which 0.004 square miles are water. The post office was established in 1856 and a school was built in 1899. Amish settlers arrived in the Kirkwood in 1935 when Isaac and Mary Zook and their nine children moved to the area. The town is located at coordinates 39° 50' 50" N 76° 5' 0" W, in southeastern Lancaster County. Pennsylvania Route 472 passes through the center of town, leading northwest 6 miles (10 km) to Quarryville and southeast 7 miles (11km) to Oxford in Chester County. The population of Kirkwood was made up of 98.23% white, 0.25% were Amerindian, 0% were Asian, 1.26% were Pacific Islanders, and 0 % belonged to two or more races. Of the total population, 4.29% were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

The post office in Kirkwood was established in 1856. Amish settlers arrived in the area in 1935 when Isaac and Mary Zook and their nine children moved to the area. A school was built inirkwood in 1899. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. It is located on the banks of the Ohio River. It was once known as "Kirkwood Township" and was named after the town's first post office. The name was changed to Kirkwood after the arrival of the Zook family in 1935. The community is now known as Kirkwood and was once called "Kirkwood" before it was renamed after the village's post office, which opened in 1858. It has a history of being home to many Amish families, including the Zooks, who settled in the town in the 1930s and 1940s. The post office was established on August 1, 1856, and closed on July 1, 1950. It reopened again on September 1, 1951. It had a school in 1899, and a post office on August 2, 1951, and another on September 2, 1953. It still has a school on its current site. It also has a church, which was built on the same spot in the early 1900s, and an Amish community center on the corner of the road. The village is home to a number of Amish homes, which were built in the 1920s and 1930s. There are also Amish cemeteries in the community.

The city is home to the Biscayne National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the site of the Bighorne National Park and the Bascule National Park. The Bighorns National Park is located in the north of the town, near the town of Kirkwood, and is a National Park Service Site as well as the Bghorn National Park in the state of Boughton, in which Kirkwood is located. The community has a population of 396, with the population density of 110. 84 inhabitants perkm². It has a total area of 1,856.4 square miles (2,836.4 km²) and a population density is 110.83 inhabitants per kilometre (1,854.4 inhabitants per square mile). The town has a history of being heavily affected by the Spanish-American War, which began in the 17th century.

Kreider's Market was founded by Lloyd and Mary Lois Kreider in Kirkwood. Kirkwood is home to the trucking company Lester M Prange. Jim Nearys Bait & Tackle is located inirkwood. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a bakery, a bank, and a hair salon. It is the site of the annual Kirkwood Farmers' Market, which runs through the end of the year. The market is run by Lloyd Kreider and his wife Mary Lois, who also own the Kirkwood Farmer's Market and the Kreider's Bakery, which also operates in the town. The Kirkwood Town Center is located on the north side of the town, near the intersection of Main Street and Main Avenue. It was founded in the early 20th century by the Kreiders, who lived in a house on the corner of Main and Main Street. It has a population of about 2,000. The city is also the home of the Lester M. Prange Trucking Company, which operates out of a building on Main Street, and Jim Neary's Bait and Tackle, which is also located in the city.
