Central Point is a city in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. The population was 17,169 as of 2010. The city shares its southern border with Medford and is a part of the Medford metropolitan area. Five of the eight public schools of the Central Point School District are located in the city. Central Point has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22.0 °C) The city lies at an elevation of about 1,272 feet (388 m) along Oregon Highway 99 and Interstate 5 northwest of Medford. Jacksonville is to the south and Gold Hill to the northwest. The Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad passes through Central Point. The Bear Creek Greenway, a biking and hiking trail connecting Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Medford along Bear Creek, also passes through central Point. It is home to the Jackson County Fair that occurs in July. The town's name comes from Isaac Constant, a pioneer who settled here in 1852, and named the location Central Point because of its location at a crossroads in the middle of the Rogue Valley. In about 1870, Magruder Brothers opened a store at the crossroads. In 1872, a post office was established here under the name Central Point and the city's name was changed to Central Point in 1874. The U.S. Census Bureau says the city has a total area of 3.90 square miles (10.10 km²), all of it land.
History
Central Point is the primary city name, but also Medford are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Central Point, Oregon. Isaac Constant, a pioneer who settled here in 1852, named the location Central Point because of its location at a crossroads in the middle of the Rogue Valley. At this point, the main northsouth road from the Willamette Valley met the road between Jacksonville and settlements along the Rogue River. In about 1870, Magruder Brothers opened a store at the crossroads. In 1872, a post office was established here under the name Central Point.
Geography
Central Point is located at an elevation of about 1,272 feet (388 m) It is located on Oregon Highway 99 and Interstate 5 northwest of Medford. The Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad passes through Central Point. The Bear Creek Greenway, a hiking trail connecting Ashland, Talent, Phoenix and Medford, also passes through the town. The city has a total of 3.90 square miles (10.10 km²) of land, all of which is covered by the city of Central Point and its surrounding areas. It has a population of about 2,000. The town is located in the eastern part of the Oregon Coast Range, which is the highest point in the state. It is at the junction of Interstate 5 and Oregon State Highway 99, which runs to the north and south of the city, and to the east and west of the town of Gold Hill, to the south and east of it. It also has a number of small streams and rivers, including Bear Creek, a tributary of the Willamette River, which flows through the center of the village. It was named after the town's namesake, who was born in the area in 1858. The community is also known as "Central Point" because of its location on Oregon State Route 99, a road that runs through the heart of the community. It's located at the intersection of two major highways, the Oregon and Washington Turnpike, and the Oregon-Washington State Railroad, which goes through the city to the west.

The region is home to the Central Point Hospital, which was built in the early 1900s. The hospital was the first hospital in Central Point to be built. It is located in the town's central area and has a population of around 2,000. It also has a number of other hospitals, including Central Point Medical Center and Central Point Memorial Hospital.
