Mattituck

Mattituck is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 4,219 at the 2010 census. It is believed to have derived its name from the Algonquian name for "Great Creek" Mattituck hosts an annual Strawberry Festival and is located in the heart of over 30 vineyards in the Long Island Wine Region. The community has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.2 km²), of which 9.0 sq miles (23.3 km²) is land and 0.35 sq mi (0.9 km²): 3.88% of the community is water. The town of Southold was established by Charter to the New Haven Colony of Connecticut in 1658. The area was occupied by British troops during the Revolutionary War and Governor Tryon visited. The name of the CDP is the Tutchogue Union Free School District, which is attended by residents of Cutchogue and Tuckers' sports teams, the Silone Silone and the Laurel Silone. The hamlet is located on Long Island Sound on the north side of Long Island on the Sound east of Port Jefferson. It has one of two harbors (the other being Mt. Sinai harbor) on the North Fork of the Peconic Bay. The inlet and James Creek come within 500 yards (460 m) of each other and would provide a shortcut between the PEConic and Sound if connected via a canal. However, authorities have resisted the connection.

History

It hosts an annual Strawberry Festival and is located in the heart of over 30 vineyards in the Long Island Wine Region. The festival is usually held on Father's Day weekend every year. It is believed to have derived its name from the Algonquian name for "Great Creek" The town was occupied by British troops during the Revolutionary War and Governor Tryon visited during the war. It was also used as a military base by the U.S. Navy during the Second World War and the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. It has been the site of a number of naval battles, including the battle of Stony Point in 1945 and the Second Battle of New York Harbor in 1967. It also hosts a popular tourist attraction, the New York Maritime Museum, which is open to the public on the weekends of June 1 and June 2. It's also home to the Long island Wine Festival, which takes place every year on the weekend of June 2 and July 1.

It is the only community in the state to have a post office, which opened in 1881. It was the first post office to open in New Mexico, and the first in the United States to open its doors in 1883. The post office closed in 1884. It reopened in 1891. It closed in 1901. It opened again in 1894. It now has a ZIP code of 7051. It also has a city address, which is listed as the town's ZIP code on the census-designated area map. The city's population is 1,091. it was founded in 1873. It had a population 1,061 in 1885. It became a U.N. post office in 1892. It still has a post station, which was opened in 1896. It currently has a police station and a school, which it opened in 1897. It's the only post station in the town.

There were 2,313 housing units at an average density of 267.6 per sq mi (103.4/km 2) The racial makeup of the hamlet was 96.62% White, 1.17% African American, 0.02% Native American,0.52% Asian, 0,64% from other races, and1.02%. The Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.55% of the population. Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District is attended by residents of Mattitucks, Cutchogue and Laurel. The sports teams' name is the Tuckers. The median income for a household in the hamlets was $55,353, and the median income. for a family was $63,370. The per capita income was $26,101. About 4.5% of families and 5.6% of people were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 9.6%. The CDP is home to the Long Island Rail Road, which runs through the community. The train station was built in the early 1900s. It is located on the New York State Thruway and is one of the oldest in the United States.
