Calhoun City is located in south-central Calhoun County., and is bordered on the east by the town of Derma. Mississippi Highway 9 runs through the center of the town, leading north 6 miles (10 km) to Pittsboro, the county seat, and 10 miles (16 km) north to Bruce. The town has a total area of 2.37 square miles (6.15 km²), of which 2.36 square miles of it is land and 0.02 square mile (0.04 km²) is water. Calhoun City High School's athletic teams are known as the Wildcats. In 1968, Calhoun Academy was formed as a segregation academy by white parents seeking to avoid sending their children to racially integrated public schools. The Yalobusha River, a tributary of the Yazoo River, passes a mile south of the center of town. Mississippi Highway 9 leads north 6 miles (10 km) to Pittsboro, the county seat, and 10 miles (16 km) north to Bruce. The two highways head south from the town together, Highway 9 leading 9 miles (14 km) south to Slate Springs and Highway 8 leading 31 miles (50km) south then west to Grenada. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.37 square miles (6.15 km²), of which 2.36 square miles(6.11 km²) is land and 0.02 square miles ("0.04 km²"), or 0.69%, is water. It is located on Mississippi Highway 8, which leads east 8 miles (13km) to Vardaman and 18 miles (29 km) from the city to Houston. The town is home to the Calhoun City High School, which was founded in the early 1900s. The school was the first public high school in the state of Mississippi. It was built in the 1930s and is now the state's second largest high school, with a total enrollment of 1,856 students. The high school has a campus that opened in the 1950s.

The town is located on the shores of the Redwood River, which runs through the center of the city. It is the only town in the state that is not on the National Register of Historic Places. The city's name is derived from the word "redwood" which means "river" or "river". The town was founded in 1876. It was named after the Red River, a river that runs through it. The name is also used to refer to the town's first postmaster. The current mayor is the son of a former mayor of the same town, who was killed in a car accident in the early 1900s. The mayor is a former member of the state legislature and served as mayor from 1998 to 2002. He was elected to a second term in 2008.
