Maple Plain is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,768 at the 2010 census. Settlement of the area began in 1854 and revolved around Lake Independence to its north, and its outflow Pioneer Creek. In 1868 and 1869, the St. Paul, Pacific and Manitoba Railroad was built through Maple Plain. The city was incorporated as a village in 1912. Village water came to the town in 1939, sewer circa 1950, and blacktop in 1961. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 1.12 square miles (2.90 km²), of which 1.11 square miles of it is land and 0.01 square mile (0.03 km²) is water. Maple Plain is 20 miles west of Minneapolis on U.S. Highway 12 and is boarded by Independence to the west. In the city, the median income for a household in the city was $50,000, and the median for a family was $60,000. The racial makeup of the city is 94.2% White, 2.0% African American, 0.3% Native American,0.6% Asian, 1.1% Pacific Islander, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.8% of the population. The median age in Maple Plain was 43.1 years, with the gender makeup of 50.0 per cent female and 50.1 per cent male.

History

Maple Plain is the primary city name, but also Independence, Minnetrista, Orono are acceptable city names or spellings, Medina on the other hand no longer accepted or obsolete and are no longer used as a designation. The official name is Maple Plain. Settlement of the area began in 1854 and revolved around Lake Independence to its north. In 1868 and 1869, the St. Paul, Pacific and Manitoba Railroad was built through Maple Plain. By 1871, Maple Plain had a post office. The city was incorporated as a village in 1912. Village water came to the town in 1939, sewer circa 1950, and blacktop in 1961.Maple Plain is named for the many sugar maples in its forests. It is located in the province of Manitoba and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The town has a population of about 2,000. It was named after the sugar maple, which is a common tree in the area. It also has a number of other native plants, such as pine, oak, and elm. It has a lake, Pioneer Creek, and several streams. The village is located on the Canadian Shield, which was created by the Canadian National Railway in 1869. The U.S. Geological Survey has mapped the area since 1854. The Canadian Shield is the largest of its kind in the United States, covering an area of more than 1,800 square miles (3,500 square kilometers) and is home to the Canadian Museum of Natural History and the Canada Museum of Nature and Science. The Canada Shield is one of the largest basins in the world, with more than 3,000 square kilometers (1,200 square miles) of land. The area is known as the "Sugar Maple Forest" because of its many sugar trees.

Geography

Maple Plain is located 20 miles west of Minneapolis on U.S. Highway 12. The city is boarded by Independence to the west. Pioneer Creek flows through Maple Plain's northwest corner. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 1.12 square miles (2.90 km²) of which 1.11 square miles is land and 0.01 square mile (0.03km²) is water. The population was 1,071 in 2010. The 2010 Census estimated the city's population to be 1,081. The U.N. World Heritage Site is located in Maple Plain, Minnesota. It is located on the banks of Pioneer Creek, a tributary of the Red River. The Red River flows through the northwest corner of the city, and the city is on the shores of Lake Minnetonka, a large lake. The town of Maple Plain is in Hennepin County, which borders the city of Minneapolis to the east and west. The community is also on Hennepsin County Road 19, 29, and 83, which are four of the community's main routes. It has a population of 1,091. It was the site of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, which took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Battle was followed by the Second World War, which ended in the early 20th century. The Minnesota State Highway System was built in the 1930s and 1940s.

Government

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass a bill that would ban the use of torture by members of Congress.
