Elmsford is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Elmsford was 4,664. The area was known from colonial times as "Storm's Bridge" and later, "Hall's Corners" In 1870, the growing village was officially renamed "Elmford" in honor of a local landmark, a giant elm tree. The village was once served by the New. York and Putnam Railroad. Passenger service ceased in 1958, and freight service ended in 1975. The closest Metro-North Railroad stations are Tarrytown (on the Hudson Line) to the west and White Plains (on. the Harlem Line) to the east. The Elms Ford Reformed Church and Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The town has had an animal shelter for small children since the 1930s, but moved to a new location in 1995. In 1995, the Central Westchester Humane Society moved its shelter to a gated park on South Sprinkler Lane. The park has softball, basketball, tennis, as well as a giddie park for "kiddie" kiddies. In 1996, Carol Nichols Park was established, which was established in 1929 and was dedicated to the same name as Carol Nichols, the town's first female mayor. The current mayor is Robert Williams, who has been in office since 2007.

History

Elmsford was largely farmland throughout its early history. The construction of railroads in the late 19th century brought new prominence to the area. In 1910 it was incorporated as a village. A longstanding legend holds that Elmsford is the birthplace of the term "cocktail" and was named in honor of a giant elm tree. The village was once home to the New York and Putnam Railroad station, with train service beginning in the 1870s. Commuter rail service ended in 1958, and freight service end in 1975. The train station building is now a restaurant. The church and cemetery were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The railroad bed is now the South County Trailway and North County Trailways. The town is located on the Delaware River, which once had significant tributaries flowing through the village. It is also on the New Jersey Turnpike, which used to be known as the Delaware and New Haven Railroad. It was once known as "Storm's Bridge" and later, "Hall's Corners", names derived from the principal landowners of the times. In 1870, the growing village was officially renamed "Elmford" in honor. of a local landmark, a giant Elm tree (since deceased). The names Elmford and Storm's Bridge are reminders of the nearby Saw Mill River. The Elm Tree is a popular tourist attraction in the town, with many of its members living in the nearby town of Doylestown.

Geography

Elmsford is located at 41°314N 73°4857W (41.053963, -73.815711) in Westchester County, NY. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²), all land. The village is located on the East River, which runs through the center of the town. Elmsford has a population of 1,816. The town is located in the town of Westchester, New York. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the village's population at 1,716. It is the largest town in the state of New York, with a total population of 2,715. The city's population is 1,917. The county seat is Chappaqua, and the town is in the Town of Chappaquoit, Westchester. It has an area of 2.8 square miles, or 1.9 square kilometers, all of which is land. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The Battle was fought from 1864 to 1875. The site is also known as the birthplace of the American Civil War, which began in 1864. It's located on a river that flows through the town, and was named after the town's founder, William E. "Bill" Elms. The first post office opened in 1881.

Fire Department

The Village of Elmsford is protected by an all-volunteer fire department. Emergency Medical Services are provided by the village and the Town of Greenburgh EMS. The village has two fire companies, each with their own firehouses. The town also has an ALS-paramedic service, which is provided when requested by the town. The Village has three fire stations, one of which has a quint and a tower ladder. The fire department has two engines, one quint and one tower ladder, as well as two volunteer fire companies. It also has two ambulance companies, one for BLS services and one for ALS-Paramedic services. It has a fire station with two firehouses, one with a quint, and one firehouse with a tower. The station also has a station with a ladder, which can be used to reach the top of the tower, and a quint that can reach the bottom of the ladder. It is the only fire station in the village to have two fire engines, and the only one to have a quint. The Town ofGreenburgh EMS provides ALS services, and also provides ALS- Paramedic care when requested, and has a paramedic unit that is based in Greenburgh.

Police Department

The Elmsford Police Department was created with the incorporation of the village in 1910. It is located in the same building as Village Hall, and provides round the clock police protection to the village. It currently employs 22 sworn personnel. The department was created to provide police protection for the village when it was incorporated in 1910, and has been in existence ever since. It was created as a result of a request from the residents of the town to have a police department of their own. The village was incorporated as a town in 1910 and the police department was established in 1913. The police department is currently based in the building that is currently used as the Village Hall. The river is also a source of drinking water, as it runs along the village's eastern edge. The water supply is owned by the city of Newburgh, which also has its own water treatment plant, which was built in the 19th century. The town is also home to the Newburgh Medical Center, which dates back to the 18th century, and was once the site of the town's first hospital. In 1995 the shelter, Central Westchester Humane Society, moved to a location on Warehouse Lane South. The shelter was replaced by Pets Alive Westchester, and later Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, the current owner. In 1996, Carol Nichols Park has facilities for softball, basketball, tennis as well as a gated "kiddie park" and Sprinkler Park (attendant) for small children. It is home to a large Local 456 of the Teamsters union. The Village is convenient to White Plains, Yonkers, New York City, and Connecticut, the village is a significant center of commercial traffic and distribution. It also has a number of public schools, including Dixson Primary, Alice E. Grady Elementary and Alexander Hamilton Junior/Senior High School. The North County Trailway and South Country Trailway bicycle paths terminate there.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,664 people, 1,618 households, and 1,101 families residing in the village. Males make up 50.9% of the population while women make up 49.1%.
