Middlesex

Middlesex was a portion of Piscataway Township, until May 6, 1913 when it was incorporated as a separate entity through the action of the state legislature and local referendum. The borough's name derives from Middlesex, England. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 13,635, reflecting a decline of 82 (0.6%) from the 13,717 counted in the 2000 Census. Unincorporated communities, localities and place names located partially or completely within the borough include East Bound Brook and Lincoln. Middlesex is in the central division of the Raritan Valley (a line of cities in central New Jersey), along with Dunellen, Bound Brook, and South Bound Brook. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Borough had a total area of 3.51 square miles (9.09 km²), including 3.49 square miles of land and 0.02 sq km² of water (0.63%). The borough borders the municipalities of Dunellen and Pisc ataway Township in Middlesex County; and Bound Brook, Bridgewater Township, Green Brook Township and South. Bound Brook in Somerset County. The Borough is located in the New Jersey Bay Area, which is part of the New York City metropolitan area. It is the only borough in New Jersey that is not part of New Jersey's Hudson River Valley. The population of Middlesex was 13.6 million as of the 2000 U.N. Census.

History

Middlesex was a portion of Piscataway Township, until May 6, 1913 when it was incorporated as a separate entity. The Harris Lane School was a one-room schoolhouse that was the oldest school in Middlesex County, dating back to its construction in the 1790s. Our Lady of Mt. Virgin School was the first parochial school built in 1954. In 1905, the Lincoln section of Middlesex organized a volunteer fire company and that set the organization of four other fire companies in the Borough. George Harris was elected as the first mayor and the first borough council was elected at the same time. Two constables were the law enforcement officers and were soon assisted by five appointed marshals. The original Pierce School was known as the East Bound Brook School House and The Parker House was also used for education until it was converted into a two-family house. As the Borough grew new schools were constructed to accommodate many more students. The first school was built in 1790 and the second in 1820. The current school was opened in 1875. The last school was constructed in 1954 and is known as Our Lady Of Mount Virgin School. It is located in the town of Lincoln, New Jersey and is located on the banks of the Raritan River. It was the site of the first nuclear power plant in the U.S. in the 1950s and 1960s. The town has a population of about 2,000 people and is home to the New Jersey Medical Examiner's Office.

Geography

The borough borders the municipalities of Dunellen and Piscataway Township in Middlesex County; and Bound Brook, Bridgewater Township, Green Brook Township and SouthBound Brook in Somerset County. The borough is located on the New Jersey Turnpike, which connects New Jersey with New York and New York City. It has a population of 2,788. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the borough's population at 2,816. The population of the borough was 2,902 in the 2010 Census. It is located at 3.49 square miles, or 9.03 km², with 0.06 square miles as its total area. The town of Lincoln is located in the eastern part of the state, on the Delaware River. It was founded in 1838. The name comes from the English word "lincoln" which means "lion" or "lily" and refers to the town's history of being called "Lincoln, New Jersey" and "Linconshire".

Demographics

As of the 2000 United States Census there were 13,717 people, 5,048 households, and 3,740 families residing in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 87.26% White, 3.36% African American, 4.16% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.21% from other races, and 1.86% from two or more races. The Census Bureau's 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that (in 2010 inflation-adjusted dollars) median household income was $80,338 (with a margin of error of +/ $7,790) and the median family Income was $93,817 (+/ $13,746). About 0.6% of families and 2.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1. 6% of those under age 18 and 4.6%) in the 2010 U.S. census. In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.1%. under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 29.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40.7 years. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 91.8 males. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.17. In 2010, the median income for a household was $60,23 and the. median for a family was $70,343.

Government

Middlesex is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body is comprised of a Mayor and a Borough Council, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis as part of the November general election. As of 2022, the Mayor of Middlesex is Republican John L. Madden, whose term of office ends December 31, 2023. For the 117th U.S. Congress, New Jersey's Twelfth Congressional District is represented by Bonnie Watson Coleman (D, Ewing Township). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025) Middlesex County is governed by a Board of County Commissioners, whose seven members are elected on apartisan basis to serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis. At an reorganization meeting in January, the board selects from among its members a commissioner director and a deputy director. At the annual annual meeting, the Board of Commissioners selects a director and deputy director for the year to be followed by a director of the New Jersey Department of Human Services. The Middlesex Borough Council is empowered to enact local ordinances, to levy municipal taxes and conduct the affairs of the community. In almost all cases, it can review and approve the actions of other Middlesex borough committees and agencies. All legislative powers of the Borough are exercised by the Mayor and Council. These powers can take the form of a resolution, ordinance or proclamation. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council.

