Biloxi (bih-LUK-see; French: [bilusi]) is a city in and one of two county seats of Harrison County, Mississippi, United States. The 2010 United States Census recorded the population as 44,054 and in 2019 the estimated population was 46,212. The beachfront of Biloxi lies directly on the Mississippi Sound, with barrier islands scattered off the coast and into the Gulf of Mexico. The area's first European settlers were French colonists. In the antebellum period of the 19th century, it became known as a summer resort, because of its proximity to the breezes and beaches of the coast. Keesler Air Force Base lies within the city and is home to the 81st Training Wing and the 403d Wing of the U.S. Air Force Reserve. It is one of the two surviving lighthouses on Mississippi Gulf Coast, which at one time had 12. Ship Island captured by Union forces in the early stages of the Civil War, enabling them to take control of the area. In 1881, the first railroad was built in the town, leading to the development of the city's seafood industry. The city is part of the GulfportBil Oxi metropolitan area and the Gulf portBilOxiPascagoula, MS Combined Statistical Area. It was once the third-largest city in Mississippi, behind Jackson and Gulfport. Due to the widespread destruction and flooding, many refugees left the city. Post-Katrina, the population of Bil Oxi decreased, and it became the fifth- largest city in the state.
History
Biloxi is the primary city name, but also Keesler AFB are acceptable city names or spellings, Boloxi, Keesler Air Force Base, Keesler Field on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. In 1699 French colonists formed the first, permanent, European settlement in French Louisiana, at Fort Maurepas, now in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The name of Biloxi in French was Bilocci, a transliteration of the term for the local Native American tribe in their language. In modern times it is called La Louisiane française to distinguish it from the modern state of Louisiana. In the antebellum period of the 19th century, it became known as a summer resort, because of its proximity to the breezes and beaches of the coast. The first Jewish synagogue had been built in the town in the 1940s. Open gambling ended during the 1950s, and Bil Roxi was the site of the first public assault on racial barriers in its 15-year civil rights struggle. In 1959, Bil Oxi went swimming as a local physician, a physician, and a swimming pool at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Resort. The city is known as the "Poor Man's Riviera", and was frequented by Southern families interested in fishing expeditions in the summer. It is also known as "Mississippi's Gulf Coast" because it is known for its oyster boats and oyster luggers, which are popular with Southern families. The town is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. The City of D'Iberville is the largest city in Harrison County, with a population of 4,832. The largest city by area is Gulfport, with an population of 6,715. The most populous city by population is Biloxo, which has a population 8,716. The biggest city by land is Gulf City, with 8,814 people. The number of people per square mile (1,711.2 km²) is the highest in the state.
Demographics
Biloxi is the smaller of two principal cities of the Gulfport-Bil Oxi, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is included in the Gulport-biloxI-Pascagoula Combined Statistical Area, which includes Biloxi, Gulfport, and Gulfport. As of the 2020 U.S. census, there were 49,449 people, 17,923 households, and 10,922 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 71.43% White, 19.04% African American, 0.49% Native American, 5.11% Asian, 0,11% Pacific Islander, and 2.38% from two or more races. In the city, the population dispersal was 24.2% under the age of 18, 14.3% from 18 to 24, 30.3%. from 25 to 44, 19.2%. from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median income for a household in theCity was $34,106, and the median income. for a family was $40,685. 14.6% of the population and 11. 2% of families lived below the poverty line. In 2005, as a result of Hurricane Katrina, many Vietnamese Americans left BiloxI. In 2009 members of the Vietnamese community in Bilox i said that Vietnamese were coming back to Biloxo due to a poor economic scenario in other parts of the United States.
