Oneonta is a city in southern Otsego County, New York, United States. It is one of the northernmost cities of the Appalachian Region. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Oneonta had a population of 13,079. The word "oneonta" is of undetermined origin, but it is popularly believed to mean "place of open rocks" in the Mohawk language. The city was once home to the largest locomotive roundhouse in the world. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. In February of 1991 Mayor David Brenner and Mayor Danny Hicks of OneontA, Alabama officially recognized their cities as sister cities. The first hamlet developed around 1800 and was later known as "Milfordville" In 1830, the Town of oneonta was formed from parts of two other Towns in the county. In 1848, it was incorporated as a village within the Town. In the mid-19th century, the Delaware and Hudson Railroad reached Oneont a, stimulating development as a railroad center and attracting new industries. Because of its location, Oneonte does not serve as a prime industrial city. The Susquehanna River flows westward past the south part of the city. New York State Route 7, New Yorkers State Route 23 and New York state Route 28 pass through the city, as does Interstate 88. The Fairchild Mansion was formerly the home of George Winthrop Fairchild and Thomas Watson, founders of IBM.

History

Oneonta was once home to the largest locomotive roundhouse in the world. The Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy are believed to have emerged and gained dominance prior to the 15th century. The first hamlet developed around 1800 and was later known as "Milfordville" In 1830, the Town of Oneonta. was formed from parts of two other Towns in the county. The village incorporated as a city in 1908. In February of 1991 Mayor David Brenner and Mayor Danny Hicks officially recognized their cities as sister cities at a centennial celebration for oneonta, Alabama. The town is located in the northern part of New York State, near the Hudson and eastern Mohawk valleys. It is located on the eastern edge of the Susquehanna Valley, which is the source of the Otego Creek. It was once the site of the world's largest roundhouse, which was built in 1832. In 1848, the Delaware and Hudson Railroad reached the town, stimulating development as a railroad center and attracting new industries. In the mid-19th century, the town was home to one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the United States. It has been home to a number of museums, including the Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History, and the New York and New York City Museum of Science and Industry. It also hosted the World Series of Baseball in the early 1900s. The World Series was held in New York in 1916 and 1916.

Geography

Oneonta is located at 42°2721N 75°344W (42.456003, -75.062302).According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.3 km²), all land. The city lies between Binghamton and Albany. The Susquehanna River flows westward past the south part of the city. New York State Route 7, New York. State Route 23 and New York state Route 28 pass through the city, as does Interstate 88, which follows the course of the SusqueHanna River past Oneonta. It is the only city in New York that has a city airport. The airport is located on the New York City-Albany border. It has a population of about 2,000. It was the site of a World War II-era air base, which is now a part of New York's Catskills National Park. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a base station in the city that was built in the 1930s. The town has a post office that opened in the 1950s. It closed in the 1970s. In the 1990s, the town was the location of a New York-New York City rail station. It also has a small airport that was once the hub of a rail line that connected New York with Albany. It now serves as a regional hub for New York and New Jersey. It's the only town in the state to have an airport.

Architecture

The architecture of Oneonta consists of a variety of Victorian and 20th-century commercial and domestic styles, including low-rise commercial buildings. There are several historic buildings that were originally homes of prominent people. Nader Towers is the tallest building in the city, standing nine stories high. The Fairchild Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and was formerly the home of George Winthrop Fairchild, one of the original partners with Thomas Watson. Also, George I. Wilber House is a historic home built in two phases, 1875 and about 1890. It is a three-story, round corner tower, cross gabled roof, and a large, very decorative wrap-around porch with a porte-cochere. In 1997 it became home to the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts (now the Community Arts Network of oneonta). It was listed on the national register in 2000 and is operated as a senior citizens' housing facility. Also listed are: Bresee Hall, Chapin Memorial Church, Ford Block, Fortin Site, Municipal Building, OneontA Armory, Stonehouse Farm, and Old Post Office. The city does not serve as a prime industrial city because of its location, because of which it has very few industrial complexes. It also has a number of historic districts, including the Downtown Historic District and Walnut Street Historic District. The tallest building is Nader towers, which is owned by the City of Oneonte Housing Authority.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13,292 people, 4,253 households, and 1,913 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,032.6 people per square mile (1,171.7/km²). Education

SUNY Oneonta began as a normal school and a teacher's college in 1889. Hartwick College moved into the city in 1928. OCSD enrolls students from the communities of the City, Town, and Laurens. The city has one high school, one middle school, and three elementary schools. A fourth elementary school, Center Street School, was closed in June 2012 due to declining enrollment and decreased funding from New York State. It was the last elementary school to be closed in the city's history. The City has a total enrollment of about 900 students. The high school has an enrollment of 650 students, the middle school has 300 students, and the elementary school has about 300 students. It is the only city in New York that has a high school in the state of New York. It also has a middle school and an elementary school that have a totalrollment of 900. The town of Laurens has about 1,000 students, while the town of Davenport has about 500. The Town of OneontA has about 2,000 people, and it is the largest town in the town. The population of Milford has about 3,500 people, making it one of the smallest towns in the U.S. It has a population of 1,500. Parks and recreation

Damaschke Field, home of the Oneonta Outlaws of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL), is located in Neawha Park. Neahwa Park and Wilber Park are the city's two major municipal parks.
