Siler City is a town in western Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town's population was 7,702. In recent years, Siler City has become a suburb of Greensboro and the Research Triangle Park. Since 1997, it has developed as a center of industrial-scale poultry processing, and attracted numerous immigrants and Latinos for the jobs. In three years, the majority-Latino soccer team of the high school qualified for the state championship, creating a new fan base. The population has increased by 75% from 1990 to the 2016 estimate, as workers have been attracted to new jobs in the poultry processing industry. The town is located at 35°4334N 79°2747W (35.726030, -79.462962). U.S. Route 64 passes through the northern part of the town as 11th Street, leading east 16 miles (26 km) to Pittsboro and west 21 miles (34km) to Asheboro. US 421 leads northwest 32 miles (51 km) towards Greensboro, and southeast 24 miles (39 km) toward Sanford. Loves Creek, a tributary to the Rocky River is the main watershed that drains Siler city. According to the United States Census Bureau, theTown has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.6 km²), of which 0.02 square miles. (0.06 km²) is water.

History

Siler City began when Plikard Dederic Siler and his wife, Elizabeth Hartsoe Siler, settled about four miles north of the town's current location. In recent years, Siler City has become a suburb of Greensboro and the Research Triangle Park. Since 1997, it has developed as a center of industrial-scale poultry processing, and attracted numerous immigrants and Latinos for the jobs. In three years, the majority-Latino soccer team of the high school qualified for the state championship, creating a new fan base. The Bowen-Jordan Farm, Cadmus N. Bray House, Bray-Paschal House, East Raleigh Street Historic District, Gregson-Hadley House, and Hotel Hadley are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town is located near Lacy's Creek (the location near today'sSiler City) and is located on the North Carolina Turnpike, which runs through the town. It has a population of about 2,000, with most of its residents coming from outside of North Carolina. It is home to a number of historic buildings, including the Siler-Siler House, which dates back to the 18th century. It also has a city hall, which was built in the early 20th century, and a city center, which opened in the mid-20th century and is still in use today. The city has a high school, which is located in the center of the city. The high school has a soccer team, which has become known for its success.

US 421 bypasses Siler City to the northeast, with access from Exits 168, 171, and 174. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.6 km²), of which 0.02 square miles is water. Loves Creek, a tributary to the Rocky River, is the main watershed that drains Siler city. The town is located at 35.4334 N 79.2747 W, with an average daily rainfall of 2.7 inches (6.4 mm) and an average annual rainfall of 1.2 inches (4.2 m) The town has an estimated population of 1,816. It is located near the junction of U.N. Highway 64 and US 421, which leads northwest 32 miles (51 km), to Greensboro and southeast 24 miles (39 km) To the northeast is US 421 which leads to Sanford and the town's main airport, Sanford International Airport, which has an elevation of 2,838 feet (738 m).

Demographics

As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 7,702 people, 2,735 households, and 1,773 families residing in the town. The population has increased by 75% from 1990 to the 2016 estimate, as workers have been attracted to new jobs in the poultry processing industry. Hispanic or Latino of any ethnicity comprised 49.8% of the town's population. For the period 200913, the estimated median annual income for a household in theTown was $30,676, and the median income. for a family was $34,838. The per capita income for the town was $14,234. About 15.5% of families and 22.2% of. the population were below the poverty line, including 34.4% of those under age 18 and 7.9% ofThose age 65 or over. The town has a population of 7,887, with 2,890 housing units (2,603 of which were occupied) at an average density of 186.0/km² (481.7/mi2). The racial makeup of the Town was 44.0% White, 19.1% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.4%. Asian, 0,2% Pacific Islander, 31.1%. The town's median age was 31. 1 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For each 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.5. males.

Government and infrastructure

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety operates the Chatham Youth Development Center juvenile correctional facility. The facility, which opened in 2008, serves both boys and girls. It is located in the Central Carolina Business Park in Siler City, North Carolina.

Education

Siler City is part of the Chatham County Public Schools District. Jordan-Matthews High School, SAGE Academy, Chatham Middle School, and Virginia Cross Elementary School serve the town. Chatham Charter High School is also located in Siler City, as well as Chatham charter School. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. Siler City was featured in episode 140 (season 5, episode 13) of The Andy Griffith Show. The town was the setting for Paul Cuadros' book, A Home on the Field: How One Championship Soccer Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America (2006) The town is only a 25-minute drive from Mayberry. The city was featured again in episode 143 of the Andy Griffith show (11 January 1965) as the home of Sheriff Jackson, who visits Andy to see how Mayberry does traffic safety, and once more (January 1, 1968) in a cooking show on the local tv station. In this episode, Andy described the city as only a25-minute driving distance from the town of Mayberry, and described it as a small town in the middle of a big city. It is located on the banks of the Little River, which runs through the center of the town. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with the majority of its residents living in the central part of the city. In the town, there is a large Hispanic population, with most of the population living in and around the downtown area. It also has a large percentage of African-American residents, with many of the residents living near the city's outskirts.
