East Hampton

The Town of East Hampton is located in southeastern Suffolk County, New York, at the eastern end of the South Shore of Long Island. At the time of the 2020 United States census, it had a total population of 28,385. The town consists of 70 square miles (180 km²) and stretches nearly 25 miles (40 km), from Wainscott in the west to Montauk Point in the east. It is approximately six miles (10 km) wide at its widest point and less than one mile at its narrowest. East Hampton has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) which predominates in most of the coastal Mid-Atlantic states. It has chilly, wet winters and very warm, dry summers due to the moderating influence of the ocean which suppresses thunderstorm development and moderates summer temperatures. The area had been inhabited for thousands of years by wandering tribes of indigenous peoples. In the late-17th century Chief Wyandanch of the MontauKett negotiated with English colonists for the land in the East Hampton area. The differing concepts held by theMontaukett and English about land and its use contributed to the Mont Kaukett losing most of their lands over the ensuing centuries. After the American Revolution, some Indians had no immunity with Shinnecock disease, which led some English and Dutch colonists to relocate to other parts of New York state. One of the largest privately owned islands in the U.S. is Gardiners Island, which is one of the biggest in the world.

Climate

East Hampton has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) which predominates in most of the coastal Mid-Atlantic states. East Hampton has chilly, wet winters and very warm, dry summers due to the moderating influence of the ocean which suppresses thunderstorm development and moderates summer temperatures. The winters are often stormy due to coastal storms which bring rain (but little snow) to the region, which averages only about 10 inches or 0.25 metres of snow annually. The summers are very warm and sunny, whereas the winters are very cold and rainy. The town has a population of about 2,000, with about 1,000 of them living in East Hampton. The city is located on the East Coast of the United States. It is located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of New Hampshire, and is located near the New Jersey Turnpike and the New York State border. It has a high school population of around 1,500. The state has a low unemployment rate of about 1%. The town is home to the East Hampton High School, which was founded in 1881. The school has a junior high and senior high school, which opened in 1883. It was the first high school in the state to open in 1884. The high school was the second high school to open, after the Hampton Roads High School in 1887. The college has a senior high and junior high school that opened in 1888. It also has a middle school that opens in 1891. The village has a post-secondary school that was established in 1894.

History

East Hampton was home to the Pequot people, part of the culture that also occupied territory on the northern side of Long Island Sound. Many of the Montaukett died during the 17th and 18th centuries from epidemics of smallpox, a Eurasian disease carried by some English and Dutch colonists. After the American Revolution, some MontauKett relocated with Shinnecock to Oneida County in western upstate New York, led by the Mohegan missionary Samson Occom. They formed the Brothertown Indians with other Indians from New England, and gave up some of their traditions. Since the 1990s, the Mont Kaukett have pressed for formal recognition as a tribe. The Shin Kaukot have claimed a portion of land on the South Shore as their reservation, and have received federal recognition in 2010 and state recognition in 2011. The park was formerly called Montauki County Park, and is visible from Theodore Roosevelt Park in New York City. It was the first English settlement in the state of New York. In 1639 Lion Gardiner purchased land known as what became known as Montauket Island, from the British royal family. In 4848 a royal charter was granted to the Mont Paukett people, a royal people of British descent, to live on Long Island. In the 1650s a British royal charter recognized the Montaurt people as a Royal people of English descent, and they were recognized as a royal tribe in 1648. In 1848 a British Royal Charter was issued to theMontaut people, and in 1879 a state charter was issued.

