North Arlington is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 15,392, reflecting an increase of 211 (+1.4%) from the 15,181 counted in the 2000 Census. As the site of Holy Cross Cemetery, which has interred almost 290,000 individuals since its establishment in 1915, North Arlington has almost 20 times more dead people than living. In 1755, the first steam engine in North America was assembled in North Arlington. North Arlington was formed by a referendum passed on March 9, 1896, and incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1896. It was called North Arlington because it was north of the Arlington section of Kearny, which had been named from the Arlington Station on the Erie Railroad. The borough borders the municipalities of Lyndhurst, Essex County, and Kearny in Hudson County. The bordering neighborhood in Kearny is called Arlington, from which the name North Arlington is derived. The population of North Arlington in the 2010 U.S. Census counted 15,295 people, with 6,117 households and 4,117 families in the borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 8259% (12,12,712) White, 1,220% (220) African American, 787% (1,211) Native American, 0,23% Native American (1.87%) Hispanic or Latino (0.23%).
History
North Arlington is the primary city name, but also N Arlington are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is Borough of North Arlington . Copper was mined at the Schuyler Copper Mine in present-day North Arlington during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1755, the first steam engine in North America was assembled in North Arlington. North Arlington, together with Lyndhurst and Rutherford, was the site of the EnCap project, an effort to remediate landfills on the 785-acre (3.18 km²) site. On November 18, 2015, North Arlington approved plans for FedEx to build a 139,000-square-foot (12,900 m2) freight distribution facility on a former steel dumping ground on Porete Avenue. FedEx planned to complete the building by early 2017. On May 27, 2008, the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission terminated its agreement with EnCap Golf Holdings, the company that had the contract to redevelop the site, after the company had missed targets to clean up the landfill as part of the project. The company planned to hire 225 people to work at the facility, which was to be completed in 2017. The borough was formed by a referendum passed on March 9, 1896, and incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1896. It was called North Arlington because it was north of the Arlington section of Kearny, which had been named from the Arlington Station on the Erie Railroad. It is one of the smallest boroughs in New Jersey, with a population of just over 2,000. It has a population growth rate of 0.7%.
Geography
The borough borders the municipalities of Lyndhurst in Bergen County; Belleville in Essex County; and Kearny in Hudson County. The bordering neighborhood in Kearny is called Arlington, from which the name North Arlington is derived. Route 7 (Belleville Turnpike) occupies much of the border of between Bergen and Hudson County to the north and south. Cemeteries lie along both sides of the route, with North Arlington Jewish Cemetery and Arlington Memorial Park in Hudson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the borough had a total area of 2.53 square miles (6.55 km²) of land and 0.05 square miles of water (1.78%), including 2.48 square miles of land (5.43 km²), and 2.43 square miles (6.43 km²) of water (2.53 sq m) The borough is located in New Jersey's Hudson County and is part of the Bergen-Hudson County Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes the towns of Kearny and Lyndhurst. The borough has a population of 2,816. It is located at the junction of the New Jersey Turnpikes (Bergen) and the Hudson River (Hud Hudson) and is located on the New York-New Jersey border. It has a post office with the ZIP code of 7053. The town's name is derived from the town of North Arlington, which is on the other side of the river. It was once known as North Arlington.
Demographics
As of the 2000 United States Census there were 15,181 people, 6,392 households, and 4,129 families residing in the borough. Same-sex couples headed 39 households in 2010, an increase from the 28 counted in 2000. The median household income was $71,232 (with a margin of error of +/ $6,829) in 2010. The per capita income for the borough was $34,265 (+/ $2,555). About 4.6% of families and 5.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18. The borough has a population of 15,392, with 6,573 housing units at an average density of 2,566.6 per square mile (991.0/km²). The racial makeup of the borough is 82.59% (12,712) White, 1.43% (220) Black or African American, 0.23% (36) Native American, 7.87% (1,211) Asian,0.01% (2) Pacific Islander, 6.03% (928) from other races, and 1.84% (283) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.86% (3,211), and 10.57% (7,211). The median age was 41.5 years. For every 100 females ages 18 and older there were 88.2 males.
