Arnett is a town in and the county seat of Ellis County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census, an 0.77 percent increase from 520 at the 2000 census. The town is located at 36°84N 99°4615W (36.134368, 99.770826) at an elevation of 2,447 feet (746 m) It lies approximately 9 miles (14 km) north-northeast of the Canadian River in the rolling Red Plains region of the Great Plains. Arnett has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The hottest temperature recorded in Arnett was 110 °F (43 °C) in 1951; the coldest temperature recorded was -12 °F (-24 °C), in 1959. The average yearly precipitation is 25.4 inches (644 mm) On average, January is the coolest month, July is the warmest month, and May is the wettest month. The county seat is 131 mi (211 km) west-northwest of Oklahoma City, 135 mi (217 km) northeast of Amarillo, and 172 mi (277 km) southwest of Wichita. It is located on U.S. Route 60 at the junction of U.S. Route 283, which runs roughly one-half mile east-west with Arnett through the town. It also runs concurrently east and west through Arnett in the town, through U.K. and Canada.
History
Arnett is the primary city name, but also Harmon are acceptable city names or spellings. The townsite came about at the junction of local trading routes. A post office was established at the townsite in 1902, with William G. Brown as the postmaster. After statehood in 1907, several county boundaries changed, and the southern part of old Day County was added to the southwestern part of Woodward County to become Ellis County. An election to locate the county seat was held in June of 1908, and resulted in a runoff between Arnett and Shattuck, Oklahoma. Arnett won and remains the county center today. The post office is said to have named the post office Arnett after A. S. Arnet, Brown's minister from Fayetteville, West Virginia. The town has a population of about 1,000 people, with the majority living in the town of Arnett. The county seat of Ellis County is Arnett, which is located in Ellis County, Oklahoma, about 60 miles south of Oklahoma City. The city's population is about 2,000. The community is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the center of the town. It is about 40 miles from Oklahoma City, the state's capital, and about 30 miles from the nearest major city, Oklahoma City or Oklahoma Springs. Education
Arnett Public Schools operates one school in the town. Arnett School (Grades Pre-K-12) is the only school in Arnett. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. The school serves students in pre-K to 12th grade. It is located in the north of the town, near the town's main road. It was founded in 1881. The first school was opened in 1883. The current school was built in 1891 and is located near the center of town. It opened its doors to students in 1894. It has been in the same location since 1894 and is still open to this day. It also has a high school, Arnett High School, for students in grades 11-12. It closed in the 1970s and reopened in the 1990s. It now has a sixth grade school. It's located in a nearby town, the town of Arnett, and has a school for pre-k-12 students in the 7th grade and up to the 12th year of high school. In 2010, it opened a seventh grade school for the 8th and 9th graders. It currently has a ninth grade school, the Arnett Preparatory School, which opened in the 9th grade, and a sixth grader school, which is in the 10th year. It will close in the 2012-13 school year for the 11th and 12th grades, and will reopen in the 2013-14 school year.
Transportation
U.S. Route 60 and SH-51 run concurrently eastwest through Arnett. Arnett is also the southern terminus of SH-46 which runs northsouth. The town is home to the Arnett Air Force Base, which was built in the 1930s. The Arnett Airport, which opened in the 1950s, is located in the town. The airport is one of the busiest in the state, with an average of 2,000 flights a day in 2010. It is also home to a number of military bases, including the Air Force Academy, the Air National Guard, and the Texas Air Force National Guard. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and is now the base of the Texas Army National Guard and Texas Army Air Force. The Air Force base is located near the town of Arnett, which has a population of about 1,000. It has a total of six military bases in the area, three of which are located in Arnett and the rest are located elsewhere in Texas and Oklahoma. It also has a military air base which was established in the 1940s and is known as the "Arnett Airport" It is located at the junction of two highways that run through the town: U.S.-60 and U.N. Route 283, which runs roughly one-half mile east of town and one-and-a-half miles east of the town's main road.
Historical Sites
The Ellis County Courthouse, built in 1912, is on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Ellis County, Oklahoma. A log cabin sits just south of the Courthouse lawn, variously known as the Historic Log Cabin of Arnett or the Ellis County Log Cabin. Grand, Oklahoma, is 14 miles south of Arnet and was voted the seat of old Day County in 1893; however, Day County was eliminated at Oklahoma statehood. The post office closed September 30, 1943, and only building footings remain today. It was used as a residence until 1939, and soon thereafter disassembled and put back together in Arnett for preservation. The remains of Grand are included on the national register of historic places in Oklahoma as Grand Town Site, as well as Ellis County's Ellis County Jail, which was built in 1881. The Ellis County Sheriff's Office, which dates back to 1881, is also included in the National register of historical places in the county. The sheriff's office is located in the town of Ellis, Oklahoma and was built on the site of the former Day County courthouse in 1893. It is now part of Ellis County and is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Sites and The National Register of Landmarks in Ellis County, Osage State, Oklahoma, and the National Reconstruction Site in Arnett, Oklahoma and on the National Register of Historic Places.

The southwest corner is known as the northwest corner. The northeast corner is called the northeast corner and the southeast corner are known for their deer. The southeast corner is also known for the deer, which can be seen in the area from miles away. The southeastern corner is home to the western half of the state's deer population. The northeastern corner is the eastern part of the State Game Management Area, and the southeastern portion of the National Game Management area. The northwestern corner is said to be home to some of the best deer in the state. The eastern corner is made up of the Ellis and Ellis County Game Management Areas, as well as the Paddledlesack and Cooper areas. The western corner is thought to be the most popular for deer hunting, with many deer and elk in the region. The northernmost part is the Fort Supply reservoir, which has a population of about 2,000. The southernmost part of this park is the Blackkettle National grassland, with a population around 1,500. The north-eastern portion of this area is known to be a popular destination for deer and other wild animals, such as elk and moose. The south-easterly portion is the northernmost point in the park.
