Lyons

Lyons is a city in Linn County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,161 at the 2010 census. The center of population of Oregon is located in Lyons. Some homes in the town were destroyed in the 2020 Santiam Fire. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Lyons has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps. This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) The city has a total area of 0.88 square miles (2.28 km²), of which 0.87 square miles of land is land and 0.01 sq miles (0.03 km²) is water. The city is located near the junction of the U.S. Turnpike and Oregon State Route 50. The town is located at the intersection of Oregon State Highway 50 and Oregon Highway 33. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located nearby. The site is open to the public and has been designated as a World Heritage site by the United Nations. It is also known as the "World Heritage Site of the Pacific Northwest" and the "Pacific Northwest National Park" The city's name is derived from the word "Lyons" which means "leaves" or "loaves" in French. The name is also used in the English language as "Lyon" and "Lions" The town's motto is "The City of Lyons".

History

Some homes in the town were destroyed in the 2020 Santiam Fire. The town is located on the banks of the Santiam River. It is located in the eastern part of the state, near the town of Bakersfield. It was founded in 1872 by the town's first inhabitants, who called it "Santiam" The town has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central area of the town. It has a history of being burned down in the past, including in the 1950s and 1960s. The Santiam fire was the deadliest fire in the state's history, destroying more than 1,000 homes and businesses. It also caused the death of many people in the area, including the mayor and two police officers. The fire also claimed the lives of at least two people in a nearby town, including a man and a woman who had lived there for more than 30 years. The  town's name means "sadness" or "sickness" in the local language, and the town is known as Santiam, which means "suffering" in English. It's also known as "the town of the ashes" or "the town where the ashes of the dead were found, because of the damage caused by the sickening fires in the 1960s and 1970s and early 1980s. It was named after a town in the nearby state, Santiam.

Lyons has an estimated population of 3,000. It is the only city in the state with more than 1 million residents. It has an average monthly temperature of 71.8°F (22.0°C) The city is located on the San Francisco River, which flows through the center of the town. It also has a small lake, which is used as a source of water for the city's water supply. The town's population is 1,200, with an average annual rainfall of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km) The town has a high school population of 1,100. It was founded in 1883. It had a population growth spurt in the mid-20th century, when it was founded as the town of Lyons. It now has a low-lying area of about 0.87 square miles, with 0.01 square miles of land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,161 people, 444 households, and 332 families living in the city. There were 475 housing units at an average density of 546.0 per square mile (210.8/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 91.4% White, 0.4%. African American, 1.5% Native American, and 1.1% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5%. The city's median income was $40,368, and the median income for a family was $45,875. About 9.3% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.1 percent of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over. The city is located on the U.S. Geological Survey's Mid-America Ranges. It is the only city in the state to be on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as one of the few cities in the United States with more than 1,000 residents. The U.N. Census Bureau recorded the city's population as 1,008 in 2000. It has a population density of 1,334.5 inhabitants per squaremile (515.3/km 2) The city has a median age of 44.7 years, with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.7%. of residents aged 18 to 24, 25.3%. from 25 to 44, 28.4. from 45 to 64, and 12.8%. who were 65 years of age or older.
