Florissant is a middle class, second-ring northern suburb of St. Louis. It is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Missouri. The first civil government was formed in 1786. In 2012, Florissant was ranked 76 in Money magazine's top-100 list of Best Places to Live America's Best Small Cities. In 2014, Florisant ranked as the #1 Best Small City to Retire To in America and the second-safest city in Missouri. In 2010, the city had a total population of 52,533, making it the 12th-largest city inouri and the largest municipality in St Louis County. The city has a total area of 12.87 square miles (33.33 km²), of which 12.56 square miles. (32.56 km²) is covered by land and 0.31 square mile (0.80 km²). The city was once known as St. Ferdinand, after the parish of the same name. The heart of Old Town Florissan is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The City of St Ferdinand Multiple Resource Area (MRA) encompasses approximately 156 city blocks and encloses the approximate area of the present city of Florissants. The MRA comprises 124 historically significant properties ranging in date from 1790 to 1940. The oldest section of the MRA is called Old Town, and is a U.S. Historic District. The last train to Florissent ran on November 14, 1931.
History
Florissant is the primary city name, but also Black Jack are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Florissant. The Valley of Florissant is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Missouri. Originally a separate town, and now an inner suburb of St. Louis, the community was centered on (and frequently called after) the parish of. St. Ferdinand. The heart of Old Town Florissan is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the St.Ferdinand Central Historic District. James J. Eagan was the first mayor ofFlorissant after a charter amendment created the position. He ultimately served 37 years from 1963 until his death on November 2, 2000, being re-elected into office nine times. In 2014, Florisant ranked as the #1 Best Small City to Retire To in America and the second-safest city in Missouri. It was ranked 76 in Money magazine's top-100 list of Best Places to Live America's Best Small Cities. It is a U.S. Historic District and is listed individually on the national register of historic places. It includes 124 historically significant properties ranging in date from 1790 to 1940. The oldest section of the present city is located in the oldest part of the city, the Old Town area. The city is home to four historic buildings: the 1819 convent, 1821 church, 1840 rectory, and 1888 schoolhouse. It also contains the Cold Water Cemetery, where the first burial was held in c. 1809. The last train to the area was constructed in 1878an extension of the line which went from St Louis City to Normandy. The boundaries of the district are roughly rue St. Francois, rue. Ferdinand, and rue Saint Denis, and Lafayette Street.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.87 square miles (33.33 km²) of which 12.56 square miles are land and 0.31 square mile (0.80 km² is covered by water. The city is located on the Ohio River, which flows through the city. The Ohio River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city and the city's eastern edge. The Ohio River is one of the few rivers in the state that flows into the Ohio River. The river is also known as the "Ohio River" or the "Phenomenon River" because of its name. It is the only river in the city that flows through both the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The town's name is a combination of the words "Ohio" and "phenomenal", which means "beautiful" or "miraculously beautiful". The city's nickname is "The City of the Stars" because it is considered to be the most beautiful city in the United States. It was named after the town of the same name, which was founded in the 17th century. It has a population of about 2,000 people, or 2.3% of the town's total population. The City of Stars is located in the eastern part of the state, and has a latitude and longitude of 12.87 square miles (32.53 km²).
Demographics
At the 2010 census, there were 52,158 people, 21,247 households and 13,800 families living in the city. There were 22,632 housing units at an average density of 1,801.9 per square mile. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.00. The racial makeup of the city was 58.3% White, 36.8% Asian, 0.6% from two or more races, and 2.0% of the population were under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The population density was 4,152.7 inhabitants per square square mile (1,603.4/km²). There were 20,399 households, of which 30.7% had children under 18 living with them, 42.4% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 5.1%. The average age of residents was 18.6 and the median age of those living together was 26.2. The median family income was $44,462 and the. median per capita income of $37,434 for females was $20,622. About 2,7% of families and 4.5 per cent of the people were below the poverty line, including 4,5% of those under age 18 and 3.7%.
Education
Hazelwood and Ferguson-Florissant public school districts cover Florissant. North County Christian School is a pre-school to grade 12 Christian school that is theologically associated with the Church of the Nazarene. Lindenwood University has its offsite North County Campus located in the former Our Lady of Fatima School. Missouri School of Barbering and Hairstyling-St Louis is also located in Florissan. St. Louis Community College and University of MissouriSt. Louis are located in close proximity to the city. The city also has a theological college, an extension campus, and a barber college. The St Louis County Library operates the Florissants Valley Branch in Florisant. The Florissante High School is the only high school in the city belonging to the Hazelwood School District. There are several kindergarten through 8th-grade parochial schools in Florrisant. These include Atonement Lutheran School, Sacred Heart, St. Ferdinand, and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and Saint Norbert. There is also a public library in the town of Florrison, Missouri, which is part of the St Louis Public Library system. The town is home to the Missouri State Museum, which has a branch in the Florison section of the city, which also serves as a branch of the Missouri Museum of History and Art. The Missouri State University of Science and Technology has a campus in the suburb of St Louis, Missouri. The state university of Missouri has a satellite campus in St Louis City.
Health care
Florissant is home to Northwest HealthCare, an outpatient subsidiary of Christian Hospital. Services include: emergency department, sleep lab, bone density testing, mammography, ultrasound and MRI. A satellite facility of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center that is under construction on the campus is scheduled to open in late 2019.
