Pearl is a city in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States, located on the east side of the Pearl River across from the state capital Jackson. The population was 25,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is the 13th largest in the state and the largest city inRankin County. In 1970, Pearl had 9,613 white residents and 10 black residents. By 2010 blacks made up 23% of the city's population. Pearl's drinking water comes from the Sparta Sand Aquifer via nine wells that draw the water from it. In 2010, the city had 27,115 people, 10,463 households, and 6,662 families residing in the city. In 2000, there were 21,961 people, 6,025 families, and 1,005 people per square mile (388.4km²) The city has a total area of 22.0 square miles (57 km²), of which 21.8 square miles. (56 km²) is land and 0.2 sq miles (0.52 km 2) (1.00%) is water. The first mayor, Harris Harvey, was elected, along with council members Jimmy Joe Thompson, W.D. McAlpin, James Netherland, Ophelia Byrd, Mack C. Maddox, and Bobby Joe Davis. The Pearl Chamber of Commerce was formed on August 24, 1978. A 25,000 sq ft (2,300 m2) library opened near City Hall on July 18, 2005.

History

Pearl is the primary city name, but also Jackson are acceptable city names or spellings, Jax, Jksn, Jxn on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is City of Pearl. Pearl is a city in Mississippi. It is located on the Pearl River. In 1970, Pearl had 9,613 white residents and 10 black residents. By 2010 blacks made up 23% of the city's population. The city has been affected by the violence of the Ku Klux Klan, and was white-only for most of the 20th Century. In 1997, Luke Woodham went on a shooting spree that ended at Pearl High School, killing two and injuring seven, after earlier stabbing his mother to death. The first franchise by the City of Pearl for cable television installation was granted on July 6, 1976. The Pearl Chamber of Commerce was formed on August 24, 1978. A 25,000 sq ft (2,300 m2) library opened near City Hall on July 18, 2005. A large auditorium-style Community Center was built next door. Its clock tower is inscribed with the names of graduates of Pearl High school for the period 1949 through 1989 while the high school occupied the building. In 2010, the city had a population of 9,638. The population of Pearl was 9,788 in 2010, and it had a black population of 23%. The city is home to the Jackson-Evers International Airport, the state capital of Mississippi, and the University of Mississippi's Jackson campus. It has been home to a number of colleges and universities, including Mississippi State, Mississippi Tech, Mississippi State University, Mississippi Gulf Coast University, and Mississippi State College. It also hosts the Mississippi Museum of History and Art.

Geography

According to its 2008 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, Pearl's drinking water comes from the Sparta Sand Aquifer via nine wells that draw the water from it. Neighboring towns include Flowood, Brandon, Richland and the state capital Jackson. The city has a total area of 22.0 square miles (57 km²), of which 21.8 squaremile (56 km²) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.52km²) (1.00%) is water. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Pearl has a population of 2,788. The population of Jackson, Mississippi, has been at 2,856 since the city was founded in 1858. Pearl is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is one of the few cities in the state to have a lake as its main source of drinking water. The water supply is also used to irrigate the city's farmland. Pearl's water supply comes from nine wells, which are connected by a series of underground pipes. The town has a water supply system that was established in the early 20th century. It was the first city in Mississippi to be built on a lake, and is the only one to do so to date. It also has a lakebed that is used to store water for drinking and irrigation. It has been the source of much of the water in the city since the early 1900s, when it was first developed.

In the most recent census (2010), the racial demographics have changed similar to many other Jackson, MS area suburbs. About 9.2% of families and 12.2%. of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.3% of those under age 18 and 11.4%. of those age 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.05. The city has a population of 21,961 people, with 9,128 housing units at an average density of 418.1 per square mile (161.4/km²). The median age was 34 years, with every 100 females having a median age of 90.8 males. The per capita income for the city is $17,136. Sports

The Mississippi Braves are a Class AA minor league baseball affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The M-Braves play in the Southern League. The team moved from Greenville, South Carolina to Pearl before the 2005 season. They had their first game in the brand new Trustmark Park on April 18, 2005, losing to the Montgomery Biscuits. They play their home games at the Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. They are currently in their third season in the Southern League. The franchise is owned by Atlanta Braves owner Robert A. Cevallos, who also owns the Tampa Bay Rays and the St. Louis Cardinals. The club is currently in its fifth season in the Southern League. It is in its third year in the South League, having moved from Greenville South Carolina to Pearl before the 2005 season. It has a history of winning the Southern League title in 2004 and 2005. It also won the South Carolina League title in 2003 and 2004. It was the first team in the league to play in a state with more than one major league team. It played its first home game in Pearl on April 18, 2005, losing to the Montgomery Biscuits in their first game in the new park on that date. It also played its first home game in Pearl on April 19, 2006. It won the Southern League Championship in 2007.

Parks and recreation

Pearl is home to many parks and recreational facilities. The city is also the site of several U.S. Specialty Sports Association Regional and National Tournaments. The town is also home to an 18-hole public golf course with a Club House and short order restaurant. It is located in the central part of the town of about 4,000 people. The community has a history of being involved in sports, particularly baseball and softball. The City of Pearl is led by an elected Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Five of the six aldermen represent single-member districts; the sixth is elected at-large. The Mississippi Department of Corrections Central Mississippi Correctional Facility is in an unincorporated area in Rankin County, near Pearl. In 2007 the Mississippi Highway Patrol opened a driver's license facility across the highway from the prison. The state's Department of Environmental Quality operates the Central Regional Office and the MDEQ Laboratory in uninc incorporated Rankin county, nearPearl. The State of Mississippi is the largest state in the state, with a population of more than 1.2 million. The population of the state was 1.3 million in 2000. It is expected to reach 1.4 million by the end of the year, with more than half of that population living in Pearl and the other half in the surrounding counties. The Midsouth Private School Association serves Pre-kindergarten through 12. The Pearl High School District's Board of Aldermen is appointed by the City ofPearl board of aldermen. The city is home to one of the nation's largest public high schools, Pearl High, and one of its largest private schools, Park Place Christian Academy (PPCA) PPCA graduates its first senior class in May 2012. It is located in Pearl's central business district, near the city's downtown area. The school district also has a high school, the Pearl Junior High School, and a junior high. The high school is located near the center of the city, and the junior high is in the north. The public school district's high school students attend Pearl High. It also has two elementary schools, the Northside Elementary School and the Pearl Lower Elementary School. It has a private school, Faith Academy, serving Pre-K through 8-year-olds. It was founded in 2007. The private school's senior class graduated its first class in April 2012. The district's primary and secondary schools are the Pearl Elementary and Northside High Schools. The elementary school district is the largest in the state. The junior high school district has a senior high school and a middle school. The primary school is the Pearl Middle School, which opened in 2008.

Infrastructure

Pearl is served by Jackson-Evers International Airport, located at Allen C. Thompson Field in Rankin County. Law enforcement within the city limits of Pearl is handled by the Pearl Police Department. The City has no jail facilities and instead uses the Rank in County Jail, which is operated by theRankin County Sheriff's Department. Fire protection and prevention within the City limits is handledby the Pearl Fire Department, which operates four stations throughout the city. Pearl is located on Mississippi Highway 80, Mississippi Highway 25, and Mississippi Highway 475. The city is located in the Mississippi River valley, which runs through the center of the town.
