Waterloo

Waterloo is a town in Seneca County, New York, United States. The town and its major community are named after Waterloo, Belgium, where Napoleon was defeated. The area was the domain of the Seneca tribe and Cayuga tribe, who were visited in the 17th Century by Jesuit missionaries. After the war, the area was in the Central New York Military Tract, reserved for veterans. It was formed from the Town of Junius in 1829. The population of the town was 7,338 at the 2010 census, and is expected to be 7,642 at the 2020 census. The New York State Route 5/U.S. Route 20 concurrency is a major east-west highway in Waterloo. The western town line is the border of Ontario County, and part of the southern town boundary is Seneca Lake and theSeneca River/Cayuga-Seneca Canal. The county seat is Waterloo, which is also the primary county seat ofSeneca County. It is located on the western border of the county, east of Geneva. It has a total area of 21.8 square miles (56.5 km²), of which 21.7 square miles is land and 0.2 square mile (0.4 km²) (0.78%) is water. There is also a village called Waterloo, the primary city of Waterloo, where the mayor is the mayor of the city of Geneva and the town is the county seat.

History

The area was the domain of the Seneca tribe and Cayuga tribe, who were visited in the 17th Century by Jesuit missionaries. The Sullivan Expedition passed through the area in 1779 to destroy the natives and their villages. After the war, the area was in the Central New York Military Tract, reserved for veterans. The region was first settled circa 1800. The town was formed from the Town of Junius in 1829. It is located on the East River, which flows into the Hudson River. It was once part of the town of Binghamton, New York, which was founded in 1828. It has a population of about 2,000 people, with about 1,000 of those living in the town center. The area was once known as the "Town of the Indians" because of the number of the local Indians living in and around the town. It became known as "The Town of Seneca" in the 1800s, when the town was established. The Town of Cayuga was formed in the early 1900s, and was named for the Cayuga River, a tributary of the East river. It now has a total population of around 1,200 people, making it one of the largest towns in New York State. The city's name is derived from the word "Seneca," which means "creeper" or "coyote" in Native American language. It also means "town" in Spanish, which is a derogatory term for a Native American tribe.

Geography

The western town line is the border of Ontario County, New York, and part of the southern town boundary is Seneca Lake and the Seneca River/Cayuga-Seneca Canal. The New York State Route 5/U.N. Route 20 concurrency is a major east-west highway in Waterloo. The town is located on the New York River, which runs through the western part of Waterloo and into the town of Seneca, in the Adirondack Mountains. The Adironde River, a tributary of the Niagara River, flows through the town and into Lake Ontario. The village of Waterloo is located near the town's western border, and is the site of the town center of the village of Genesee, which is located in the eastern part of New York state. It is also the location of the Waterloo-Genesee County line, which forms the border between Ontario County and Niagara County. The Town of Waterloo has a population of 2,816. It has a post office with a ZIP code of 7054. It also has a water intake of 0.2 square mile (0.4 km²), making it one of the smallest towns in the state. The water intake is the only one in the town, and it is the source of water for the village.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,642 people, 3,118 households, and 2,008 families residing in the town. There were 3,386 housing units at an average density of 156.0 per square mile (60.2/km²); 7.9% of housing units were vacant. The town's median income was $43,527, and the median income for a family was $53,625. About 7.6% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.7% of those under age 18 and 4.6%. The town is located on the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey. It is the only town in the state to have had a population of more than 7,000 in the 2010 census. The population of the town was 95.9%, with 1.5% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, and 0.3% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5%, with 0.4% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. The median age was 43.3 years. For every 100 females there were 92.3 males, and for every 100 males there were 89.9 males. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.2%. The rental unit vacancy rate is 10.1%. It is estimated that the town's population will reach 8,000 by the end of the year.

Schools

Until 2005, St. Mary's School operated as a private Roman Catholic school in Waterloo from prekindergarten to Grade 8. After undergoing financial difficulties, it merged with St. Patrick's school in Seneca Falls, New York to form St. John Bosco School in 2005. Fayette Mennonite School is a private mennonite school that teaches Grades 1-8. The school was previously the Border City Elementary School until it moved to the former middle school building. Skoi-Yase School teaches Pre-School to Grade 2. Main Street Multiage School teaches K-5. Waterloo High School - Grades 9-12 is a public school with an enrollment of 608 students. The current principal is Mary Thomas-Madonna, who has been at the school for 20 years and is the school's longest-serving principal. It is located in the former Border City School building, which was built in the 1950s. It was previously known as Border City Middle School and was located on the site of the old Border City High School. It now has its own parking lot and is on the same site as the former border city elementary school. It also has a parking lot on the corner of Main Street where it used to be the border city high school and a parking garage for the middle and high schools. It has a gymnasium and a swimming pool, which it has used since the 1970s. The high school has a pool and tennis courts.

The U.N. has an office in Waterloo, New York, which is open to the public. It also has offices in Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Binghamton. There are also offices in Binghampton, Queens, and New York City, as well as a handful of smaller towns. The village of Waterloo is located in the southwestern part of the town, near the border with the towns of Geneva and Poughkeepsie. The state park is in the southwest corner of the county, near Seneca Lake. It's also near the western town line and the town line with Dobbins Corner, on the west side of US- 20/NY5. There is also a small hamlet on the southern side of the road, called Packwood Corners.
