Natchez

Natchez is the county seat of and only city in Adams County, Mississippi, United States. The city was named for the Natchez tribe of Native Americans, who with their ancestors, inhabited much of the area from the 8th century AD through the French colonial period. It is some 90 miles (140 km) southwest of Jackson, the capital of Mississippi, which is located near the center of the state. It was by far the most prevalent slave trading city in Mississippi, and second in the United States only to New Orleans. In 1833, the most active slavers in the U.S. began a program of arbitrating low slave prices in the area by sending thousands of slaves to Deep South markets. In 1840, a tornado struck the city, devastating much of its retail store like items in a modern-day retail store that retail people like clothing, food, and other items in the modern day. It has a total population of 14,520 (as of the 2020 census), making it the 25th-largest city in the state, and the second-largest in Mississippi after Jackson. It predates Jackson by more than a century; the latter replaced NatChez as the capital in 1822, as it was more centrally located in the developing state. The town was the southern terminus of the historicNatchez Trace, with the northern terminus being Nashville, Tennessee. Today the modern NatcheZ Trace Parkway, which commemorates this route, still has its southern terminal in Natchex.

History

Natchez is the primary city name, but also Church Hill are acceptable city names or spellings. The official name is City of Natchez. Natchez is one of the oldest and most important European settlements in the lower Mississippi River Valley. After the French lost the French and Indian War (Seven Years' War), they ceded Natchez and near territory to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris of 1763. After defeat in the American Revolutionary War, Great Britain ceded the territory to the United States under the terms of the treaty of Paris (1783) The city served as the capital of the Mississippi Territory and then of the state of Mississippi. It predates Jackson by more than a century, as it was more centrally located in the developing state. In 1840, the city was struck by a devastating tornado that killed 317 people and injured 109. It ranks today as the second-deadliest tornado in U.S. history, although the death toll may be higher due to slave deaths not traditionally being counted in the South at the time. The city attracted wealthy planters as residents, who built mansions to fit their ambitions. Agriculture remained the primary economic base for the region until well into the twentieth century.During the early 20th century, much of the cargo was exported to Northern cities and down to New Orleans, where much of it was shipped to Europe. Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.9 square miles (36 km²) of which 13.2 square miles are land and 0.6 km² (4.62%) is water. It has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa) under the Köppen climate classification system. The city is located in the eastern part of the state, near the border with New Mexico. It is the only city in the state to have been named after a former president of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died in office in 1969. It also has a long history of civil rights activism, which dates back to the 19th century. It was the first city in New Mexico to vote for the Democratic Party in the presidential election in 1988. It won the election by a narrow margin of 1.2%. It is located on the eastern edge of New Mexico's Pima County, which is home to the majority of the city's residents. The town has a population of 1,856.5, with the majority living in and around the town of Laredo, the town's largest city. The area has a climate of Cfa, which means it has a hot and humid climate, with an average monthly temperature of °C (°F) of 4.4°C. Demographics

As of the 2020 U.S. Census, there were 14,520 people, 6,026 households, and 3,149 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 54.49% African American, 44.18% White, 0.38% Asian and 0.11% Native American. The city had a median income of $25,117, and the median income for a family was $29,723. 28.6% of the population and 25.1% of families were below the poverty line. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.00. In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females,there were 81.5 males. For each 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.7 males. The per capita income for the city is $16,868. The national average for the same time period is $20,829, and for females the average is $24,071. The U.N. estimates the city's population will rise to 14,000 by the end of the 20th century. It has a population density of 1,398.3 per square mile.

