Forest Grove

The population was 21,083 at the 2010 census, an increase of 19.1% over the 2000 figure (17,708) The name Forest Grove was selected on January 10, 1851, at a meeting of the trustees of Tualatin Academy (later known as Pacific University). The name referred to a grove of oak trees that still stand on what is now the campus of the university. Pacific University has been the most distinctive aspect of the town throughout its history. Old College Hall on campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places along with nine other structures in the city. Forest Grove is located on the western edge of the Portland metropolitan area and the Willamette Valley. The Oregon Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion-218th Field Artillery Regiment is headquartered in Forest Grove. The city was platted in 1850, the first in Washington County, and was incorporated in 1872. In 1880, the now Chemawa Indian School opened in the town to forcibly assimilate Native American children, but moved to Salem in 1884. In November 1908, the Oregon Electric Railway (OE) began serving the city, and in January 1914, competitor Southern Pacific (SP) followed suit, opening its own line, separate from OE's. Both railroads provided freight and passenger service, being known as the Red Electric. The Red Electric passenger service to Forest Grove ended in 1929 and Oregon Electric's ceased in 1932. One of the largest Giant Sequoia trees of Oregon can be found in the state of Oregon.

History

Forest Grove is the primary city name, but also Glenwood are acceptable city names or spellings, Verboort on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Forest Grove, Oregon. The name Forest Grove was selected on January 10, 1851, at a meeting of the trustees of Tualatin Academy. The name referred to a grove of oak trees that still stand on what is now the campus of the university. In 1860, the population reached 430, but declined to 396 in 1870. In 1880, the now Chemawa Indian School opened in the city to forcibly assimilate Native American children, but moved to Salem in 1884. The city started the Fire Department in 1894. The population reached nearly 1,300 in 1900. The Oregon Army National Guard's 2nd Battalion-218th Field Artillery Regiment is headquartered in Forest Grove. In February 2016, a high-pitched, hissing noise called the Forest Grove Sound was heard by several residents of the town. There are 12 properties individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places and two historic districts: the 18-block Clark Historic District with homes dating as far back as 1854 (and several dozen pre-1900) and the Painter's Woods Historic District. The town is home to Pacific University, which was founded in 1851. It is also home to the Oregon & California Railroad, which opened its depot in 1908. The Red Electric passenger service to Forest Grove ended in 1929 and Oregon Electric's ceased in 1932. The City of Forest Grove is located in the eastern part of theascade region of Oregon, near the towns of Salem and Corvallis. It was the first city in the county to be incorporated.

Geography

The city is home to the Oregon State Museum, which has a collection of more than 2,000 pieces of art, including the Oregon National Museum of Natural History and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. It is also the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which runs through the end of the year in the town of Forest Grove, Oregon. The town has a population of about 2,500. It has an area of about 5.74 square miles, or 14.87 km², with 0.14 square miles of land and 0.36 km² of water. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city's population at 2,788. The area has an average monthly temperature of 72.6°F (24.7°C) and an average annual rainfall of 1,856.7 square miles (3,836.7 km²).

The racial makeup of the city was 78.8% White, 0.8%, African American, 1.1% Native American, 2.6% Asian and 0.3% Pacific Islander, 12.5% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.1%. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.31. The median income for a household in theCity was $40,135, and the median income. for a family was $47,733. About 10.4% of families and 14.3%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 11.4%. of those age 65 or over. The city is located on the U.S.-Mexico border. The U.N. has a consulate there. It has a population of 17,708, and a population density of 3,673.0 inhabitants per square mile (1,418.2/km²) The city's population is expected to grow to 21,000 by the end of the year. The population is predicted to reach 20,000 in the next few years. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, with a population growth rate of 7.7% in the past decade.

Education

The principal landmark of Forest Grove is Pacific University, a private school of higher education. Forest Grove, as well as Cornelius, Gales Creek, and Dilley, are all part of the Forest Grove School District. Pacific University is located in Forest Grove's historic downtown area. Public transportation

Forest Grove is within the TriMet district. TriMet's bus line 57-TV Highway/Forest Grove operates seven days a week. Yamhill County Transit Area (YCTA) bus line 33-Hillsboro/MAX also stops in Forest Grove weekdays. A free, non-profit bus service called "GroveLink" goes through the suburban areas of the city. The city is home to the Forest Grove High School football team, which won the state championship in 2010. The school's football team also won the Oregon State Championship in 2011. The football team finished second in the state in the 2010 Oregon State Football Championship game. The team lost to Oregon State University in the final game of the season, which was played in Portland. The game was the first time the team had ever played in the city, and the first since the city was founded in 1903. The victory was followed by a state championship for the football team in the following year's Oregon State Championships. The final game was won by Oregon State College of Science and Arts, which also played a role in the creation of the Portland Trailblazers. The win was the city's first in the Oregon Trailblazer Series, which began in the late 1950s and has since won three state championships. The town also won a state title in the 1971 Oregon State Fair, which took place in Beaverton, Beaverton and the town's suburb of Hillsboro. It was also the first city in the Portland region to win the state's "TriMet Award" for the best bus service.

In 1885, Forest Grove was sister city to Nambou, Japan; it is now sister city of Tokyo-Nagasaki, Japan and Tokyo-Sarasota, South Korea. It will also have sister city status with Tokyo-Yokosuka, Japan in the future. It may also be sister to Tokyo-Tokyo-Nambu in the 2030s, and may become sister to Nagasaki-Nigeria in the 2070s.

Film location

In the 1990s, filming for the television show, Nowhere Man, took place in Forest Grove. In 2015, an episode of The Librarians was filmed at Pacific University and two other sites. The city's historic Forest Theater hosted a free public screening of the episode at the same time it aired on TV. The episode was aired on the same night as the city's free movie screening of The Hobbit, which was also filmed in the city. The film was released on Blu-ray and DVD in October 2015.
