Barberton

Barberton was founded in 1891 by industrialist O.C. Barber. Barber built 35 structures for the Anna-Dean Farm, all in the French Renaissance Revival style. Barber intended the farm to be the basis of an agricultural college, but he did not complete its financing before his death. Barberton became known as the "Magic City" because of its rapid population growth during its formative industrial years, at a time of waves of immigration from eastern and southern Europe. During the 1980s Barberton suffered a precipitous economic decline due to restructuring in heavy industry and job losses, similar to much of the rest of the industrial American Midwest. In 1985, key business leaders created the Barberton Community Development Corporation, which today functions through the Board of Directors of 20 stakeholders and city members. With the creation of the Community Foundation in the late 1990s, it has facilitated the creation. of over 2000 jobs and in excess of $100 million in business expansion projects. The city's schools have also improved academic performance since the 1990s. The population was 26,550 at the 2010 census. Lying directly southwest of Akron, it is a suburb of the Akron metropolitan area. In the valley running parallel to the Tuscarawas River and the Ohio & Erie Canal, he oversaw the construction of factories, residential neighborhoods and a compact commercial downtown. The most significant of the remaining buildings is Barn No. 1, the former Dairy Barn, restored in 1985 and now the world headquarters of the Yoder Brothers Corporation, horticulturists. The mansion was demolished in 1965.

Barberton is the primary city name, but also Coventry Township, Coventry Twp, New Franklin, Norton are acceptable city names or spellings, Akron, Barb on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. It has facilitated the creation of over 2000 jobs, and in excess of $100 million in business expansion projects. The city's schools have also improved academic performance since the 1980s. The most significant of the remaining buildings is Barn No. 1, the former Dairy Barn, restored in 1985 and now the world headquarters of the Yoder Brothers Corporation, horticulturists. The building has castle tower-like silos, visible from much of the east side of the city. The Creamery has been restored as a residence for the same family since 1943 and served as the birthplace for the Apostolic Church of Barberton founded in 1950. In the late 1990s, the BCDC entered into a new level of investment. It invested a portion of the Foundation's assets in prime business projects in Barberton. It also invested in a part of the community's prime real estate assets, such as the Babcock & Wilcox Company. The foundation has since invested in the development of 25 new mini-industrial parks and 25 new construction projects.

Geography

Lake Anna, a glacial kettle lake, is a 1-acre (4,000 m2) natural spring lake that lies in the center of the original village of Barberton. Lake Anna is named for O. C. Barber's daughter Anna Laura Barber. According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 9.26 square miles (24.0 km²) of which 97.62% is land and 0.22 sq miles (0.57km²) (or 2.38%) is water. The city is located on the Ohio River, which runs through the city. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Little Ohio River which flows through the town. The river was once known as the "Ohio River" and was once the source of the Great Lakes. It is now the Ohio Turnpike, which crosses the city and connects to the Ohio and Ohio Rivers. The town is located in the Ohio Valley, which was once part of the U.S. state of Ohio. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Battle was fought between the Native Americans and the European settlers. The area is now home to the town's oldest community, Barberton, which dates back to the 17th century. The village was founded by O.C. Barber, who founded Barberton in 1805. The current town is named after him and his wife, Anna Laura.

Demographics

At the 2010 census there were 26,550 people in 11,054 households, including 6,880 families, in the city. There were 12,191 housing units at an average density of 1,348.6 per square mile (520.7/km²) The racial makup of the city was 90.8% White, 5.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, and 0.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.4%. The median household income was $32,178 and the median family income was$39,387. The per capita income for theCity was $17,764. About 11.5% of families and 13.3%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.3. of those under age 18 and 7.5%. of those age 65 or over. The median age was 39.8 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.5 males. For each 100 females aged 18 and over, there was 82.8 males. The gender makeup of the City was 47.9 per cent male and 52.1 per cent female. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was2.97. The age distribution was 24.8 per cent under the age of 18, 8.4 per cent from 18 to 24, 28.3per cent from 25 to 44, 21.2 per cent between 45 and 64, and 17.3 per cent 65 or older.
