Valentine is a city in Cherry County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 2,737 at the 2010 census. It was named for Edward K. Valentine, a Nebraska representative. In the Lakota language, Valentine is known as Oínai or Mnináaa Otúwahe, meaning "station stopping place" or "water and waterfall city" It is located at 42°5225N 100°331W (42.873686, 100.550308). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km²), of which 2.22 square miles is land and 0.03 square mile (0.08 km²) is water. It is immediately north of the Niobrara River, on the northern edge of the Sandhills physiographic region. Snake River Falls, the largest waterfall in Nebraska, is located on the Snake River between the reservoir (a few miles downstream) and Valentine. Just to the west, an arched cantilever truss bridge named the Bryan Bridge is also open to through traffic. A large red neon heart (a star during the Christmas season) is found on the pine-covered Minnechaduza Creek canyon wall at the north end of Main Street. The average window for freezing temperatures is September 25 thru May 11, allowing a growing season of 136 days. On an average year, there are 7 afternoons that reach 100 °F (37.8 °C) or higher, 41.3 days that do not climb above freezing, and 17.9 mornings with a low of 0 °F or below.

History

Valentine was named for Edward K. Valentine, a Nebraska representative. In 2007, National Geographic Adventure magazine included Valentine in its list of the best 100 adventure towns and cities. In the Lakota language, Valentine is known as Oínai or Mnináaa Otúwahe, meaning "station stopping place" or "water and waterfall city". Valentine participates in an annual re-mailing program where thousands of pieces of mail flow into the local U.S. Post Office so that they can be re- mailed with a special Valentine's Day postmark and verse. The Valentine post office was established on December 4, 1882. The Sioux City and Pacific Railroad was extended to that point and train service began on April 1, 1883. As late as 1967, Valentine was split between two time zones. According to a news report, Valentine's post office (which was in the central zone) split the difference and turned back its clock by only half an hour when clocks were required to be set back one hour for daylight saving time. Valentine was included in the 2007 National GeographicAdventure magazine list of best adventure towns. The city is located on the banks of the Red River, which flows through the center of the town. The Red River runs through the heart of the city, which is located at the intersection of Main Street and South Main Street. The town is also known as the "Heart of the River" because of its location on the river's banks.

Geography

Valentine is located at 42°5225N 100°331W (42.873686, 100.550308). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km²) With a humid continental climate (Köppen Dwa), Valentine experiences extremes of heat and cold annually. The normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 24.5 °F in January to 75.7 °F (24.3 °C) in July. The average window for freezing temperatures is September 25 thru May 11, allowing a growing season of 136 days. A large red neon heart (a star during the Christmas season) is found on the pine-covered Minnechaduza Creek canyon wall at the north end of Main Street. Snake River Falls, the largest waterfall in Nebraska, is located on the Snake River between the reservoir (a few miles downstream) and Valentine. Just south of Valentine, a pair of bridges span the Niobrara River. The modern bridge carries traffic north and south along U.S. Route 83. Just to the west, an arched cantilever truss bridge named the Bryan Bridge is also open to through traffic. It is made of steel and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The very dry winters as dry as the driest desert areas of the Southwest mean snowfall is modest, averaging 34.2 inches or 0.87 metres per season (peaking in February and March).

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,737 people, 1,259 households, and 719 families living in the city. There were 1,430 housing units at an average density of 644.1 per square mile (248.7/km²) The racial makeup of the city was 92.20% White, 0.04% African American, 5.78% Native American, 0,57% Asian, and 1.21% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.89% of the population. The city's median income was $47,639, and the median income for a family was $52,632. In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.0%) from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there are 87.1 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there is 80.8 males. The per capita income for the city is $22,715. About 1.6%. of families and 6.4% of. the population were below the poverty line, including 0% of those under 18 and 16.0%. of those age 65 or over. Education

Valentine City Schools was the school district until it merged into Valentine Community Schools in 2006. Schools include: Valentine Elementary School, Valentine Middle School, and Valentine High School. Private schools include Grace Lutheran School, Zion Lutheran School and Grace Christian School. Valentine is in Valentine Community School's school district, which includes the following schools: Valentine City Schools, Valentine Christian Schools, and Grace Lutheran Schools. The town has a population of about 2,000. It is located in the eastern part of the county. The city is in the county's eastern part, near the town of Litchfield, and the town's eastern edge is near the city of Vallecchio, in the western portion of the state. It also has a small percentage of residents who live outside the city limits, in Litchford County, and in the city's eastern suburbs, such as the towns of Lincolns, Linconshire, and Lincosburg. The community has a history of violence, particularly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was the site of the Lincon County Courthouse, which was built in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1950s and 1960s, the town was the scene of several violent incidents, including the shooting of two students by a group of students. The school district had a reputation for violence, and was known as the "City of Violence" in the 1960s and '70s. The district has a long history of poverty, especially in the early 1990s.

Culture

In 2011/2012, an independent feature film, The Aviation Cocktail, had its principal photography in Valentine. The film's principal photography took place in Valentine in the winter of 2011-2012. It was the first time the city had been used as a filming location for a feature film. The movie was released in the summer of 2012 and was a box office success.
