Central Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 34,450 at the 2010 census. Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Secatogue tribe of Algonquin native-American people lived in the area now known as Central Islip. The Long Island Rail Road's eastward expansion reached the area, and the Suffolk County Station was opened up in 1842. In 1889, what became the Central Is Lip Psychiatric Center opened. By 1955, it housed over 10,000 patients. In 2000, the baseball stadium for Independent league team Long Island Ducks opened up. A new federal courthouse complex opened, claimed to be the second largest in the country. The CDP has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km²) According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP was 43.6% White, 25.0% African American, 3.4% Asian, 0.9% from two or more races, and 5.9%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 52.1% of the population. Foreign-born residents comprised 34.7%. The median income for a household in theCDP was $55,504, and $57,252 for a family. About 8.3% of families and 11.4%. of the residents were below the poverty line, including 15.7% of those under the age of 18.

History and overview

Central Islip is an area of Long Island, New York. It was once home to the Secatogue tribe of Algonquin native-American people. In 1889, what became the Central Islip Psychiatric Center opened. By 1955, it housed over 10,000 patients, and closed in 1996. In 2000, the baseball stadium for Independent league team Long Island Ducks opened up. In the mid-1990s, a new federal courthouse complex opened, claimed to be the second largest in the country. It is located on part of the site of the former Central Is Lip Psychiatric Center's 788-acre (3.19 km²) campus. In 2009, the Long Island Rail Road's eastward expansion reached the area, and the Suffolk County Station, became the commercial center for housing. In 2010, the Central islip train station was built, but it is in a different location from all of its predecessors. In 2012, the New York City Marathon was held in the area. It took place in the town of Islip, which is on Long Island's East Side. It has a population of around 4,000. The town is home to a number of housing developments, including College Woods, Islip Landing, and Waddington Estates. In 2013, the town celebrated its 50th anniversary of its incorporation as a city. It also celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014, with the opening of a new high school, the College Woods High School. In 2015, the city celebrated its 150th anniversary with a parade.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.1 square miles (18.4 km²), all land. The CDP is located in the eastern part of the town of Laredo, Texas. The town has a population of 1,856. The U.N. World Health Organization has declared Laredos a "hotspot" for the region. The city's population has grown to 1,766. The population of the CPD has grown from 1,638 to 1.876. The United States Census Bureau has recorded the town as having a total population of 2,854. The area's population was 2,744 at the 2010 Census. The state of Texas has recorded its population at 2,632. The county's population is 3,732. the state's total population is 4,722. The district's population grew from 2,527 to 3,876 at the 2000 Census. It is the largest CDP in the state, with a population growth rate of 0.7% from 2000 to 2010. It also has the highest population growth rates in the United States, at 0.8% in that year. It has the lowest unemployment rate (0.7%) and the highest poverty rate (1.3%) of any CDP, at 1.7%. It is located on the Texas-Louisiana border. The community's population growth is estimated to be 0.9% in the year 2014.

As of the 2010 census, there were 34,450 people, 9,365 households, and 6,928 families living in the CDP. The racial/ethnic breakdown was as follows: 43.6% White, 25.0% African American (U.S. Census), 3.4% Asian, 0.9% from other races, and 5.9%. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 52.1%. Foreign-born residents comprised 34.7% of the population. The median income for a household in theCDP was $55,504, and the median income. for a family was $57,252. The per capita income was $17,910. About 15.8% of those under age 18 and 8.7%. of those age 65 or over. were below the poverty line, including 11.4%. of people under the age of 18 and 14.7. of those over 65. The CDP has a population density of 4,398.2 per square mile (1,699.2/km²). There were 9,189 housing units at an average density of 1,264.9/sq mi (488.7/ km²). The racial makeup of the C DP was 43.5% white, 25% black or African American, and 3.0%. Native American, Asian, and some other race were also included in the racial/ ethnic breakdown. The population was spread out, with 29.2% under the Age of 18, 11.0. from 18 to 24, 32.5%. from 25 to 44, 19.8%. from 45 to 64, and 7.4. who were 65 years of age or older.

Schools

Central Islip was home to NYIT (the New York Institute of Technology) and Touro Law Center, located next to the local New York Supreme Court building. The Central Islip Union Free School District operates public schools. Private schools within the district include St. John of God (Catholic) and Our Lady of Providence Regional School. The district is part of the New York City School District, which operates public and private schools across the city. It is located in the Queens borough of Queens and the Suffolk County borough of Long Island. The school district has a population of about 6,000. It also has a high school with a enrollment of about 2,000 students. It was once home to New York State College of Art and Design, which is now part of New York University-Queens. It has also been home to a number of private schools, including St. Mary's School of the Arts and St. Patrick's School for the Arts, among other private schools. The town is also the site of the Long Island School of Music, which was founded in the 1930s and is located on the same site as the original New York state high school. It closed in the 1970s. It reopened in the 1990s as a private school, and has since become a magnet school for students from all over New York and New Jersey. It currently has about 1,200 students, and is home to the Central Is Lip Senior High School, which has a student population of more than 2,500.

Transportation

Islip Terrace is located west of Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma. The community is served by the Long Island Rail Road and the Suffolk Transportation Service Service. There are many bus stops along the 3C, 3D, 42, 45, and 54 bus routes in the community. The Long Island Motor Parkway runs along the northern edge of the community and runs parallel to NY Route 111 (Islip Avenue) The community also has its own version of New York State Route 454, which runs from Brentwood to Islandia. It is also home to the Central Islip Station on the LIRR's Long Island Branch, which is located along the Ronk onkoma Branch of the Rail Road. The town is located on Long Island's East Side, north of the city of Islip, and south of the town of RonkOnkoma, on the New York City borough of Queens. It has a population of about 2,000 people, most of whom live in or near the hamlet of Is Lip Terrace. The hamlet is located in Suffolk County, New York, and is part of the Town of Hempstead, Long Island.