Economy
Companies based in North Arlington include Pizza Land, which was featured in the opening credits of The Sopranos. In Law & Order episode 10.6, "Marathon" (1999), a pizza box from the restaurant was used by a suspect to transport and conceal firearms. The restaurant is located on the corner of Belleville Road and North Arlington Boulevard. It was also featured in an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Minds, entitled "Marathon", in which a suspect used a pizza box from the restaurant to conceal a gun. Sports
North Arlington offers an extensive public athletic/recreation program for youth. The Inline Skating Club of America is a skating facility that is the home of the New Jersey Grizzlies of the Professional Inline Hockey Association Pro Division. North Arlington recreation offers "Recreation for Developmentally Challenged Children" This program includes cooperation from neighboring towns, and consists of Spring baseball and soccer. The recreation program serves adults with an adult men's basketball league as well as an adult women's volleyball program. The "Junior Vikings" are a popular football and cheerleading program, named after the North Arlington High School "Vikings" The North Arlington Police Department is based in the town of North Arlington, New Jersey. The police force has been in existence since the early 1900s. The department was formed in response to an outbreak of smallpox in the late 1800s. It is the oldest police department in New Jersey, having been in operation since the mid-19th century. It has been the site of several high-profile incidents, including the shooting of two police officers and the murder of a third. The town has been home to a number of sports teams, including New Jersey's New Jersey Nets and the Wallington Grizzlies. The New Jersey Rangers are a professional ice hockey team, playing in the PIAA Pro Division and the PHL Minor League. The Wallington Grizzles are also a professional minor league ice hockey club. The city also has a youth baseball league and a girls softball league.
Parks and recreation
Riverside County Park is a Bergen County Park covering 85 acres (34 ha) located on River Road between Lyndhurst and North Arlington. It has a playground, athletic fields, tennis courts, a Bocce ball court and fitness center. The park is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except for special events, such as weddings and funerals.
Government
North Arlington is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. The Borough Council is comprised of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. Bergen County is governed by a directly elected County Executive, with legislative functions performed by a Board of County Commissioners. North Arlington is located in the 9th Congressional District and is part of the 36th state legislative district. For the 117th U.S. Congress, New Jersey's Ninth Congressional District is represented by Bill Pascrell (D, Paterson). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Democrats Cory Booker (Newark, term ends 2027) and Bob Menendez (Harrison, term end 2025). For the 2022-2023 session, the36th Legislative District of the New Jersey Legislature isrepresented in the State Senate by Paul Sarlo (D, Wood-Ridge) and in the General Assembly by Clinton Calabrese (D) and Gary Schaer (D), Passaic. As of 2022, the Mayor of North Arlington Borough is Republican Daniel H. Pronti, who won the 2018 mayoral election, replacing Joseph P. Bianchi on the ballot, following Biaanchi's death on October 10, 2018; Bianchi, a volunteer firefighter in the borough who responded to Ground Zero after the September 11 terror attacks, died of cancer.
Education
As of the 201819 school year, the district, comprised of five schools, had an enrollment of 1,869 students and 135.1 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a studentteacher ratio of 13.8:1. In 2010, Roosevelt Elementary School was recognized with the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. In May 2017, the Archdiocese of Newark announced the closing of the high school as of June 30, 2017, in the wake of sharply dropping enrollment and financial challenges. Public school students from the borough, and all of Bergen County, are eligible to attend the secondary education programs offered by theBergen County Technical Schools. The district offers programs on a shared-time or full-time basis, with admission based on a selective application process and tuition covered by the student's home school district.Queen of Peace, a Roman Catholic parish, operates two parochial schools, Queen of Peace Elementary School (founded in 1923 and serving Pre-K to 8th Grade) and Queen of peace High School (9th12th grade, founded in 1930) which closed after the 2016-2017 school year. In the 1970s and 1980s, declining enrollment led North Arlington to be one of the few school districts in the state that featured involuntary "combined classes" whereby classes at their Roosevelt School for grades 4 and 5 and for grades 6 and 7 were combined into a single classroom with a single teacher for each pair of grades.
Emergency services
The North Arlington Fire Department (NAFD) is an all-volunteer fire department organized in 1910. The department is staffed by 80 fully trained firefighters. The North Arlington Volunteer Emergency Squad (NAVES), was founded on June 2, 1972. The squad consists of 55 members ranging in ages from 16 to 58 years of age. NAVES currently operates four ambulances and a First Responder/ Command Vehicle. North Arlington Police Department (NAPD) protects and services the citizens of North Arlington. The Chief of Police is Scott Hedenberg. The police department is located at 214 Ridge Road. The NAPD is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. It is funded by donations from the public, including donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and foundations. It was founded in 1910 and has been in existence since. It has three separate firehouses, manned by three fire companies: Hose Company 1, Schuyler Engine Company 2, and Eagle Truck Company 3. It also has a youth squad and a growing Auxiliary which assist in non-riding functions such as fundraising and administrative duties. It works with a paid staff Monday thru Friday 6am - 6pm and volunteer staff from 6pm to 6am Monday through Friday and day and night Saturday and Sunday. There is a Crew Chief on each tour that reports to a lieutenant. The NAVES has a Youth Squad and a Growing Auxiliary. It currently has 55 members(2018) ranging in age between 16 and 58.