Government

The Town Board was stablished by the State of New York in 1788. The government operates from a 13-acre (53,000 m2) campus on Pantigo Road. The Trustees derive their power from the Dongan Patent of December 9, 1686, which set up self-governance for the town. Since the mid-1990s, a Starbucks franchise site has opened (currently there is only one in the whole town) and a branch of Tiffany & Co. closed its store in 2014. In 2006 it was announced that the new Town complex was to be designed by internationally known architect Robert A.M. Stern (who designed the East Hampton Library in 1997) The Town adopted a dark skies ordinance, which is now being considered as a model for wider use in New York State to cut down on light pollution at night. Despite East Hampton's great wealth, its fire department and ambulance are both volunteer services, dependent on local full-time residents. In August 1998, President Bill Clinton was to give his weekend radio address from the Amagansett Volunteer Fire Station during his vacation. The Town has aggressively pursued zoning ordinances to protect its residential and rural character. It has no chain fast food restaurants and or big box stores (unlike Southampton, which has numerous fast food chains and stores such as K-Mart). The village of East Hampton formerly also exercised a "no chain" rule. The East Hampton Town Police Department, commonly referred to as EHTPD, is a professional police organization responsible for primary jurisdictional law enforcement.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 21,457 people and 21,038 households residing in East Hampton. The racial makeup of the town was 84.81% White, 26.38% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 3.36% Black or African American, 1.32% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.33% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.07. The town's economy was based on retail and services to support the residential community. More than half the houses were owned as second homes (among the owners were some of the wealthiest people in the country) The median income for a household in the town in the 2000s was $52,201. The per capita income for the CDP was $25,725. Out of the total population, 20.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.2%. of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. In the town the population was spread out, with 19.9% under the Age of 18, 2.2% from 18 to 20, 5.1% from 20 to 24, 11.3% from 25 to 34, 21.5%. from 35 to 49, 22.5. from 50 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, therewere 101.5 males. Males had a median income of $38,566.

Special events

The fireworks display at Main Beach has been postponed three times since 2005. The shark fishing tournaments in Montauk have been controversial. The Artists and Writers Softball Game is held each summer. Every October the town hosts the Hamptons International Film Festival. The Food Network original show Barefoot Contessa is shot in East Hampton. The town is also home to the New York City Film Festival, which has a large New York crowd. It is also the home of the annual New York Mets baseball game, which is played in the middle of the summer. It has been played by John Irving, Norman Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, Dustin Hoffman, President Bill Clinton, and singer Paul Simon. It also hosts the annual American Music Awards, held in the town's ball park, on the last Saturday in August. The event is open to the public and is free to the general public, but tickets are required for entry. The festival is held in several local theaters, including the East Hampton Film Center, which also has a screening of the film The Godfather, starring Tom Hanks, and The Rock, which was shot in New York and New Jersey. It runs from August 26 to September 2. It's free to attend, but there is a $5 admission fee for non-residents, and it is open only to locals.

Communities and locations

The town of East Hampton has two locations using terms that are usually used by residents of the town: East Hampton North and West Harbor. The town also has two state parks: Amsterdam Beach State Park and Camp Hero State Park. It also has Hamlets: Montauk, Napeague, Springs, Wainscott, and West Point. The Town of Southampton has two U.S. Census-designated places: Sag Harbor and East Hampton. It has a harbor, which is also known locally as "Northwest Harbor" and "Freetown," as it was founded in the 19th century by free people of color, including some ofMontaukett descent. It is also home to a golf course, Sag Harbor State Golf Course, and a state park, Camp Hero, and Montauks Point State Park, as well as a county park, theodore Roosevelt County Park, and the Town of Roosevelt Park. In addition to the above, the town has two places that are used in the United States Census: West Point and Sag Harbor, which are also known as "East Hampton Harbor" The town has a town hall, the East Hampton Town Hall, and two town parks, the West Hampton Town Park and the West Point Town Park, all of which are used by the town's residents. The village has a school, East Hampton High School, which was established in 1876. The school is located in the town of West Hampton and was named after East Hampton, New York. It was the first school in the state.