Economy
Biloxi is home to eight casino resort hotels, with 24-hour gambling, concert entertainment shows, and several restaurants. Some of the current casino resorts include (dates reflect business status after Hurricane Katrina): Beau Rivage Resort & Casino (Reopened August 29, 2006, on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina). Golden Nugget Biloxi (Opened June 2007), Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Palace Casino Resort, Boomtown Casino.Treasure Bay Casino & Spa (Re opened 2006), Harrah's Gulf Coast Casino (reopened December 22, 2005), Gulf Coast Hotel & Resort (re-opened June 2007) The city's economy is based on gambling, especially at the casinos. It is also home to a number of theme parks, casinos, and other entertainment venues, such as the Mississippi River Riverboat casinos, which opened in the 1990s. The city has a population of 1.2 million, with the majority of residents living in or near the casinos, according to the city's 2010 census. It also has a large percentage of non-casino residents, who make up about one-third of the population of the city. It has a high percentage of African-American residents, and a low percentage of white residents, with about half of all residents living outside the city limits. The majority of its residents live in or around the BiloxI area, which is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The town has a low unemployment rate, and its economy is largely based on the casino industry.
Arts and culture
Biloxi is the setting of several John Grisham novels, including The Runaway Jury, The Partner, and The Boys from Biloxi. The song "Louisiana", by The Loved Ones, is about the rebuilding of the hurricane ravaged areas on the Gulf Coast. A substantial portion of Larry Brown's novel Fay is set in the city. The Miss Teen USA Pageant was held there from 1990 to 1994. Joan Didion mentions the city and the Edgewater Plaza mall in her collection of essays, The White Album. 2010 saw the grand opening of the new Frank Gehry designed Ohr-O'Keefe Museum Of Art. The city is also the setting for Neil Simon's play and film BilOXi Blues, which starred Mathew Broderick, and the story of army recruits during World War II training at Keesler Field, the present-day Air Force Base. It is also home to the Mississippi River Museum of Art, which was built in the 1960s and 1970s. The Mississippi River is a major tourist attraction, attracting visitors from all over the U.S. and around the world. It was the site of the World Series of Poker in the 1970s and 1980s, and was the home of the Miss Universe Pageant in the 1980s and 1990s. It also hosted the Miss America Pageant from 1989 to 1994, and is home to a number of museums and galleries. The town is located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which is known as the "Gulf Coast".
Sports
Biloxi is home to the Milwaukee Brewers' Class AA Southern League affiliate, the Biloxi Shuckers. The city is also the host city for the Women's World Military Cup. The Bolton State Office Building in Biloxi, Mississippi is home to the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the South Regional Office of the Mississippi Dept. of Environmental Quality. Fire department
The Biloxi Fire Department will have 10 Stations in both 2018 and 2019. Station 7 will be on the property of the dispatch center and the maintenance facilities, right by the road. Station 10 is being built on Old Highway 67 and will look similar to Stations 2 and 9. As of right now, Station 7 is operated by 4 firefighters in a trailer in Woolmarket. It will be a 3-bay Fire Station in the design of a beach house. The new stations will be built on the same site as the original fire station in the early 1900s. They will be located on the west side of the city and the east side on the north side. They are expected to be completed by the end of the year or early 2019. The cost of the new stations is estimated to be $1.5 million to $2 million. The fire department has a budget of $16 million for 2018 and $18 million for 2019.
Education
Biloxi is served by the Biloxi Public School District and the Harrison County School District. The Gulf Coast has a large Catholic school system, 15 of which are in BiloxI. The city is home to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Museum, which was founded in 1875. The museum is located in the historic town of Biloxis. The Mississippi Gulf coast Museum was founded by the Mississippi Coast Museum in 1876. The Museum is located on the Gulf Coast, and was established in 1879. It is one of the oldest museums in the state, along with St. Augustine and Gulf Shores. It was opened in 1881 by the Louisiana State Legislature. It has a museum collection of more than 2,000 items, including a collection of the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf Coast Museum was established by the state legislature in 1878. The first museum building was built in 1883. It dates back to the 17th century and is located at the base of a bluff in the town's downtown area.
