Cornelius is a suburban town located along Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. It is a major suburb in the Charlotte metropolitan area. Potts Plantation in Cornelius was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The town is approximately located at 35°2844N 80°5304W (35.478954, 80.884532). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.1 square miles (31 km²), of which 11.8 square miles is land and 0.3 sq miles (0.78 km²) (3.20%) is water. Cornelius is one of three towns located north of Charlotte. Along with its sister towns Davidson and Huntersville, Cornelius serves as a suburb to Charlotte. The median household income in 2010 was $83,789. The citizens of Cornelius, NC, attend the Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools. William A. Hough High School opened in August 2010 and currently serves over 2,000 students. The library is located on Catawba Avenue just east of exit 28 on I-77. The school system has two elementary schools and two middle schools. It also has a private school, Grace Covenant Academy, and a private Christian school, New Beginnings Christian Academy. It has a branch of the Public Library of Charlotte and Meck Lenburg County. The public school system also has two private schools, JV Washam Elementary and Grace Covenant.

History

Potts Plantation in Cornelius was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It is one of the oldest plantations in the state, dating back to the 18th century. The plantation was built by the Potts family, who lived on the land until the mid-19th century, when they moved to Cornelius. The Plantation is now owned by the Cornelius Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes the preservation of historic buildings and land. It was named after Potts, a former owner of the plantation, in honor of his son, who died in a car accident in the early 1900s. The plantation is located on a site that was once part of Cornelius' historic district. The Cornelius Plantation was built in the late 19th century and is now part of the city's historic district, which was once called Pottsville. The Potts plantation was named for its founder, William Potts. It's located on the site of a former plantation, which dates to the early 1800s, when the area was still part of Missouri. It has since been restored to its original name, Potts Plantations, and is on a National Register of Historic Plantation and National Reservations site in Cornelius, Nebraska. It was listed on the N R  Register of Historical Places in 1998, and was added to the National Register of Historic Plants in 2000.

Cornelius is one of three towns in Mecklenburg County located north of Charlotte. Along with its sister towns Davidson and Huntersville, Cornelius serves as a suburb to Charlotte. The town is approximately located at 35°2844N 80°5304W (35.478954, 80.884532).According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.1 square miles (31 km²), of which 11.8 square miles is land and 0.3square miles (0.78 km²) (3.20%) is water. It is located along Lake Norman in northern Meckenburg County. The city of Cornelius was founded in 1836. The name Cornelius is derived from Cornelius, a town in North Carolina that was once part of the state of North Carolina. It was named after the Cornelius River, which runs through the center of the town. Cornelius has a population of 2,000. It has one of the highest percentages of African-American residents in the U.S., with 1.8% of its population being African-Americans. It also has the highest percentage of Hispanic residents, with 2.7% out of every 1,000 residents. The population of the city is 2,100. It had a population increase of 1.4% in the year 2000. The number of people living in Cornelius in 2010 was 2,788.

The racial makeup of the town was 91.65% White, 5.62% African American, 1.24% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.79% of the population. According to Claritas Market Statistics, the median household income in 2010 was $83,789. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was2.87. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.9 males. The town's population was 11,969 at the 2000 census, with 5,716 housing units at an average density of 676.0 per square mile (260.9/km²) The town has an estimated population of 31,000 as of the 2016 United States census. It has a population density of 1,415.5 people per squaremile (546.2/km 2) and a population growth rate of 1.7%. The town is located in the eastern part of the state, near the border with New Mexico and New Mexico. It is located on the New Mexico Turnpike, which runs into the state's eastern border. It was the site of a World War II-era battle between the United States and Germany.
