History

Riverhead is the primary city name, but also Flanders are acceptable city names or spellings, Northampton on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Town of Riverhead. European colonists purchased the "Southold land" from the local Algonquian-speaking Native Americans and Shinnecock Indian Nation in 1649. An additional portion was purchased from Col. William Smith and divided among settlers in 1742. The New York State Legislature divided it from the town of Southold, New York, which lies to the north and east. Riverhead was named the county seat of Suffolk County (called a "county town" at the time), and its name was later combined as Riverhead. By 1902, its approximate population was 2,500. The town's first town meeting was scheduled to be held April 3, 1792. It was named after the Riverhead River, which was a tributary of the East River. It is located on Long Island's East River, north of New York City, and east of the New York Turnpike. It has a population of about 2,000 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The city's name is derived from the River Head River, a stream that once ran through the center of the town, and is now part of the Town of Riverhead, which is located to the south of the city. The name Riverhead comes from the word "river," which means "head" or "headwaters" in English, and means "river" in French. It also means "town of the same name" in Italian, "Riverhead" and "riverhead".