Education

The Middlesex Board of Education serves public school students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. As of the 2020-2021 school year, the district, comprised of five schools, had an enrollment of 2,018 students and 182.2 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 11.1:1. Schools in the district are Hazelwood Elementary School with 189 students in grades Pre-K3, Parker Elementary School, Watchung Elementary School and Middlesex High School. Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools, a county-wide vocational school district, offers full-time career and technical education at its three technical high schools, with no tuition charged to students for attendance. The district's superintendent is Dr. Roberta Freeman, who has been in her position since 2000 and is a member of the New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders. She is the first woman to be the superintendent of the Middlesex School District in the state's history, and the second woman to hold the post in New Jersey. She was elected to the position in 2008. She has been the district's chief executive officer since 2010. She previously served as superintendent of Middlesex Township School District, where she was in charge of the elementary and middle schools. She also served as the district superintendent from 2000 to 2010. The school district is based in Edison, New Jersey, and has a population of 1.2 million. It is one of the largest school districts in the U.S.

Parks

There are many parks scattered through Middlesex Boro. Victor Crowell Park, or commonly known as Duck Pond, is a park in the boro that contains, park equipment for kids, a walking trail, and small docks with benches to view the water. The park is located on the north side of the city. It is one of the oldest parks in the city, dating back to the 19th century. It was named after a local family of the same name, who lived in the area at the beginning of the 20th Century. It has been named after the family's son, Victor, who died in a car accident in the early 20th century, and was buried in a shallow grave in the park. It also contains a small pond, which is used by local children to play in. It's also known as the "Duck Pond" park, because of its location on the south side of Middlesex, where the city is located. It contains a number of small docks, which are used by children to enjoy the water, as well as a small park equipment area for kids to run around. It can also be reached by walking along a trail that runs through the park, or by taking a ride on a boat on the nearby river. There are many other parks in Middlesex that are scattered across the city that are popular with locals and visitors to the area. The city is home to many different types of parks, many of which are open to the public at different times.

Transportation

As of May 2010, the borough had a total of 54.86 miles (88.29 km) of roadways. New Jersey Route 28 is the main highway passing through Middlesex. NJ Transit provides service to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan on the 114 route and to Newark on the 65 and 66 routes. U.S. Route 22 lies just north of the borough and provides access to I-287 and I-95. The borough is part of the New Jersey Bay Area, which includes parts of New Jersey, New York, and New Jersey City. The New Jersey Turnpike, which runs through the borough, connects Middlesex to New York City and the East Coast. It also connects the borough to the New York and Long Island Rail Road and the Staten Island Railway and Staten Island Railroad, which connect the borough with Staten Island and the city of New York. It is the only borough in New Jersey to have its own public transit system, with NJ Transit providing service to Newark and New York via the 65, 66, 65 and 65A, 65B, 65C, 65D, 65E, 65F, 65G, 65H, 65K, 65L, 65M, 65R, 65S, 65T, 65U, 65W, 66M, 66S, 66C, 66A, 66B, 66D, 66H, 66E, 66F, 66L, 66P, 66R, 66W, 6M, 6S, 6A, 6B, 6C, 6D, 6H, 6E, 6K, 6L, 6N, 6P, 6G, 6F, 6J, 6R, 6U, 6,2, 7,4, 5,5, 6.2, 5.5, 4,5 and 6,6, 6% of Middlesex is covered by New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The UV Index in Middlesex = 3.9 and is a measure of an area's exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays. This is most often a combination of sunny weather, altitude, and latitude. The UV Index has been defined by the WHO (www.who.int/news-room/questions-and-answers/item/radiation-the-ultraviolet-(uv)-index) and is uniform worldwide.
