East Rochester is a coterminous town and village located southeast of the City of Rochester in Monroe County, New York, United States. The village, home to approximately 6,600 people, is surrounded by Pittsford on the west side and by Perinton to the east. A Little League baseball team from East Rochester captured the Senior Little League World Championship by defeating La Habra California 4-2 in Des Moines, Iowa in 1966. The United States Post Office (East Rochester) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Two derailments have occurred on the double-track mainline railroad running through East Rochester. The first occurred on October 29, 1969 when a 30-car Penn Central freight train carrying produce derailed onto West Maple Avenue. On January 16, 2007, a 13-car CSX intermodal train traveling 60 mph (97 km/h) and carrying retail goods partially derailed at the South Lincoln underpass, spilling at least five containers and two intermodAL wells onto the road below. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the village has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.5 km²), all of which is land. The population of East Rochester was 6,650 as of the census of 2000. History
East Rochester is the primary city name, but also E Rochester are acceptable city names or spellings. The village of East Rochester was originally known as the Village of Despatch when the community was incorporated in 1897. The United States Post Office (East Rochester, New York) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. A Little League baseball team from East Rochester captured the Senior Little League World Championship by defeating La Habra California 4-2 in Des Moines, Iowa in 1966. The village was divided between the towns of Perinton, Pittsford, and Penfield in 1981, and later became a coterminous town and village. Two derailments have occurred on the double-track mainline railroad running through East Rochester. The first occurred on October 29, 1969 when a 30-car Penn Central freight train carrying produce derailed onto West Maple Avenue. On January 16, 2007, a 13-car CSX intermodal train traveling 60 mph (97 km/h) and carrying retail goods partially derailed at the South Lincoln underpass. The 200 block of East Maple Avenue, however, remained closed for repair work for several days afterward. As in 1969, no one was injured in the accident. East Rochester is the smallest community in the world to win either a Little League or Senior Littleleague World Championship. It is also the only village in the U.S. to win both the Little League and senior Little League world championships at the same time. It has been the site of two World Series football games, the first of which took place on September 26, 1974.
Geography
East Rochester is located at 43°644N 77°2913W (43.112413, -77.487).According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.5 km²), all land. Irondequoit Creek runs along the eastern edge of the village. The village is located in the town of East Rochester, New York, in the Monroe County region of New York. The town has a history of settlement dating back to the 18th century, when it was part of the Town of Rochester and the village was known as East Rochester. It is the site of the East Rochester High School, which was founded in 1876. The East Rochester School District was established in 1881. The school district was the first in the state to build a high school, and it is still the largest in New York state. It was founded by the town's first residents, who moved there in 1883. The current school district has been in existence since 1894, when the town was founded. It has been the seat of the Rochester City School District since 1891, and the town has been a part of it since the 1930s. It also has a post-secondary school, the Rochester Institute of Technology, which opened in the 1950s. The village is governed by a mayor and village board on which the mayor, deputy mayor, and three elected village trustees are seated. By General municipal Law the Village Administrator runs the day to day operations. There are additional boards for architectural review, assessment review, library, and zoning appeals. Two commissions for the village cable channel and planning, and a housing authority. The village has a population of 2,000. It is located in the central part of the town. The town is located on the east side of the river. It has an population of 1,200. It was founded in 1872. It had a population 1,000 in 1876. It now has a total population of 3,000, with 2,200 residents living in the village. It also has a number of non-profit organizations, such as the local library and the local housing authority, that provide services to the community. There is also a public library, with a collection of more than 1,500 books. The city has a public square, which is used for public events. The mayor has the power to appoint a police chief, who is responsible for enforcing the law. The police chief also has the authority to issue tickets for crimes that occur in the city. The council has the ability to issue fines for violations of the law, which are punishable by up to $1,500. The chief can also issue a $500 fine for a crime that occurs outside of the city limits. Transportation
Three state highways enter the vicinity of East Rochester. NY 31F carries over 27,000 vehicles per day but does not enter the village. NY 153 is the only north-south street in the village that runs from one end of the village to the other and continues into neighboring towns. The double-tracked CSX Transportation Rochester Subdivision rail line runs east-west through East Rochester, dividing the town in half. No grade crossings exist within the East Rochester limits. Two streets, NY 153 and South Lincoln Road, pass under the mainline by way of underpasses roughly 0.5 mi (0.8 km) apart. Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority routes 81 and 82 service the village, connecting it directly to neighboring Fairport and Rochester and providing an express route for commuting between the two villages and the city. The village has a population of 2,000, with the majority of residents living in or near the town of Rochester. The town's population was 3,000 in the year 2000, with most of its residents living near the city of Rochester and the rest in or around the village of Rochester itself. Notable person
Robert Trent Jones was a golf course architect. He designed the courses at Pebble Beach and Shinnecock Hills. Jones was also an avid golfer. He died at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife and two children.
