Moscow

Moscow was settled in the 1830s and is said to be named for the Russian city by early settlers who may have been Russian-German Lutherans. It is located 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Scranton and 24 miles (39 km) southwest of Honesdale. Roaring Brook, a tributary of the Lackawanna River and part of the Susquehanna River watershed, flows northward through Moscow. The borough has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), all land, with negligible surface water. Moscow is serviced by the North Pocono School District. Nearby Covington Township contains the site of North Pocuan High School, North Pocano Head Start, and the LackAWanna College Environmental Institute. The former Lackawannan Railroad station houses a railroad museum and is currently served by excursion trains from nearby Steamtown National Historic Site. The North Pocanto Public Library is located in the borough and is open to the general public. It has a new turf football field, new rubber tennis courts, and multiple weight and training rooms at North Poconte Middle School. The complex includes two grass soccer fields, a softball field, and a baseball field. It also includes a new grass soccer field, a rubber tennis court, and several other sports fields. The school district has five schools within the borough: North. Pocono Middle School, Moscow Elementary Center, Moscow Preschool, and Moscow United Methodist Preschool.

Name

Moscow is the primary city name, but also Covington Township, Covington Twp, Elmhurst Township, Elmhurst Twp, Madison Township, Madison Twp, Roaring Bk Tp, Roaring Brook Twp, Spring Brook Township, Sprng Brk Twp are acceptable city names or spellings. Geography

Moscow is located at 41°2021N 75°3145W (41.339274, -75.529053).According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.8 square miles (7.3 km²), all land, with negligible surface water. Roaring Brook, a tributary of the Lackawanna River and part of the Susquehanna River watershed, flows northward through Moscow, and many tributaries merge there with the brook. The borough is home to the U.S. Air Force Base at Moscow, which is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It is also the home of the New York State Psychiatric Center, which was founded in the early 1900s and is located in the borough of Moscow. The U.N. World Health Organization has a branch office in Moscow, with offices in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. It also has offices in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Newark, New Jersey, as well as in New Jersey and New York City. It has a population of 2,816. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The town's name is derived from the Russian word for "warrior", which means "to fight" or "to defend" and refers to the battle between the British and American armies in the First World War. The town's name is derived from the name of a Native American tribe, the Susquahans. The name of the borough is also used as a name for the town of the same name, but the name has been changed to the borough since the 19th century. The borough's population was 0.9%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7%.

There are no high schools or middle schools in Moscow. The town has one high school and one middle school. The only high school in the town is in the city. The city has one elementary school with 2,000 pupils. It was built in the 1950s. It opened in 1961.
