The name Honeoye comes from the Seneca word ha-ne-a-yah, which means lying finger, or where the finger lies. The village was founded in 1791 by Zebulon Norton when he purchased 1,820 acres (7.4 km²) of land for the price of 12½ cents per acre. In 1827, Hiram Finch built a second mill, which would come to be called the Lower Mill to differentiate it from the earlier mill. The Lower Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The U.S. Post Office, St. John's Episcopal Church, Totiakton Site, and United States Post Office are also listed. The population of the village was 2,674 at the 2010 census. It is in the most southeastern corner of Monroe County, approximately 13 miles outside of the City of Rochester. The name comes from a local story of a Native American whose finger was bitten by a rattlesnake and who therefore cut off his finger with a tomahawk. In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 25.2%, and 18.5% who were 65 years of age or older. In 2000, there were 2,595 people, 1,114 households, and 672 families residing in the village. The median income for a household was $47,413 and the median income was $66,818.

History

The village was founded in 1791 by Zebulon Norton when he purchased 1,820 acres (7.4 km²) of land for the price of 12½ cents per acre. He built a grist mill and later a saw mill, at a waterfall on Honeoye Creek. In 1827, Hiram Finch built a second mill, which would come to be called the Lower Mill to differentiate it from the earlier mill. The Lower Mill was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1973. St. John's Episcopal Church, Totiakton Site, and U.S. Post Office are also listed. HoneOYe Falls experienced an epidemic of scarlet fever in April 1893. The area was originally known as Norton Mills, and the mill was built in 1827. The mill is one of the oldest mills in the United States, dating back to the 17th century. It was built on a site that is now part of the National Park Service site, which is located on the banks of H oneoye creek. It is the only mill in the state that is still in use today. It has been listed as a National Historic Site since 1973. The Mill is also part of a historic district that is also on the national Register of historic places. The village's historic district is also listed on national historic sites. It includes the HOneoye Falls Village Historic District, St. Johns Episcopal Church and the U. States Post Office.

Geography

Honeoye Falls is located at 42°5723N 77°3514W (42.956331, 77.587353). The village is in the most southeastern corner of Monroe County, approximately 13 miles outside of the City of Rochester. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²) It is located on the falls of Honeoyes Creek, which is the primary outlet of H oneoye Lake. The village was founded in the 18th century by a group of men who lived on the banks of the creek. It is the site of a former post office, which was closed in the 1950s and 1960s. It was re-opened in the 1970s and is now a part of the city of Rochester, New York. It has a population of about 1,200. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the village's area to be 2,636 square miles. The population of the village was 1,071 in the 2010 Census. The area has an estimated population of 1,081. It lies on the main outlet of the HoneOYe Lake, which flows into Honeoys Lake from the east. The town is located in Monroe County and is located near the town of Rochester and the village of Chautauqua, in the eastern part of New York state. The nearest town is Rochester, about 13 miles to the south.

Government

The village is governed by a board consisting of a mayor and four trustees, all elected by registered village voters. The Board of Trustees are:Mayor Richard B. Milne, Trustee Jacquelin Main, Trustees Shari Stottler, Daniel Harris, and Deputy Mayor Stanley E. Worboys Jr. Justice Sheldon Boyce presides over the Village Court. The village has a population of about 1,000 people. The mayor and trustees are elected to a four-year term. The board of trustees is made up of four members elected by the village's registered voters, all of whom are from the village. The trustees are: mayor, deputy mayor, and deputy mayor. The Village Court is presided over by Justice Sheldon boyce, who also serves as the village attorney. Education

93.2% of the population 25 years and older hold a high school diploma or higher, 43.5% a bachelor's degree or higher. Schools within the village include Honeoye Falls-Lima Senior High School. The Lima Primary School is in the district but located in the Town of Lima. The School mascot is the Cougar and the school colors are blue and white. The school district also includes Manor Intermediate School and the Manor School for the Deaf. The village has a population of 2,000, with the majority of its residents living in or near the town of Lima, where the primary school is located. The town is home to the New York State Museum, which is open to the public every day of the year. It is located on the banks of the Susquehannock River, which runs through the village. The museum is open every day except when it is closed for renovations or special events. It has a collection of historic buildings, including the original New York City Opera House, which dates back to the 18th century. It was also the site of New York's first public theater, which opened in 1876. The city's first post-secondary institution was the HoneOYe Falls High School, which was founded in 1872. The current high school is the Honesdale High School which was established in 1883. The district also has a middle school and an intermediate school, which were founded in the 1950s.
