Sutherlin is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 7,810. The city is located at 43°2318N 123°1858W (43.388435, -123.316175). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.35 square miles (16.45 km²), of which, 6.15 sq miles (15.93 km²) is land and 0.20 sq miles ("0.52 km²") is water. Nearby features include Cooper Creek Reservoir, Ford's pond (treated waste water), the Umpqua River, a golf course, and numerous vineyards. Sutherlin has the typical western Oregon Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) characterized by dry summers featuring cool mornings and hot afternoons, and chilly, wet winters. The City of S Lutherlin Police Department also serves the City of Oakland via a paid contract. It is located off of I-5, and is the second most populous city inDouglas County. The population of the city in the 2000 census was 6,669, and in the 2010 census it was 8,810, making it the second-most populous town in the county. The median income for a household in the city was $29,068, and the median for a family was $34,414. The racial makeup of the town was 93.79% White, 0.13% African American, 1.72% Native American, 051% Asian, 006% Pacific Islander, 109% from other races, and 2.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the population.

Geography and climate

Sutherlin is located at 43°2318N 123°1858W (43.388435, -123.316175).According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.35 square miles (16.45 km²) of which, 6.15 square miles is land and 0.52 km² is water. Sutherlin has the typical western Oregon Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csb) characterized by dry summers featuring cool mornings and hot afternoons, and chilly, wet winters. The city is located in the Rogue River Valley, which runs through the center of the city. The town has a population of 1,816. It is located near the junction of the Willamette River and the Columbia River, which forms the city's eastern border. The river is a tributary of the Deschutes River, and flows through the city to the north and west. The U.N. World Heritage Site, the Oregon State Museum of Natural History, and the University of Oregon's Museum of History and Science are in the town. It has been named after S Lutherlin, an early settler of the region. It was named for S Luther, an 18th-century German-born woman who settled in the area in the 18th century. S Luther is a member of the Confederated Tribes of the Oregon Confederations of the United States, which have a long history of association with Oregon.