Economy

Adams County Correctional Center is a private prison operated by the Corrections Corporation of America on behalf of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It is in an unincorporated area in Adams County, near Natchez, Mississippi. The prison holds about 1,000 inmates. It was built in the 1970s and 1980s. It has a maximum-security prison wing and a medium-security wing. It opened in 1994. It's the only private prison in Adams county. It houses about 1.5 million inmates. The maximum- security wing houses about 2,000 prisoners. It also houses a minimum-security cell block, which houses about 100 inmates. In the summer, the prison holds up to 1,500 inmates. it is the only prison in the state that is not open to the general public. The state's prison system is run by the federal government. It operates on a federal contract with the Corrections Corp of America, which is owned by Corrections Corporation. of America. The federal prison system has a budget of more than $1.2 billion a year. It holds around 1,100 inmates. Its main prison wing is located in the uninc incorporated area of Adams County. It opens in the summer of 1994. The facility's main prison yard is in the town of Natchezi, Mississippi, near the city of Adams. The county's prison population is about 2.2 million people. The average prison sentence for a federal inmate is about six years. It can hold up to 12,000 people.

Education

Natchez is home to Alcorn State University's Natchez Campus, which offers the School of Nursing. The School of Business offers Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree and other business classes. Copiah-Lincoln Community College also operates a campus in the city. The city and Adams County operate one public school system, theNatchez-Adams School District. There are also a number of private and parochial schools in the area, including Holy Family Catholic School, Cathedral School, Adams County Christian School, and Susie B. West Elementary School, among others. The school system is part of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) The school district is made up of ten schools: Susie West Elementary, Morgantown, Gilmer McLaurin, Joseph F. Frazier, Robert Lewis Magnet School, NatcheZ Freshman Academy, NatChez Early College@Co-Lin, Central Alternative School, natchez High School and Fallin Career and Technology Center. The district comprises ten schools. The city is also home to two private schools: Holy FamilyCatholic School, founded in 1890, and Holy Family Christian School (ACCS), which is a PK-12 school affiliated with the Roman Catholic St. Mary Basilica. Adams CountyChristian School was founded as a segregation academy and is a member of the Mississippi Association of independent Schools. It is affiliated with Holy family Catholic Church. Holy Family is also a private PK-3 school.

Infrastructure

Natchez is served by the Natchez-Adams County Airport, a general aviation facility. The nearest airports with commercial service are Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, 85 miles (137 km) to the south via US 61, and Alexandria International Airport, 82 miles (132 km) west via US 84 to LA-28W. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which runs through the center of the city. It is also on the Louisiana-Mississippi state line, and is connected by U.S. Highways 61 and 98, as well as Mississippi Highway 555 and 554. It also has a rail link with the Canadian National Railway, which interchanges with Canadian National in the city's downtown area. The town is located near the town of Ferriday, Mississippi, which is on the other side of the Mississippi. It has a population of around 2,000. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in World War I. The Battle was followed by the First World War, which ended in the First Gulf War, and the Second World War. The Mississippi River is a major waterway in the area. It runs north-south, parallel to the Mississippi, connecting it with Port Gibson, Woodville, Mississippi and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The river also runs east-west, linking it with Vidalia, Louisiana and Brookhaven, Mississippi. In the north, it connects to Waterproof north to St. Joseph, Newellton, and Tallulah, Louisiana, and Bude and McComb.

Various movies have been shot here, including The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974), Crossroads (1986), Raintree County (1957), Horse Soldiers (1959), Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn (1981), The Ladykillers (2004), Get On Up (2014) and Ma (film) (2019) The city is also the setting for the film Ma, which is due to be released in 2019. The city's history dates back to the early 1600s, when it was first settled by English settlers. It was also the site of the Battle of the Bulge, which took place in 17th century England. The town is now home to a variety of historic buildings, including the U.S. Capitol and the White House, as well as a number of other historic buildings. It is also known as the birthplace of many famous people, including Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Thomas the Tank Engine. The name of the town is still used as a tourist attraction, especially in the city's tourist attractions, such as the Old Town area and the surrounding countryside. The main street of the city is named after the town of the same name, which was once home to the town's first inhabitants, the Wabash Indians. It has also been used as the location for several other major events, including World War II and the opening of New York City's first railway station, and for the filming of The Wizard of Oz and The Bible.
