North Powder was platted in 1885 or 1886 along the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company rail line. David Eccles, a Mormon businessman, created the Hall Brothers Lumber Company in the town once the railway arrived. North Powder prospered because it had an icehouse that supplied the refrigerator cars of Pacific Fruit Express until the icehouse burned down in the 1930s. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.64 square miles (1.66 km²), all of it land. This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) according to the Köppen Climate Classification system. The city is located in Union County, Oregon, United States. The population was 439 at the 2010 census, with 209 housing units at an average density of 340.9 per square mile (132.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.32% White, 0.61% African American, 0.,41% Asian, 0,20% Pacific Islander, and 1.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.07% of the population. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.11. The median income for a family was $27,500 versus $19,500 for males and $11,000 for females.

History

North Powder was platted in 1885 or 1886 along the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company rail line. David Eccles, a Mormon businessman, created the Hall Brothers Lumber Company in the town once the railway arrived. North Powder prospered because it had an icehouse that supplied the refrigerator cars of Pacific Fruit Express until the icehouse burned down in the 1930s. The town was a stage stop before the rail line was built in the 1880s and 1890s. It is now a suburb of Portland, Oregon, in the U.S. state of Oregon. It was once known as North Powder, but has since changed its name to North Powder. It has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the 2010 Census. The city is located on the Oregon-Washington border and was once part of the Oregon and Washington State Railway Company, but is now owned by the Oregon Department of Rail and Transportation. It had a post office from 1885 to 1886, when it was taken over by a lumber company. It also was a stop on the Pacific Coast Railway, which later became the Oregon Railway and Navigation Co. in the 1920s and 1930s, when the line was extended to Oregon City, Oregon. The company's icehouse supplied refrigerator cars for the Pacific Northwest Fruit Express. The icehouse was destroyed by fire in 1930s and was replaced by a new icehouse, which was also used by the Pacific Fruit Express, which continued to serve the town until the 1970s.
