Mebane is a city in Alamance County, North Carolina, and partly in Orange County. It is named after Brigadier General Alexander Mebane, an officer during the American Revolution who later served as a U.S. Congressman. The city is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in North Carolina. The population as of the 2020 census was 17,768. The majority of the phone numbers for the city are in the 919/4 area code, whereas the rest of Alamance is situated in the 336/743 area code. The bulk of the city is in Alamances County, which comprises the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area, itself a component of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point Combined Statistical Area. In October 2014, the city council voted to adopt a new seal and slogan, replacing "A progressive community, the perfect place to call home" with "Positively Charming" The city has a total area of 8.5 square miles (21.9 km²), of which 8.3 square miles of land and 0.12 sq miles (0.3 km²) of water. It straddles the Research Triangle and Piedmont Triad Regions of North Carolina and is located at 36°545N 79°1615W (36.095957, -79.270861) The city was incorporated as Mebansville in 1880. Its name was changed to Mebanesville three years later.

History

The town was incorporated as Mebansville in 1880. It is named after Brigadier General Alexander Mebane, an officer during the American Revolution. The city council voted to adopt a new seal and slogan, replacing "A progressive community, the perfect place to call home" with "Positively Charming" The North Carolina Department of Transportation has long had plans to reroute North Carolina Highway 119, currently running through the city's downtown, to a new alignment further west. Although a four-year moratorium on the project was established in 1999, the Federal Highway Administration eventually granted approval in December 2009. The Charles F. and Howard Cates Farm, William Cook House, Cooper School, Cross Roads Presbyterian Church and Cemetery and Stainback Store, Durham Hosiery Mill No. 15, Griffis-Patton House, Thomas Guy House, Hawfields Presbyterian Church, and Woodlawn School are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In October 2014, the city Council voted to adopted a new Seal and slogan, replacing "a progressive community" with "Positivefully Charming". The city is located on the banks of the Yadkin River, which runs through the center of the city. It has a population of about 2,000. The town is located in the eastern part of North Carolina, near the border with South Carolina, and the state's southern tip. It was the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 1864. In the early 1900s, the town was known as "The Birthplace of the Carolinas" because of its fertile soil.

Geography

Mebane is located at 36°545N 79°1615W (36.095957, -79.270861). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.5 square miles (21.9 km²) of which 8.3 square miles are land and 0.12 sq miles (0.3 km²), or 1.36%, is water. Mebane was the site of the first recorded African-American settlement in the United States. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico, which is a major shipping route for the Gulf Coast region of North America. The town is located in the state of New Mexico, and has a population of 1.2 million. It is the only city in New Mexico that has been declared a state park by the state legislature, and the first state to do so in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was named after the town's founder, who was born in the town in the area. The name "Mebanes" means "mounds" or "mountains" in the local language. It also means "mountainous" in French and "mebane" in Spanish. It has a history of being a center for African- American settlement, particularly in the 19th century and early 20th century, when it was known as the "City of the Saints" and as "The City of the Rising Sun" by the Spanish.

The city has a population of 11,393 as of the census of 2010. The city's population is expected to reach 17,000 by the 2020 United States census. It is the largest city in the state of New Mexico, with an estimated population of 10,000. The state's population was 11,000 as of 2010, with a population growth rate of 1.7%. There is one private school, Bradford Academy, a classical Christian school started in 2008. Alamance Community College is a two-year college in Graham, 6 miles (10 km) west of Mebanes. The Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS) was created by a merger between the Alamances County School System and the Burlington City School System in 1996. The Orange County portion of the system is served by Orange County Schools. Mebans in Orange County are zoned to Efland Cheeks Elementary School, Gravely Hill Middle School and Orange High School. They are also zoned for Cedar Ridge High School and GravelyHill Middle School in Orange. The school system was formed by the merger of the Alamance - Burlington School System with Burlington City Schools in 1996, and the two systems were merged again in 1998. The BSS system is now called Alamance/Burlington/Alamance School System. It is the largest school system in the state, with more than 2,000 students. The system is based in Burlington, NC, and covers all of North Carolina's counties.

Downtown Mebane is home to many high-end home furnishing stores, antique shops, and trendy clothing stores. The downtown area also boasts several antique and curio shops, also with a local flair. Coffee shops are populated by many residents and attract many young professionals and students. A Tanger Outlet mall is located on Arrowhead Boulevard on the north side of I-85 in Mebanes. Garrett Crossing, a shopping center located on the south side of Mebene next to Interstate 85 and Interstate 40, includes a Wal-Mart Supercenter as well as dining and other smaller shops. The town was named a Top Five Great Place in North Carolina for 2017 by the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce. It is located near the intersection of Interstate 85, Interstate 40 and Highway 70.
