History

Wayne is the primary city name, but also Chesterbrook, Radnor, Saint Davids, St Davids, Strafford are acceptable city names or spellings. Wayne's development began when a railroad stop called Cleaver's Landing was established. Parcels in the area totaling 293 acres (1.19 km²) were bought by banker J.H. Askin, where he built a mansion named "Louella" after his daughters Louisa and Ella. His and surrounding land were bought in 1880 by banker A.J. Drexel and newspaper editor G.W. Childs, to form a larger development they called Wayne Estate. More homes and a hotel were then built. The Chanticleer Garden, Downtown Wayne Historic District and Wayne Hotel are all located on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is located 14 miles from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the Pennsylvania Railroad, and was named after General Anthony Wayne, a former mayor of the city. It has a population of 2,000. It is one of the smallest towns in the United States to have been named after a U.S. president, George W. Bush, and a former president of the Democratic National Committee, Ronald Reagan. It was named for General Wayne, who died in office in 1913. The city's name is derived from the Wayne River, which runs through the center of the town and was once a popular tourist destination. The Wayne River is a tributary of the Lackawanna River, and runs into the Delaware River, where the city of Philadelphia is located. In 1887, the city was known as Wayne, Pennsylvania.
