Kingfisher came into existence on April 22, 1889, when land owned by the federal government was opened to settlement by "land run" The city is situated on a part of the Chisholm Trail, over which millions of Texas longhorns were driven to railheads in Kansas in the years immediately following the Civil War. The town was named for an early resident who several landmarks were named for, a man named King Fisher. Kingfisher has quickly become a suburban community of the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Statistical Area, already home to many commuters to Oklahoma City. In 2007, the city was 25% flooded when Kingfishers Creek and Uncle John Creek overflowed their banks, the result of heavy rain from Tropical Depression Erin. The city has a Certified City status and has received a Community Development Block Grant to inventory infrastructure features for Capital Improvement Planning (CIP) A present K.C.D.F. strategy includes the investment for development of the Kingf Fisher Industrial Park. The industrial park is located just south of Kingfischer, further closing the gap between Oklahoma City and Kingfished. The county seat of KingFisher County is Kingfishing, which is 42 miles (68 km) northwest of Oklahoma City, and is the former home and namesake of King fisher College. It is located at 35°5122N 97°5604W, and the U.S. Route 81 passes through the center of town, leading north 38 miles (61 km) to Enid and south 23 miles (37km) to El Reno.

History

The industrial park is located just south of Kingfishers, further closing the gap between Oklahoma City and Kingfischer. The Coleman Company was founded in Kingfished by W. C. Coleman in 1900. The company is now one of the largest private companies in the United States, with more than 20,000 employees. It is based in Oklahoma City, but also has offices in Texas, Texas, Arkansas, and New Mexico. It was founded by a group of Oklahoma businessmen in the early 1900s, and is still in operation today.

Geography

Kingfisher is located south-central Kingfisher County at 35°5122N 97°5604W. It is 42 miles (68 km) northwest of Oklahoma City. U.S. Route 81 (Main Street) passes through the center of town, leading north 38 miles (61 km) to Enid. Oklahoma State Highway 3 (Broadway Avenue) crosses US 81 in theCenter of town. The city is drained by Kingf Fisher Creek, a northeast-flowing tributary of the Cimarron River. According to the United States Census Bureau, Kingfishers has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.6 km²), of which 0.04 sq miles (0.1 km²) is water. It has a population of 1,071. The town is located in Kingfischer County, which includes the towns of Enid, Guthrie, Watonga, and El Reno, as well as the unincorporated community of El Reno. The county seat is El Reno and the county seat of Guthrie is on the Arkansas River, which flows through the city to the Mississippi River. It also has a post office with the ZIP code of 7053. It was founded in 1883. The first post office was opened in 1881. The last post office closed in 1894. The current post office has been in operation since 1891. It serves the town of KingFisher since 1894, when it was incorporated.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,633 people, 1,804 households, and 1,217 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 83.9% White, 1.6% African American, 3.8% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 6.9 % from other races, and 3.3% from two or more races.
