Jamestown is a city in Stutsman County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 15,849 at the 2020 census, making it the ninth largest city in North Dakota. The city was founded in 1872 and named after Jamestown, Virginia. It is located at the confluence of the James River and Pipestem Creek. In the 2010 census, there were 15,427 people, 6,567 households, and 3,555 families residing in the city. In October 2016, the North Dakota Finance Agency projected that the city would lose 21% of its population by the next census. The Roman Catholic Diocese of JamestOWN is listed as a titular see of the Catholic Church. It was established in 1889 and is the bishop's seat of the Fargo-Carlton Diocese. The U.S. Army established Fort Seward, a small post garrisoned by three companies (about 120 men) of the Twentieth Infantry Regiment, on a bluff overlooking the James river. The fort only lasted five years, being decommissioned in 1877but the railroad remained, establishing a repair yard that was among the city's main industries until the 1960s. The origin of the name is most commonly associated with the 4 founders of Jamstown, Jame James and Toni Adams, who were a rare set of identical twins who helped found the town. In 1873, Stuts man County became the first official county within Dakota Territory with Jamesttown as the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.87 square miles (33.33 km²), of which 12.83 square miles of the city is land and 0.04 square miles.

History

Jamestown is the primary city name, but also Eldridge, Sydney are acceptable city names or spellings, Bloom, Fried, Homer, Jamestwn, Jmst, Lippert, Spiritwood Lake, Woodbury on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Jamestown, North Dakota. Jamestown was founded in 1872 and General Thomas Rosser of Northern Pacific named it after Jamestown, Virginia. The city incorporated in 1883. In 1873, Stutsman County became the first official county within Dakota Territory with JamestOWN as the county seat. On November 10, 1889, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jamesttown was established. April 6, 1897, saw a change of name to diocese of Fargo. Since 1995, the Diocese is listed as a titular see of the Catholic Church. The railroad remained, establishing a repair yard that was among the city's main industries until the 1960s. The fort only lasted five years, being decommissioned in 1877but the railroad remained in the city until the 1970s. Geography

Jamestown is located at the confluence of the James River and Pipestem Creek. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.87 square miles (33.33 km²) It has a typical northern prairie American climate. In the Köppen classification it is Dwb (humid continental climate). The city is home to the Jamestown Memorial Hospital, which was founded in 1858. The hospital was the first hospital in the state of North Carolina. The city's name is derived from the name of the town's founder, William J. "Bill" J. J. Smith, who was born in 1838. It is located on the banks of James River, which is a tributary of the Little Piney River. The James River flows through the city, and it is also the source of the Peculiar Creek. The town's name comes from the word "james", which means "river" or "creek" in English. It was named after James J. James, who is believed to have been the first settler in the area. It has been the site of the first recorded European settlement in 17th century. The current mayor of the city was William "William" J.'s father, who came to the area in 1851. The community is known for its large number of Native Americans, including many descendants of the Cherokee. It also has a large Native American population, which dates back to the early 1800s.

Jamestown has a strong precision manufacturing base as well as food processing, agriculture, retail and wholesale businesses. Notable companies headquartered in Jamestown include Sunward Steel/Wedgcor Steel Buildings, ACI (Agri-Cover, Inc.), Dura Tech Industries, and Midwestern Machine. Four designated industrial parks adjoin the city or are part of joint city/county development efforts: Bloom Business Park, I-94 Business Park and Spiritwood Energy Park. Service facilities for trucking and heavy equipment repair are also located in the city and St. Paul, North Dakota. The city is home to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is based in the town of JamestOWN. The town is also home to a number of non-profit organizations, such as the St. Peter's College of Business, which provides business and technical training to young people. The U.N. World Bank has a branch office in the community, which offers business and economic development assistance to the city, county, and state. It is also the home of the St Peter's University of North Dakota, which has a program that helps young people learn about the world around them. The University of St. Petersburg has a business program that provides business training for young people in the region. It also offers a program to help young people prepare for life after college by providing business training and mentoring. The St.Peter's University School of Business offers a certificate program in business and technology.

Arts and culture

Jamestown Reservoir, a series of three, interlocking, 12-mile-long artificial lakes formed by Jamestown Dam, is home to watersports and recreational fishing. The city is also home to two disc golf courses, an 18-hole recreational course in Klaus Park, and a 27-hole championship course on the island and surrounding land in the Reservoir. The City also features the World's Largest Buffalo, a 26-ft tall sculpture of an American bison, and the National Buffalo Museum. The Arts Center is a venue for visual arts performances, art workshops and classes, ceramics studio and a beautiful green space known as The Art Park. The University of JamestOWN holds basketball and baseball games in Jack Brown Stadium, one of North Dakota's historic baseball parks. The North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame is located in the city's Civic Center, which hosts concerts, basketball games, other large events, and other large sporting events. The Island Course was the site of the 8th Annual North Dakota Disc Golf Championships in 2007. It is also the home to a year-round exhibition gallery, community theater stage, and art workshop and class rooms. The Jamestville Arts Center (The Arts Center) is located at the heart of downtown Jamesttown, North Dakota, and has a gallery, theater stage and other facilities for visual and performing arts performances and classes. It also has a cermics studio, a community theater, and an art gallery.

Education

Jamestown Public Schools operates five elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and one alternative high school. Louis L'Amour Elementary School is named for the popular western writer who was born in Jamestown. There are also two private elementary schools; Saint John's Academy, a K6 Catholic school and Hillcrest School, a Seventh-day Adventist school. The Anne Carlsen Center (formerly known as the "Crippled Children's School") is one of the country's leading centers for treatment and education of severely handicapped children. The university was founded by the Presbyterian Church and is located on the north side of town. It is ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top tier of regional undergraduate institutions, and is also notable among religious colleges for having been a co-educational institution from its founding in 1883. The city is home to the University of JamestOWN, a private liberal arts college, which was founded in 1886. Its current enrollment is 908 students in 2021, and it is ranked No. 1 in the state for undergraduate education by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NAC Employers) The city also has a high school that is located near the site of historic Fort Seward. The high school is located in the town's downtown area and is known for its excellent academics and sports teams. The town is also home to a private elementary school, which is also known as Saint John’s Academy.