Education

East Hampton High School is the principal school for the entire town outside of Sag Harbor. Pierson Middle-High School is physically in East Hampton and serves Sag Harbor (which is partially within the town of Southampton) The largest private school on the East End, the Ross School educates students from pre-school through 12th grade. American educator Catharine Beecher was born in East Hamptons. The town does not have any colleges. The now disbanded Clinton Academy on Main Street was the first chartered Academy authorized by the New York State Board of Regents in 1784. The Town of East Hampton is home to the East Hampton School District. The school district is part of the Sag Harbor Union Free School District, which also serves the Town of Southampton. There were 535 enrolled students in grades 6-12 for the 2019-2020 school year. Its mascot is the Whalers, which derives its name from Accabonac Harbor in the nearby Springs. The School District is also home to East Hampton Elementary School, which educates grades 1-8. The High School District serves grades 9-12, with a mascot of the Bonackers. The high school district also serves Southampton, which is partially in the town. There are 920 enrolled students for the 2018-19 school year, and 535 for the 2015-16 school year; the school district has a total enrollment of 2,816. The district has an enrollment of 1,814 for the 2013-14 school year and 1,917 for the 2014-15 year. It is the largest school district in the state.

Television stations in East Hampton

WVVH-CD Hamptons TV, UHF Channel 50, is the largest FCC licensed TV station in Suffolk County. It broadcasts from the East Hampton Airport industrial park in Wainscott. The two public access channels in East Hampton are Ch 20 public access, and Ch 22 government and education. They are located at the LTV Studios in Waincott, which is located on the East Coast of the U.S. at the end of the East coast of the island of New England. The public access channel is available on the UHF channel 20. The government channel is Ch 22 public access. It is available to the public on the Ch 20 channel and the Ch 22 channel on the other side of the street. The channels are available on both UHF and UHF HD channels, which are the same channel as the public access television channels in the town of East Hampton. The stations are located in the Wainscot Industrial Park. They were built in the 1960s and 1970s. They have been built to accommodate the growing population of the town.

Air Quality, Water Quality, Superfund Sites & UV Index

The Air Quality index is in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York = 31.3. These Air Quality index is based on annual reports from the EPA. Higher values are better (100=best). The number of ozone alert days is used as an indicator of air quality, as are the amounts of seven pollutants including particulates, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, lead, and volatile organic chemicals. The Water Quality Index is 59. A measure of the quality of an area’s water supply as rated by the EPA. Higher values are better (100=best). The EPA has a complex method of measuring the watershed quality, using 15 indicators such as pollutants, turbidity, sediments, and toxic discharges. The Superfund Sites Index is 10. Higher is better (100=best). Based upon the number and impact of EPA Superfund pollution sites in the county, including spending on the cleanup efforts. The UV Index in East Hampton = 3.7 and is a measure of an area's exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. This is most often a combination of sunny weather, altitude, and latitude. The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.

The most recent city population of 59,553 individuals with a median age of 54.2 age the population dropped by -7.12% in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York population since 2000 and are distributed over a density of 381.88 residents per square mile of area (147.45/km²). There are average 2.09 people per household in the 582 households with an average household income of $68,747 a year. The unemployment rate in Alabama is 7.30% of the available work force and has dropped -3.67% over the most recent 12-month period and the projected change in job supply over the next decade based on migration patterns, economic growth, and other factors will increase by 25.36%. The number of physicians in East Hampton per 100,000 population = 248.1.

The annual rainfall in East Hampton = 46.2 inches and the annual snowfall = 26.8 inches. The annual number of days with measurable precipitation (over .01 inch) = 111. The average number of days per year that are predominantly sunny = 208. 80 degrees Fahrenheit is the average daily high temperature for the month of July and 23.7 degrees Fahrenheit is the average daily low temperature for the month of January. The Comfort Index (higher=better) is 47, where higher values mean a more pleasant climate. The Comfort Index measure recognizes that humidity by itself isn't the problem. (Have you noticed nobody ever complains about the weather being 'cold and humid?) It's in the summertime that we notice the humidity the most, when it's hot and muggy. Our Comfort Index uses a combination of afternoon summer temperature and humidity to closely predict the effect that the humidity will have on people.

This is the value of the years most recent home sales data. Its important to note that this is not the average (or arithmetic mean). The median home price is the middle value when you arrange all the sales prices of homes from lowest to highest. This is a better indicator than the average, because the median is not changed as much by a few unusually high or low values.
