High Point is a city in the Piedmont Triad region of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census the city had a total population of 113,887 with an estimated population of 114,086 in 2021. High Point is North Carolina's only city that extends into four counties. The city's official slogan is "North Carolina's International City" due to the semi-annual High Point Furniture Market that attracts 100,000 exhibitors and buyers from around the world. It is home to High Point University, a private Methodist-affiliated institution founded in 1924, and High Point College, a liberal arts university with approximately 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students from 51 countries and 46 states. High point is located at 35°5814N 79°5951W and is bordered by Greensboro to the north, Jamestown to the northeast, and Archdale to the southeast. It also stands within two major watersheds: the YadkinPee Dee to the west and the Cape Fear to the east. Parts of the city rise above 1,000 feet (300 m), making it among the highest cities in North. Carolina's highest city is Asheville, which is at 1,200 feet (400 m) High Point has an area of 55.4 square miles (143.6 km²), of which 53.8 squaremile (139.3 km²) is land and 1.7 square mile (4.3km²), or 2.96%, is water.
History
High Point is the primary city name, but also Archdale are acceptable city names or spellings, Allen Jay on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. High Point was at the highest point of the 1856 North Carolina Railroad between Charlotte and Goldsboro. High Point College was founded in 1924 as a private Methodist-affiliated institution. The college later became a liberal arts university, now with approximately 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students from 51 countries and 46 states. The town was settled by Europeans, including English Quakers and German immigrants, before 1750, but was not incorporated until 1859. Before it became a major manufacturing center, the most important industries were tobacco, woodworking and textiles. The High Point furniture factory opened in 1889. It is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the U.S. Census Bureau's American Heritage Heritage List and the National Park Service's American Antiquities Heritage List. It was named a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and a National Transportation Heritage Site in 1978. It has been named a North Carolina State Historic Site in 1979. It also has been listed as a National Civil Rights Landmark since the 1970s and a U.N. State Heritage Site since the 1980s. The city is home to the North Carolina Museum of Art, which was established in 1881. The museum is located in the historic district of High Point, North Carolina, which is located on the eastern edge of the city. It opened in 1883. The University of North Carolina at High Point is located at the western end of the town, near the intersection of the Great Western and Great Western Plank Roads. The university is a private, liberal arts college.
Geography
High Point is located at 35°5814N 79°5951W. It is bordered by Greensboro to the north, Jamestown to the northeast, and Archdale to the southeast. The city limits of Trinity and Thomasville come within half a mile of High Point's city limits to the south and southwest, respectively. The hottest temperature on record for the area was 103 °F (39 °C) on August 18, 1988. In the winter of 1959/60 the city had just over 30 inches (76 cm) of snowfall, which stands as the most dating back to the start ofSnowfall record-keeping in 1928. In 1989, High Point sustained minor wind damage from Hurricane Hugo as it raced through the western Piedmont region of North Carolina after making landfall 5 hours away in Charleston, South Carolina. High Point was one of several communities affected by a 2010 tornado outbreak. The twister reached its most powerful EF3 classification as it crossed the northern suburbs of the city. It was the first tornado to make landfall in North Carolina since Hurricane Hugo made landfall in the state in 1989. The area has an area of 55.4 square miles (143.6 km²), of which 53.8 square miles is land and 1.7 square miles, or 2.96%, is water. Economy
High Point was an early center for the development of the furniture industry in the South. The High Point Market remains important to High Point's economy and the city's furniture industry. Its bi-annual trade show is the largest furniture and furnishings industry event in the world. High Point continues to be the prime U.S. location to purchase brand-name furniture at a substantial discount. The city has diversified its economy by becoming a center for distribution and logistics, customer service, banking, manufacturing, photography and pharmaceuticals. It is the site of the renowned High Point Furniture Market, held in April and October of each year. The town is located in the Piedmont region with access to vast hardwood forests in the central and western parts of the state. Its population grew from 14,302 to 36,745 as of the 1920s, with the population of High Point growing from $20 million to $30 million by the 1950s and 1960s. The first North Carolina furniture exposition was held in High Point in 1905. The event that became known as the High Point furniture Market was attended by 700 buyers and generated $2.25 million in sales. It grew into an internationally trade fair for home furnishings and furniture in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, High Point became the site for the world's largest furniture fair, with over 100 vendors and visitors from more than 100 countries. It was also the home of Hatteras Yachts, one of the largest yacht companies in the United States.
Transportation
High Point is located in the northwestern Piedmont region of North Carolina. Amtrak trains connect High Point with New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. The main service for public transportation in High Point is Hi tran, the local bus service. Interstate 85 runs through southern High Point, southeast of the original interstate roadway, which is now designated Business 85. The new Interstate 74 runs north and east of the city, referred locally as the "East Belt" freeway project, and was completed southeast to I-73/US 220 near Randleman in 2013. To the northwest, it extends to Interstate 40 in Winston-Salem, and is referred to locally as "The East Belt" High Point was the site of the World War II-era Battle of the Bulge, which was fought between the U.S. Army and the British Royal Navy in World War I. High Point has a population of about 3,000. The city is located on the eastern edge of the Piedmonter River, which runs through the northwestern part of the state. It is also the location of the North Carolina Highway System, which includes Interstate 74, Interstate 85, Interstate 70, Interstate 66, Interstate 40 and Interstate 85 Business. The town is also home to the National Museum of Natural History, which dates back to the 17th century. Education
The High Point public school system was founded in 1897 with the approval of a $10,000 bond. High Point College opened in 1924 (changed to High Point University in 1991) High Point Christian Academy (Baptist), High Point Friends School (Quaker), Immaculate Heart of Mary (Catholic) and Westchester Country Day School (nonsectarian) are found in High Point. Guilford Technical Community College maintains a High Point campus. John Wesley University (formerly John Laurel College) merged into Winston-Salem International University in 2018. Shaw University operates nine Shaw University "E" (Providence Bible College of High Point) program centers. The University of North Carolina at High Point is a four-year, coeducational, liberal arts university related to the United Methodist Church. It offers 50 majors in a traditional day format. It also offers non-traditional evening programs, and the graduate studies program offers 10 master's degrees and one doctorate degree. It is one of three public high schools in the city. The other two are High Point Central High School and T. Wingate Andrews High School, both of which were established in the 1960s. The city is the home of the North Carolina Diploma Diploma Program, offering degrees from the Diploma to Doctorate Degree in Diploma and Doctorate Degrees. It was also home of John Wesley College, formerly called John Laurel University, which merged into Piedmont International University (Winston-salem) in 2010.

Baldwin Museum: The museum was created in November 2000 to honor the legacy of Miss Rosetta B. Baldwin, her family and many African-Americans. Sechrest Gallery: Located on the campus of High Point University in the Hayworth Fine Arts Center, the gallery houses permanent collections of 18th and 19th century British Art coupled with rotating exhibitions. World's Largest Chest of Drawers: Built in 1926, the World'sLargest Bureau is an example of automobile-oriented pop architecture and has been featured on numerous broadcasts such as MTV and The Travel Channel. High Point Community Theatre: Founded in 1976, the theatre presents American musicals, dramas and comedies performed by local actors. The theatre also has an education program, featuring classes, workshops and camps for adults, youth and children. The High Point Rockers are a baseball team playing in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball in High Point. The city is home to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, which houses the world's largest collection of books on the history of furniture and interior design. The museum also houses a collection of artifacts from typical colonial Quaker homesteads.
