Morrisville (, locally: [mz-]) is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located just below the falls of the Delaware River opposite Trenton, New Jersey. The earliest known settlement in what is now Morrisville, was a trading post of the Dutch West India Company operating from 1624 to 1627. In its early days, the area was known as Crewcorne and was a part of Falls Township. In 1804, the first bridge built across the Delaware connected Morrisville to Trenton. The Gershom Craft House, Summerseat, and Trenton City/Calhoun Street Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Morrisville is also home to Graystones, the historic site marking William Penn's first Pennsylvania land purchase from the Lenni Lenape Indians. The borough has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km²), of which 1.8 sq miles (4.6 km²) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.5km²) (10.15%) is water. U.S. 1 traverses Morrisville and crosses into New Jersey via the TrentonMorrisvile Toll Bridge. In 2014, the borough was 58.5% Non-Hispanic White, 25.9% Black or African American, 2.4% Native American or Alaskan Native, 2.2% Asian, 4.4%. 16% of the population were of Hispanic or Latino ancestry.

History

Morrisville was once known as Crewcorne and was part of Falls Township. It was incorporated into a borough in 1804, taking the name of Morrisville. The first bridge built across the Delaware connected Morrisville to Trenton. The Gershom Craft House, Summerseat, and Trenton City/Calhoun Street Bridge are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Morrisville is also home to Graystones, the first building in the city to be named after a Native American. It is located on the banks of the Delaware River, just below the famous Falls of the Delaware, for which Falls Township was named. The town was once considered for the capital of the United States, but it is now the home of the University of Delaware, which was founded in 1776. The city's name is derived from the word Morris, which means "marsh" or "mound" in English, and "village" in Spanish. The name Morrisville means "town" in Latin, "morris" means "place" and "mansion" in the English language, "mourner" is a reference to the town's name, "Morris" is the name given to one of its earliest residents, William Morris, who founded the town in the 17th century. The current name of the town is Morrisville, and it is based on the word "murders" which refers to the deaths of several members of the Morrisville community during the First World War.

Geography

Morrisville is located at 40°1227N 74°4648W (40.207458, -74.779918). It is part of a geographical salient that is mostly surrounded by New Jersey. Its name is the default city name in the 19067 ZIP code, which covers an area that includes Yardley, Lower Makefield, Morrisville, and part of Falls Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.0 square miles (5.1 km²), of which 1.8 square miles. (4.6 km²) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.5km²) (10.15%) is water. U.S. 1 traverses Morrisville and crosses into New Jersey via the Trenton Morrisville Toll Bridge. There are several parks within Morrisville's borders, and the Delaware Canal State Park runs near the eastern border of both the town and Pennsylvania. Located between the Calhoun Street Bridge and the Lower Trenton Bridge (Trenton Makes) is Williamson Park, home to Morrisville Little League and many community events. Adjacent to Graystones is Graystones woods, a tract of woodland that extends from the Delaware canal to Crown Street in the town's far north. The Morrisville Riverfront Preserve, an 8.8-acre tract preserving some of the last bits of the Delaware River's tidal basin, is a two pen playground for dogs big and small.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,023 people, 4,154 households, and 2,612 families residing in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 75.98% White, 19.14% African American, 0.18% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 2.08% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 16.4% of the population were of Hispanic or Latino ancestry. The median income for a household in the Borough was $43,095, and the median income. for a family was $53,316. The per capita income for the borough is $21,404. About 8.9% of families and 10.0% of those under age 18 were below the poverty line, including 12.1% ofThose under age18 and 8.8% ofthose age 65 or over. The borough is located on the New York-Pennsylvania Turnpike. It is the only borough in New Jersey that is not part of the New Jersey Bay Area or the Hudson River Valley. It was the site of the U.S. Civil War and the Battle of the Bulge. It has a population of about 10,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Schenectady. The population of the Borough is about 7,000. In the borough, the average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.01. The average age is 36 years old.

Etymology

The borough is named for American Founding Father, Pennsylvania merchant, and banker Robert Morris. Morris was the main financier of the American Revolution. His home Summerseat still stands in town. The borough is also known as "The City of the Stars" and "The Village of the Star" for its red light district. It is located on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which was once part of the Delaware River. The town is now part of Pennsylvania's Luzerne County, where it is known as the "City of the STARs" The town's name is derived from the Star-Spangled Banner, which is a U.S. state. The city's name means "the place of the stars" or "the city of the star-spangled banner" in English, and "the town of the sun" in Spanish. It was named after Robert Morris, who was a merchant and banker in the area. He was also a member of the Continental Congress, and served in the Continental Army during the Revolution. He died in 1783. The name of the borough is now "The Borough of The Star- Spangled Banner," which means "The Town of The Stars, or the Town of the Sun-Spokesman for the Republic of Pennsylvania". The town also has the name "The borough of the Heart of Pennsylvania," which is "The Heart of the Republic," which was "the Heart of The Republic" in the 1770s and 1780s. The word "Star-Spark" means "star-spark" or the "Heart of the Union" and refers to the heart of Pennsylvania.

Sports

The Morrisville Little League baseball team defeated Merchantville, New Jersey to claim the Little League World Series title in 1955. It is one of four Pennsylvania teams to have won the tournament since its inception in 1947. The team is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.
